The Avdiivka fortified area remained one of the main problems for the Armed forces of Ukraine for a long time: since 2014, the enemy had been constructing defensive structures there, while also terrorizing Donetsk with artillery shelling.

When the Russian armed forces surrounded Avdiivka, seized strategic heights, and began tightening the noose, the AFU retreated, leaving even the fortress of the Avdiivka coke and chemical plant without any fight.

In order to delay the further advance of Russian troops, reserves of the enemy were transferred to the Avdiivka direction. And new equipment that the AFU had previously tried to keep safe.
