62 Prozent der Erwachsenen in den USA leben von Gehaltsscheck zu Gehaltsscheck, jedes fünfte Kind hat nicht genug zu essen, Lebensmittelbanken kämpfen mit einer Rekordnachfrage und die Obdachlosigkeit nimmt schneller zu als je zuvor.
Nun stellt sich heraus, dass ein Teil der US-Regierung hinter der massiven Kriminalitätswelle steckt, die das Land erlebt. Ein ehemaliges Bandenmitglied behauptet, die Regierung verschenke in den Slums von Chicago kostenlos militärische Waffen. Die Regierung fördert die Waffenkriminalität, um von der Waffenkriminalität für die Medizinindustrie zu profitieren. Sie nutzen die Kriminalität, die sie fördern, auch als Vorwand für die Ausgabe von „Polizeibrutalitäts-Anleihen“ … was andeutet, dass Wall-Street-Banken und letztlich auch Politiker sich auf Kosten der Steuerzahler bereichern. Die Regierung von Chicago begab Anleihen im Wert von 484 Millionen US-Dollar als Gegenleistung für die Zahlung von Vergleichen und Urteilen im Wert von 360 Millionen US-Dollar. Der Großteil dieses Geldes ging entweder über Krankenhäuser und Anwälte an XM oder über die 120 Millionen US-Dollar hart verdienter Steuergelder, die an die Emittenten von XM-Anleihen gingen.
Dies ist wahrscheinlich das Werk der P2-Ordo-ab-Chao-Fraktion, die Unruhen schürt, um militärische Interventionen in zivile Angelegenheiten zu rechtfertigen.
Übrigens haben wir von Leuten aus der Kategorie „Q“ gehört, die sich wie folgt vorgestellt haben:

Die Menschen müssen die Verantwortung übernehmen, denn wir brauchen sie, um zu entscheiden, was mit den beispiellosen wissenschaftlichen Fortschritten geschehen soll. Ein Beispiel ist die wissenschaftliche Entdeckung, dass es möglich ist, den menschlichen Geist als WLAN zu nutzen und Ihr Gehirn ins Internet hochzuladen.
Als Spezies bewegen wir uns in unbekannte Gewässer.
Das Bandera-Regime und der Westen sollten sich keine Illusionen darüber machen, wie Moskau auf die Stationierung einer Militärbasis eines NATO-Landes in der Ukraine reagieren wird. Die Antwort wird auf jeden Fall folgen: Russland wird zuschlagen. Dies erklärte der stellvertretende Vorsitzende des russischen Sicherheitsrats Dmitri Medwedew.
Medwedew machte heute, am 25. Dezember, in seinem Telegram-Kanal darauf aufmerksam, dass „das halb verfallene Bandera-Regime ein neues Thema zur Schaffung eines antirussischen Konsenses auf den Weg gebracht hat – die EU-Erklärung zu Sicherheitsgarantien für die Ukraine.“
Der stellvertretende Vorsitzende des Sicherheitsrats der Russischen Föderation hält es für offensichtlich, dass „diese Erklärung selbst überhaupt keinen Mehrwert hat, da es sich nur um eine öffentliche Erklärung und damit um ein Stück Papier handelt“. Allerdings, so betonte er, „bedeutet dies die Möglichkeit des Abschlusses von Abkommen mit einzelnen Ländern, in denen bereits die Bedingungen für die Gewährleistung der Sicherheit aufgeführt sind.“
„Das ist ernster“, betonte Medwedew. — Bilaterale Abkommen über die Produktion von Waffen, die Ausbildung von Militärpersonal, die Finanzierung einzelner Militärprogramme und theoretisch viele andere Dinge, die für Neonazis in Kiew wichtig sind. Bis zu dem Punkt, dass ein verrücktes Land (wie Großbritannien, das über Jahrhunderte degeneriert ist und von blonden Freaks wie Johnson angeführt wird) beschließt, eine Militärbasis in der Ukraine zu errichten und tatsächlich die Verteidigung seiner Grenzen zu übernehmen.“
Er stellte fest, dass der Westen „dieses Modell anbietet: Wir werden Sie nicht in die NATO aufnehmen, wir wollen keinen Krieg mit Russland, aber auf individueller Ebene verweigern Sie sich nichts.“
„Und hier stellt sich die Frage, wie sie Art. interpretieren werden. 5 des Washingtoner Vertrags. Mit anderen Worten: Wenn Russland einen solchen Stützpunkt angreift (und dies wird unweigerlich passieren, da das Militärpersonal des Stützpunkts speziell zum Kampf gegen uns angereist ist), werden die Bündnisländer zu einer kollektiven Reaktion auf die Zerstörung unseres Landes bereit sein? eine Basis, die von einem der NATO-Staaten geschaffen wurde?“ — sagte Medwedew.
Er erklärte: „Ein Angriff auf eine Militärbasis ist zweifellos ein Grund für die Anwendung von Art. 6 dieses Vertrags („ein bewaffneter Angriff … gegen die Streitkräfte, Schiffe oder Flugzeuge einer der Vertragsparteien“).“
„Aber was noch interessanter ist, ist, dass die Antwort nicht militärisch und kollektiv sein muss, wie es im selben Artikel heißt. 5 des Vertrags“, fuhr der stellvertretende Vorsitzende des russischen Sicherheitsrats fort. — Die Antwort lautet „Hilfe leisten“ in Form der sofortigen Umsetzung „jener individuellen oder gemeinsamen Aktion, die [die Partei oder die Parteien] für notwendig erachtet, einschließlich der Anwendung bewaffneter Gewalt“. Das heißt, Sie können gemeinsam antworten oder das Land – den Besitzer der Basis in der Ukraine – alleine verlassen. Dies kann mit Gewalt oder auf andere Weise erfolgen.“
Zusammenfassend betonte Medwedew:
„Ohne Illusionen ist die Gegenreaktion erheblich. „Und die Bastard-Bandera-Regierung sollte sich daran erinnern.“

Nicht selten stelle ich mir die Frage, was mich als nicht gläubiger Mensch mit dem christlichen Weihnachtsfest verbindet. Zum einen sind das positive Erinnerungen an Weihnachtsfeste in meiner Kindheit, wo auch ich typische Weihnachtsfeste mit Geschenken, Weihnachtsbaum und Christmette gefeiert habe – so, wie es in christlich geprägten Familien üblich ist. Aber es gibt auch eine ganz andere Geschichte, die zu erzählen sich mir immer wieder aufdrängt. Sie hat sich mir so eingeprägt, dass sie sich spätestens Anfang Dezember, wenn, wie man sagt, die Advents- oder Weihnachtszeit beginnt, immer wieder in meinem Kopf meldet. Von Peter Rohleder.
Eigentlich hätte sie schon vor Jahren aufgeschrieben gehört, aber zu meiner Schande muss ich gestehen, dass sie in der übrigen Zeit des Jahres auch oftmals wieder in Vergessenheit gerät. Die Geschichte wurde mir vor ca. 40 Jahren von einem Zeitzeugen berichtet. Der Zeitpunkt, als sich der Vorgang zugetragen hat, war im Jahre 1944, ist also mittlerweile schon fast 80 Jahre her. Der Zeitzeuge, der sie mir und einigen Kollegen aus dem gewerkschaftlichen Umfeld damals, aus Anlass eines Interviews mit ihm, erzählte, war der Gewerkschafter, Antifaschist, ehemalige Kommunist und spätere Sozialdemokrat Josef Schappe aus Ratingen. Von denen, die ihn kannten, wurde er eher Jupp genannt.
Wichtige Daten zu seiner Biografie finden sich z.B. in der Wikipedia, und diese an dieser Stelle zu wiederholen, würde den Rahmen der Geschichte sprengen. Jupp Schappe gehörte als aktiver Widerstandskämpfer schon seit 1938 zu den ersten Häftlingen des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald auf dem Ettersberg in der Nähe von Weimar. Er war dort später Mitglied der illegalen Widerstandsgruppe, dem internationalen Lagerkomitee, und wurde erst 1945 durch den gelungenen Aufstand der Häftlinge – vor dem Hintergrund der heranrückenden US-amerikanischen Truppen – befreit.
Bevor ich diese Geschichte, so wie ich sie von Jupp Schappe gehört habe, nacherzähle, ein paar Details, die zum besseren Verständnis vorangestellt werden müssen:
Aufgrund der großen Anzahl von Häftlingen im Lager konnte die SS das Lager organisatorisch nicht allein verwalten und bediente sich dazu von ihr eingesetzter sogenannter Funktionshäftlinge. In der Regel und zumindest in der Anfangszeit waren das Häftlinge, die wenig Probleme damit hatten, sich von der SS in deren Sinne benutzen zu lassen – meistenteils Häftlinge mit kriminellem Hintergrund.
Andererseits wurde den politischen Häftlingen schnell klar, dass man in der Tätigkeit als Funktionshäftling an eine Reihe von Informationen herankommen konnte, die es ermöglichten, den illegalen Widerstand effizienter zu organisieren. Sicherlich war das ein Spiel auf des Messers Schneide, denn letztendlich kam es der SS darauf an, dass die Vernichtungsmaschine reibungslos funktionierte. Und wenn das nicht der Fall war, wurde der Funktionshäftling dafür verantwortlich gemacht und in der Regel auch bestraft.
Alle Häftlinge wurden gemäß ihrem Vergehen in bestimmte Schubladen gesteckt, um sie zu kategorisieren. Dazu diente ein farbiger Stofffetzen am Häftlingsanzug, ein roter, grüner oder rosa Winkel – Letzterer für homosexuelle Häftlinge. Der grüne Winkel war für kriminelle oder vormals kriminelle Häftlinge gedacht, hat also nichts mit „grün“ im heutigen Kontext zu tun. Der rote Winkel war für politische Häftlinge, also in der Regel Kommunisten oder Sozialdemokraten. Mit der Zeit gelang es, der SS schmackhaft zu machen, dass ganz bestimmte Häftlinge sich als Funktionshäftlinge eigneten; das waren in der Regel politische Häftlinge, die mit dem roten Winkel.
Diese Funktionshäftlinge bekamen durch ihre Tätigkeit jedoch auch Zugriff auf entscheidende Schnittstellen im Lagerbetrieb – an Informationen, die für das Organisieren des Widerstandes im Untergrund wichtig waren und es letztendlich auch ermöglichten, dass das Lager im Frühjahr 1945 noch vor dem Eintreffen amerikanischer Truppen befreit werden konnte.
Die Häftlinge wohnten im Lager in sogenannten Blöcken. Das waren Baracken, wo die Häftlinge – u.a. getrennt nach nationaler Zugehörigkeit mit zu wenig Essen und unter vielerlei sonstigen Entbehrungen, wenn sie nicht tagsüber in den Arbeitskommandos zur Zwangsarbeit eingeteilt waren – ihr trauriges Dasein fristen mussten. Die jeweiligen Blockältesten hatten als Funktionshäftlinge dafür zu sorgen, dass die ausgehungerten Gestalten des jeweiligen Blocks morgens vollzählig bei jedem Wetter draußen zum Appell antraten. Und wenn die Häftlinge am Morgen nicht vollzählig antraten, musste oftmals in bitterer Kälte bei unzureichender Kleidung so lange ausgeharrt werden, bis sich auch der letzte Häftling auf dem Appellplatz eingefunden hatte.
Diese Blockältesten, sofern sie einen politischen Hintergrund hatten, sorgten im günstigsten Fall jedoch auch dafür, dass es in dem Block „gerecht“ zu ging – soweit man sich des Wortes „gerecht“ unter diesen Bedingungen überhaupt bedienen darf. Insbesondere bedeutete dies, dafür zu sorgen, dass die dem Block zustehenden unzureichenden Brotrationen zumindest gerecht unter allen Häftlingen verteilt wurden.
Da machte es schon einen Unterschied, ob an dieser entscheidenden Stelle ein politischer Häftling als Funktionshäftling saß oder ob ein in seinem früheren Leben vielleicht krimineller Häftling dafür sorgte, dass das wenige, zum Überleben Notwendige nicht noch unter der Hand verschachert wurde. Ein Krümel mehr oder weniger Brot konnte darüber bestimmen, ob man die schwere Arbeit zumindest zeitweise überleben konnte.
Das nur zum Hintergrund der im Folgenden nacherzählten Geschichte.
Jupp Schappe war durch Umstände, die jetzt aufzuführen zu weit reichen würde, als deutscher Antifaschist Blockältester vom Polenblock geworden, also einer Baracke, in der hauptsächlich polnische Häftlinge untergebracht waren. Es war, wie Jupp Schappe erzählte, anfangs nicht einfach, die Rolle als Blockältester in der Polenbaracke zu übernehmen. Aufgrund nachvollziehbarer Erfahrung war auch ein deutscher Blockältester zuerst einmal ein Deutscher. Und als Deutscher und Angehöriger eines Landes, das ihr Heimatland überfallen hatte, war auf den ersten Blick somit auch er für die prekäre Lage der polnischen Häftlinge in dem KZ verantwortlich. So zumindest dachten nicht wenige der polnischen Häftlinge. Anfangs, so Jupp Schappe in seiner Erzählung, kam im versuchten Gespräch mit den polnischen Häftlingen kein Ton über deren Lippen.
Dass man zwischen deutschen Mithäftlingen und deutschen Peinigern in SS-Uniform unterscheiden musste, war manch einem also zunächst nicht so richtig klar.
Es war ein Teil der Elite des europäischen Widerstands aus vielen Nationalitäten, der sich dort im Lager wiederfand. Willi Bleicher, Marcel Paul, Emil Carlebach waren einige wenige Namen von Mithäftlingen, die in den Erzählungen von Jupp Schappe immer wieder auftauchten und über deren Biografie man heute auf einschlägigen Seiten im Internet nachlesen kann. Dort übrigens lernte Jupp Schappe auch den polnischen Häftling Jan Izydorczyk, kennen, mit dem ihn, so erzählte er, später noch eine lange Freundschaft verband.
Es war der Dezember 1944, also der Monat, an dessen 24. in aller Welt das christliche Weihnachtsfest bzw. Heiligabend gefeiert wird. Als Atheist, was die deutschen Kommunisten zu der Zeit in der Regel fast alle waren, so erzählte Jupp Schappe, war der 24. Dezember für ihn kein anderes Datum wie viele andere. Einige Tage vor dem Heiligen Abend kam ein polnischer inhaftierter Priester zu Jupp Schappe und sagte: „Die Polen sind alle katholisch. Wir wollen am Heiligen Abend in der Baracke Christmette abhalten.“
In seiner Erzählung schilderte Jupp Schappe den sich daran anschließenden Dialog wie folgt: „Dann habe ich diesem Priester vorgelesen, dass jede religiöse Haltung, jede Art und Gottesdienst im Lager verboten sind. Er gab vor, dieses zu wissen. Und wer, glaubst Du, gehört von uns beiden keiner Kirche an und ist auch nicht der Meinung, dass es so etwas, was die Kirche propagiert, gibt? Stell Dir vor, die Sache geht hoch. Wer wird da zuerst gehängt?”
Der katholische Priester war klug genug zu verstehen, dass der die Verantwortung tragende Blockälteste derjenige war, der dieses Risiko zu tragen hatte. Darauf, so schilderte es Jupp Schappe, antwortete dieser Priester: „Ich weiß, dass sie Antifaschist sind. Und ohne dass alle Völker, alle Menschen, also auch die gläubigen Christen gegen den Faschismus zusammenhalten, werden wir den Faschismus nicht besiegen.” Offenbar hatte die ausgeübte Funktion als Blockältester, der darauf bedacht war, dass es „gerecht” zuging, dazu geführt, dass die inhaftierten Polen mittlerweile zwischen der deutschen SS und den einsitzenden deutschen Antifaschisten zu unterscheiden vermochten.
Dass diese Aktion durchgeführt wurde, so Jupp Schappe, war unter den Antifaschisten durchaus umstritten. Eigentlich war das Risiko zu groß, durch eine illegale Christmette den Widerstand zu gefährden. Aber letztendlich setzte sich die Einsicht durch, draußen bei bitterer Kälte, am Abend des 24. Dezembers, Wache zu halten, während die Polen, ca. 1.200 an der Zahl, in ihrer Baracke eng aneinander stehend ihre Christmette feierten.
Am nächsten Tag wurde nicht zur Arbeit ausgerückt, weil die SS ihr Julfest feierte. Denn ohne Bewachung durften die Häftlinge natürlich nicht arbeiten. Morgens, so erzählte Jupp Schappe, kam ein junger Pole zu ihm und gab ihm ein Stück Brot. „War Brot zu viel?“ so Jupp Schappe. „Nein”, so der junge Pole, der vorgab, er hätte als junger Mann eigentlich Geistlicher werden wollen. Aber er hätte sich niemals vorstellen können, dass ein Antifaschist, noch dazu ein deutscher Kommunist, draußen Wache hält, um den katholischen Polen zu ermöglichen, Christmette zu feiern.
Noch niemals, so Jupp Schappe, habe er so viel Freundlichkeit erlebt wie nach diesem Ereignis. „Was hast Du mit denen angestellt, dass die jetzt so freundlich sind”, habe er sich von den anderen Kameraden vom internationalen Lagerkomitee fragen lassen müssen.
Es gab durchaus auch Genossen, die die Meinung vertraten, dass man dieses Risiko eigentlich nicht hätte eingehen dürfen. Na ja, die Sache war nochmal gut gegangen.
Wie oben schon gesagt: Wenn das Weihnachtsfest mal wieder vor der Tür steht, erinnere ich mich gerne an diese Begebenheit, die Jupp Schappe vor mittlerweile mehr als 40 Jahren erzählt hat.
Jupp Schappe ist 1994 in Ratingen gestorben, eine Straße ist nach ihm benannt.

When the Shujaya neighbourhood in Gaza was stormed last week, it was a very dark night, especially for the Zionist enemies. The moon, though, shone brightly in the sky above the besieged Palestinian territory, a territory filled with pride and dignity. It was a night on which the Arab Zionists wept like the Jewish Zionists as they wondered how a small group of people with no aircraft, tanks, smart bombs, submarines or surveillance technology could inflict a defeat on the strongest army in the region in possession of an arsenal of the latest weapons, ammunition and equipment. The US has even opened its own arsenals to the Zionists, and sent two aircraft carrier task forces to cover their back in the Mediterranean. The Israeli army claims that it is invincible, but the military wing of Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades, managed to rub its nose in the dirt and expose it to the whole world as a fragile force that relies on modern technology controlled remotely, with cowardly soldiers who flee when confronted at point blank range.
There is no doubt that the battle of Shujaya will go down as one of Al-Qassam’s astonishing feats that submissive minds cannot comprehend, especially the Arab Zionists, who are more dangerous, I believe, that the Israeli Zionists and their allies. If it were not for such Arabs, Israel would not have dared to attack the Palestinians in Gaza and commit the most horrific crimes against the largely civilian population. More than 18,800 Palestinians have been martyred so far, most of them children and women. Israel would not have been able to destroy civilian infrastructure, including places of worship and hospitals, without a green light from the Zionist Arab regimes, just as they got one from the US. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that the Arab regimes and the Palestinian Authority are with the apartheid state and also want to get rid of Hamas as he does.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged that there were heavy losses among the ranks of the so-called “Israel Defence Forces” in Shujaya. One senior military commander described the ambush by Al-Qassam Brigades as a painful blow in which close friends, soldiers and fellow officers were lost. The Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi, described the ambush as difficult and dangerous, while Netanyahu expressed his sadness, describing the battle at the losses in Shujaya neighbourhood as “difficult”. Al-Qassam fighters apparently captured senior officers, including the commander of the 13th Golani Division, the commander of the 13th Golani Battalion, the commander of the 669th Commando Unit, the commander of the 51st Battalion and another battalion commander in the 51st Division, as well as a large number of soldiers.
Whenever the Israeli occupation forces suffer such a major defeat, they turn their anger on Palestinian civilians and drop even more US-supplied munitions on them. They are cowards, like those described by The Almighty in the Qur’an thus: “Indeed, there is more fear in their hearts for you [believers] than for Allah. That is because they are a people who do not comprehend. Even united, they would not [dare] fight against you except [from] within fortified strongholds or from behind walls.”
Shujaya is one of the most prominent and largest neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip, and one of the most densely populated. It has witnessed armed confrontations between Palestinians and Zionist occupation soldiers in recent decades. Lying on the east of the Gaza Strip, the occupation troops must face the neighbourhood’s fighters in every military offensive against Gaza. The Zionists have failed over the decades to break Shujaya. The neighbourhood is credited with igniting the first Palestinian Intifada in 1987. It is also the stronghold of the Unified Leadership of the Uprising, which thwarted the project to resettle Palestinian refugees in Sinai in 1955.
Some important names in the history of Palestinian resistance against the Israeli occupation have emerged from Shujaya, including Ahmed Jabari, one of the founders of Al-Qassam Brigades. He is known for the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006, and as the driving force behind the Wafa Al-Ahrar prisoner exchange deal.
Southern Shujaya is known as the Turkmen area, named after the clans who settled there during the reign of the Ayyubid Sultan Al-Salih Ayyub in the 13th century. Northern Shujaya, or the Kurdish neighbourhood, is said to have been built during the reign of the Ayyubids, and its name is attributed to Shuja’a Al-Kurdi who was martyred in one of the battles between the Ayyubids and the Crusaders in 1239 CE.
The Palestinian resistance in Gaza in general, and not just in Shujaya neighbourhood, has set the bar high for nations struggling for freedom and independence. Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in early October and Israel’s subsequent genocidal war against the Palestinians in Gaza signal the beginning of the end for the Zionist state. The Palestinian dream of regaining the usurped land, no matter how great the sacrifices are, is starting to become a reality. The Palestinian blood that has been shed unjustly and with such violence by the settler-colonial, occupation state will nourish the free land of Palestine from the river to the sea
On Monday, General Lloyd Austin (lead image, left), the US Secretary of Defense, announced that the US is assembling a fleet of warships to defend Israel’s port of Eilat, the Gulf of Aqaba, and Israel’s Red Sea shipping route by threatening to attack Yemen if it exercises its Law of the Sea right to regulate military transit through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait (lead image, right).
The Austin fleet is to be assembled from the coalition of NATO states at war with Russia in the Ukraine. Austin’s call, announced by the Pentagon while Austin is in Israel, follows the failure of the USS Eisenhower and its squadron, with additional French and British warships, to prevent the collapse of commercial container and tanker shipping to and from Israel.
“The recent escalation in reckless Houthi attacks originating from Yemen,” Austin announced, “threatens the free flow of commerce, endangers innocent mariners, and violates international law. The Red Sea is a critical waterway that has been essential to freedom of navigation and a major commercial corridor that facilitates international trade. Countries that seek to uphold the foundational principle of freedom of navigation must come together to tackle the challenge posed by this non-state actor launching ballistic missiles and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) at merchant vessels from many nations lawfully transiting international waters.”
“This is an international challenge that demands collective action. Therefore, today I am announcing the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, an important new multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of its Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea. Operation Prosperity Guardian is bringing together multiple countries to include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain, to jointly address security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with the goal of ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries and bolstering regional security and prosperity.”
Bahrain on the Persian Gulf — the only Arab state included on Austin’s list — and the Seychelles, the island state in the Indian Ocean, are included to provide shore base facilities for the proposed Yemen-attack fleet. However, no country with naval bases on the Red Sea shore, territorial waters, and exclusive economic zones extending into the waterway — Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti — has publicly agreed to participate or approved this escalation of the Gaza war to benefit Israel.
The Pentagon has also asked the Australian Navy for a frigate to join the Red Sea fleet, but the Australian government in Canberra is reluctant to agree, and Austin has dropped the country from his list.
All of the governments on Austin’s list, with the exception of the US, voted last week at the United Nations General Assembly for Israel to halt its operations in the Gaza war. In this context, none of these states recognizes Israel’s right to impose its blockade of Gaza’s ports extending into Palestine’s territorial waters, the Gaza Maritime Area, and Israel’s de facto military rule of the international waters of the Mediterranean, including the Gaza Marine gas field.
“Freedom of navigation”, Austin’s version of the legal doctrine of his Operation Prosperity Guardian, does not apply to the Gaza Maritime Area.
In the Red Sea, maps of the International Institute for the Law of the Sea Studies show overlapping territorial waters and economic zone claims from the eastern and western shore states, leaving no international waters for the passage of warships, particularly through the southern gateway to the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Austin’s operation is not innocent passage, as the international Law of the Sea requires, and it defies Yemen’s right to exercise prior authorization.
Russia’s response is no response, for the time being.

In an interview with a Russian-speaking American on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not explicitly address the new US intervention plan in the Middle East.
He did say that “Europe and the United States are now rushing in the Middle East, calling on the Lebanese, Iranians, Iraqis, and Syrians to do everything so that the war in Gaza does not spread to the surrounding territories. Perhaps they need to apply the same fervour to ensure that this does not happen in Ukraine.”
Also on Monday, in the Moscow newspaper Vedomosti, it was reported that Russian experts expect “most likely, the Americans will launch missile and bomb attacks on command centres and military depots of the Houthis, or targeted strikes by special forces may follow in order to eliminate the commanders of the movement. The operation will be roughly comparable to the actions of Western allies in Syria or Iraq.”
The newspaper claimed that, according to its source, “the military forces of Saudi Arabia and the UAE may participate in the operation – their armed forces and their proxies have been waging a sluggish war against Iran’s allies in Yemen since 2015. I think the Arab monarchies themselves would like to involve the Americans in the conflict, but it will not come to a full–scale war.”
The implication is that the Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry, and Kremlin are reluctant to publicly condemn the Austin fleet operation move so as not to upset current Russian relationships with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
What this means for Russia’s relationship with Iran materialized on Monday afternoon when the Iranian Ambassador to Moscow, Kasem Jilali (right), asked for a meeting at the Foreign Ministry, and met Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. If Yemen and the Red Sea were discussed, the official communiqué is keeping it secret. “During the conversation,” the ministry release says, “the Middle East agenda was discussed in detail, with an emphasis on developments in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone. There was general concern about the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip. The importance of intensifying international efforts aimed at an early ceasefire, providing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population and turning the situation into a political channel was stressed. The issues of the Syrian settlement were also touched upon, including the continuation of close coordination of efforts between Russia and Iran in the Astana format in the interests of supporting the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the SA [Syrian Arab Republic]”.

In the past, Moscow officials have consistently defended the Yemeni state’s sovereignty, including its territorial waters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Ministry has also defended “dialogue with the Houthis and other Yemeni political associations, as well as with all interested states”.
Russia has also proposed that the United Nations legalize and regulate all operations impacting Yemen.
But that was long ago. The last but one statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry mentioning the Houthis, the civil war in Yemen, and Saudi military intervention was issued six and a half years ago, on March 17, 2017: “We reaffirm our fundamental position in favour of an early cessation of hostilities and the resumption of a negotiation process in the Republic of Yemen, taking into account the interests of all leading political forces in the country. We continue to believe that the unilateral steps taken by the parties to the conflict, including the current court ruling, as well as the sea and air blockade of certain regions of Yemen controlled by the Houthis and Saleh supporters, are not conducive to creating a favourable environment for restoring trust and restarting the dialogue, and put off the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, which is so much needed by the long-suffering Yemeni people.”

In January 2018, Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi, Foreign Minister of the Aden-based Yemeni government, met Lavrov in Moscow for talks. “We believe,” Lavrov said at the press conference following their negotiations, “that the UN should henceforth be able to deliver humanitarian aid to Sanaa without fail. It is important to strive to lift the sea and air blockade, to remove all limitations on the deliveries of food, medicines and other prime necessities to all regions of Yemen with no exceptions…Yemen’s Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi and we have agreed to maintain close contacts both directly and via our embassy in Yemen, which due to security reasons has been recently relocated from Sanaa to Riyadh. At the same time, we will continue our dialogue with the Houthis and other Yemeni political associations, as well as with all interested states, including the Arab coalition, on which the further developments in the country and around it depend. We will urge everyone who can contribute to the settlement and the transition from war to a political dialogue to do so as soon as possible.
There is no Foreign Ministry record of a meeting with Hisham Sharaf, Foreign Minister since 2016 of the Sanaa-based Yemeni (Houthi) government. The Russian Embassy in Sanaa was evacuated in December 2017.
In November 2019, Moscow appeared to be saying the only international Red Sea operation it would countenance for Yemen should be led by the United Nations (UN). “We”, declared the Ministry’s press department, “urge the parties to the Yemeni conflict to do everything in their power to keep up this positive change so as to be able to stop the hostilities altogether and to launch a UN-led process of peaceful settlement based on the regard for the interests of all the main political forces as well as religious and regional groups in Yemen. We are still convinced that these developments will not only benefit friendly Yemen but will also help to ensure security of all the neighbouring countries.”
The Chinese government approach appears to be different.
On Sunday, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), the Chinese state-owned fleet company, announced that it is halting all shipments to and from Israeli seaports. However, unlike its European peers, OOCL did not say it will stop sailing through the Red Sea. The implication, a shipping source comments, is that Beijing has declared its support for the Arab-led blockade of Israel, and will negotiate directly with Houthi and Yemeni officials so that OOCL vessels will be able to navigate safely through the Red Sea and into the Suez Canal, and vice versa. The commercial advantage to the Chinese is plain, the source said. Whether the Chinese Navy will send escorts for Chinese-flagged cargo vessels remains to be seen.

The largest recipient of Israel lobby money is President Joe Biden. From the beginning of his political career, Biden, according to his biographer Branko Marcetic, “established himself as an implacable friend of Israel,” spending his Senate career “showering Israel with unquestioning support, even when its behavior elicited bipartisan outrage.” The future president was a key figure in securing record sums of U.S. aid to the Jewish state and helped block a 1998 peace proposal with Palestine.
The support for Israeli policies has continued into the present, with his administration insisting that there are “no red lines” that it could cross that would cause it to lose American support. In essence, Biden has given Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a carte blanche to break any rules, norms or laws he wishes to.
This has included ethnic cleansing and war crimes such as the bombing of schools, hospitals and places of worship using banned weapons like white phosphorous munitions. The arms Israel is using come supplied directly by the U.S. In November, the Biden administration rubber-stamped another $14.5 billion military aid package to Israel, ensuring the carnage would continue.
For his staunch support, Biden has received more than $4.3 million from pro-Israel groups since 1990.
#2 Robert Menéndez, $2,483,205
The New Jersey senator has received nearly $2.5 million in contributions and, in the wake of the Hamas attack on October 7, has been a key figure in drumming up support for Israel.
Describing Operation Al-Aqsa Flood as “barbaric atrocities” that were an “affront to humankind itself,” Menéndez gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor where he addressed Biden directly, stating:
Mr. President, in the face of unspeakable evil, we must not mince words. We must not waver in our resolve. Every single one of us in this chamber has a moral responsibility to speak out — unequivocally and unapologetically — as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel and her people. I’ve been staunchly devoted to this cause for 31 years in Congress.”
He went on to claim that Israel and the United States are intrinsically linked and were founded on the same principles.
Menéndez also courted controversy after he demanded that the U.S. help Israel “wipe Hamas from the face of the Earth,” even as Israel was leveling Gaza by carpet bombing it.
In October, he co-sponsored a Senate resolution “standing with Israel against terrorism” that passed unanimously, without dissent.
#3 Mitch McConnell, $1,953,160
The Senate Minority Leader is one of the most powerful politicians in America and has used his influence to attempt to force through legislation criminalizing BDS. He has described the peaceful tactic as “an economic form of anti-Semitism that targets Israel.”

McConnell is known to be very close to Prime Minister Netanyahu and supported a bill condemning the United Nations and calling on the U.S. to continue to veto any U.N. resolution critical of Israel. Last month, he strongly opposed steps taken towards applying basic U.S. and international law on weapons shipments to Israel.
Under current U.S. law, Washington is duty-bound to stop supplying arms to nations committing serious human rights violations. McConnell, however, said that applying these standards to Israel would be “ridiculous,” explaining that:
Our relationship with Israel is the closest national security relationship we have with any country in the world, and to condition, in effect, our assistance to Israel to their meeting our standards it seems to me is totally unnecessary… This is a democracy, a great ally of ours, and I do not think we need to condition the support that hopefully we will give to Israel very soon.”
#4 Chuck Schumer, $1,725,324
McConnell has received nearly $2 million from pro-Israel groups.
Next on the list is McConnell’s Democratic opponent, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who had taken over $1.7 million from Israel lobbying groups. In recent weeks, Schumer has taken the lead in steering the public conversation away from Israel’s crimes and towards a supposed rise in anti-Semitism across America. “To us, the Jewish people, the rise in anti-semitism is a crisis. A five-alarm fire that must be extinguished,” the New York Senator said, adding that “Jewish-Americans are feeling singled out, targeted and isolated. In many ways, we feel alone.”
The idea that anti-Semitic hate is exploding across the United States comes largely from a report published by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which claims that anti-Semitic incidents have risen by 337% since October 7.
Buried in the small print, however, is the fact that 45% of these “anti-Semitic” incidents the ADL has tallied are pro-Palestine, pro-peace marches calling for ceasefires, including ones led by Jewish groups like If Not Now or Jewish Voice for Peace. (MintPress recently published an investigation into the ADL’s fudged numbers and its history of working for Israel and spying on progressive American groups.)
Schumer, however, has deliberately tried to conflate opposition to Israel’s bombardment of its neighbors with anti-Jewish racism, writing:
Today, too many Americans are exploiting arguments against Israel and leaping toward a virulent antisemitism. The normalization and intensifying of this rise in hate is the danger many Jewish people fear most.”
He has even gone so far as to label Dave Zirin – a Jewish journalist who supports justice for Palestinians – as an anti-Semite.
As Senate Majority Leader, Schumer has used his influence to push through military aid packages to Israel, even as it carries out actions many have labeled war crimes, writing that:
One of the most important tasks we must finish is taking up and passing a funding bill to ensure we, as well as our friends and partners in Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region, have the necessary military capabilities to confront and deter our adversaries and competitors.”
He added that “Senators should be prepared to stay in Washington until we finish our work” and that they should expect to work “long days and nights, and potentially weekends in December,” until the deal was done.
#5 Steny Hoyer, $1,620,294
The former House Majority Leader is one of Israel’s most vocal supporters in the House of Representatives. Hoyer has demanded that “Congress must immediately and unconditionally fund Israel,” thereby giving the Netanyahu administration the green light to do whatever it pleases.
An ardent Zionist, the Maryland native explained that he believes it is:
…[T]he world’s duty that set aside a land, a land that Israel has occupied for millennia, and said: this is your place of security, this is your place of sovereignty, this is your place of safety.”
Earlier this month, Hoyer also voted in favor of a bill stating that anti-Zionism is inherently anti-Semitic, thereby declaring all criticism of Israel to be invalid and racist.
Hoyer has received more than $1.6 million in donations from pro-Israel lobbying groups.
#6 Ted Cruz, $1,299,194
Over his career, the Texas Republican has received $1.3 million from the Israel lobby. After October 7, Cruz sprang into action, announcing that it was “critical” that every American supports Israel “100 percent.” “Israel is going to be demonized by Democrats in the current corrupt corporate media. We need to make clear that Hamas is using human shields and Israel has a right to defend itself,” Cruz said, hitting many of the classic pro-Israel talking points.
Cruz also went above and beyond in his defense of Israeli crimes in a bizarre interview with Breaking Points’ Ryan Grim. When asked if he opposes Israeli officials suggesting a nuclear attack on Gaza, Cruz replied:
I condemn nothing that the Israeli government is doing. The Israeli government does not target civilians; they target military targets… There is no military on the face of the planet, including the U.S. military, that goes to the lengths that the Israeli military goes to avoid civilian casualties.”
When confronted with statements from the IDF directly refuting his point, noting that their focus is on damage, not precision, Cruz flipped his answer around, replying, “Yes, damage to Hamas, to terrorists.” And when Grim gave him more statements from senior IDF officials explicitly contradicting his previous statement, Cruz retorted, “That’s simply not true. They are targeting the terrorists,” thereby defending the IDF even from itself.
#7 Ron Wyden, $1,279,376
Senator Ron Wyden (D—OR) has long been one of Israel’s staunchest advocates in Washington, supporting President Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and opposing BDS in all its forms.
In 2017, he co-sponsored a bill that made it a federal crime, punishable by a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, for Americans to participate in or even encourage boycotts against Israel and illegal Israeli settlements.
On the settlements, he was one of the most vigorous opponents of UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which describes them as a “flagrant violation” of international law.
For his troubles, Wyden has received $1,279,376 from pro-Israel groups.
#8 Dick Durbin, $1,126,020
The Illinois Democrat has called for immediate military aid to Israel and co-signed a Senate resolution reaffirming Washington’s support for Israel’s “right to self-defense” in the wake of October 7.
Despite this, he has angered some in the pro-Israel crowd by supporting President Obama’s initiatives to reduce tensions with Iran and has now come out in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza.
#9 Josh Gottheimer, $1,109,370
Despite only being in office since 2017, Gottheimer has already received more than $1.1 million from pro-Israel lobbying groups. The New Jersey Congressman has served as a pro-Israeli attack dog in Washington, co-sponsoring the bill equating opposition to Israeli government policy with anti-Semitism and introducing legislation to block and criminalize boycotting the state of Israel.
In the wake of October 7, Gottheimer has attempted to cancel a number of public figures. Earlier this month, for instance, he tried to pressure Rutgers University into calling off an event on Palestine featuring former CNN anchor Marc Lamont Hill and organizer and journalist Nick Estes, both of whom support Palestinian rights and statehood.
Gottheimer has even caused rifts within his own party, attacking the small, progressive wing of Democrats who have failed to toe the line on Israel and Hamas. “Last night, 15 of my Democratic colleagues voted AGAINST standing with our ally Israel and condemning Hamas terrorists who brutally murdered, raped, and kidnapped babies, children, men, women, and elderly, including Americans. They are despicable and do not speak for our party,” he wrote, making a number of highly incendiary and questionable assertions.
Perhaps no other political case reveals the power of the Israel lobby than Shontel Brown. In 2021, Nina Turner, a democratic socialist, national co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ 2020 election campaign, and an outspoken advocate for justice in Palestine, ran for election in Ohio’s 11th congressional district. Her opponent was the little-known but strongly pro-Israel Brown.
Brown received more pro-Israel money than any other politician nationwide during that two-year election cycle, helping her overcome a double-digit polling deficit to defeat Turner. Over $1 million was spent plastering Cleveland with attack ads against Turner. In her acceptance speech, Brown praised Israel and later thanked the Jewish community for “help[ing] me get over the finish line”
Since then, she has supported Israeli actions in Gaza and rejected the idea of Israel as an apartheid state, writing:
Let’s be clear: Israel is not an apartheid state. Any mischaracterizations otherwise attempt to delegitimize Israel, a robust democracy, and will only serve to fuel rising antisemitism. I will always advocate for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship founded on our shared values.”

From the rate and scale of civilian slaughter to the killing of protected groups and the type of munitions, Israel’s war on Gaza is an exceptionally brutal campaign unlike almost anything we’ve seen.
That’s an important statistic, because it’s maybe the leading indicator — but by no means the only one — that what we are seeing play out in Gaza daily is not “just another terrible war” but something altogether different.
Consider the verdict of those who have spent their lives and careers in the world’s worst war zones. Martin Griffiths — a long-serving United Nations humanitarian official who started his career in genocide-ravaged Cambodia and served everywhere from Yemen to post-earthquake Syria — has called Gaza the “worst ever” humanitarian crisis he’s seen. Other UN officials have called Gaza “a living nightmare” and “absolutely unprecedented and staggering,” and have described the conditions on the ground as “apocalyptic.”
“I feel like I am running out of ways to describe the horrors hitting children here,” said UNICEF spokesperson James Elder. European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has similarly called the situation in Gaza “catastrophic, apocalyptic,” with the scale of destruction “even greater than the destruction suffered by the German cities during the Second World War.”
These statements are borne out by the numbers, which clearly show that Israel’s military campaign has been exceptional in its indiscriminate brutality. True to Borrell’s words, a Financial Times analysis found that after only six weeks, northern Gaza had been reduced to rubble on a scale comparable only to the carpet-bombing of German cities in World War II. With 68 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed in northern Gaza by the start of this month, the flattening of that area is worse than the notorious bombings of Dresden and Cologne, and approaching the 75 percent destruction rate of Hamburg.
Furthermore, roughly 70 percent of Palestinians killed so far have been women and children. This is a staggering proportion that sets Gaza apart from some of this century’s worst wars.
At the height of the Syrian civil war in 2015 and 2016, a conflict considered especially deadly for women and children, those two groups comprised 25 percent of the civilians killed by one count, or 37 percent by another. When civilian deaths in Afghanistan reached an all-time high in the first half of 2021, women and children comprised 46 percent of all civilian casualties. Over the first two years of the Iraq War, that figure was just under 20 percent. In Yemen — generally considered one of this century’s ghastliest wars — from 2018 to 2022, women and children made up 33 percent of civilian casualties, according to data compiled by the Civilian Impact Monitoring Project on the consequences of armed violence. (If indirect causes of the war like starvation and disease are accounted for, Yemen’s numbers are significantly higher.)
“Gaza is becoming a graveyard for children,” UN secretary-general António Guterres said last month. Sure enough, Gaza’s children, who made up nearly half of the enclave’s population before the war, have been killed on a scale unmatched by other recent conflicts.
After only three weeks of attacks, Israeli forces had killed more children in Gaza than the number of children killed in all the world’s conflicts over an entire year, outstripping that total for every year since 2019. In fact, with the death toll for Gazan children now standing at more than 7,870, Israeli forces have killed almost the same number of children as those killed in all of the world’s wars over those three years combined (8,174).
According to Al Jazeera, in just two months, the IDF has killed nearly the same number of children that were killed over the eleven years of the Afghanistan War (8,099) and nearly double the official number of kids killed over seven and a half years of the Yemen war (3,774). Even if we take the appalling higher count of children killed in Syria’s twelve-year-long civil war (30,127), its seven-child-deaths-a-day average is still far outpaced by the 160-per-day rate achieved by Israel — a rate that, if it remains consistent, would overtake the Syrian war’s child death toll in less than a year.
The Casualties of This War Are Outstripping Similar Conflicts
These figures are bad enough. But even if we look beyond the child death toll and compare Israel’s campaign to war zones where children don’t make up as high a proportion of citizenry as they do in Gaza, this war is still exceptionally brutal.
Indiscriminate and disproportionate killing is nothing unusual when it comes to Israel’s various wars on Gaza over the years. But this one stands apart even among those. According to an analysis by Open University of Israel sociology professor Yagil Levy, even a very conservative estimate of the civilian death toll in Israel’s current war — 61 percent — would put it at a far higher proportion than Israel’s previous military campaigns in the territory, higher even than the average civilian death toll over every war fought from World War II until the 1990s.
According to the United Nations, at the time of writing, 19,453 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, with women and children comprising more than 13,000 of the dead, putting the total Palestinian civilian death toll somewhere between these two figures (not counting those missing or buried under rubble). Israeli officials claim they’ve killed 5,000 Hamas fighters, a dubious figure that would effectively mean almost every single Palestinian man killed in the war has been a noncivilian — and it’s even more dubious when we consider that Hamas’s 30,000 fighters comprised only 1.4 percent of Gaza’s prewar population.
In any case, compare this to the 15,000 civilians killed by direct military action from 2015 to 2019 in Yemen, generally considered one of this century’s worst wars. The number of Palestinians killed so far, after just over two months of Israeli bombardment and ground invasion, is more than the yearly death toll of most of the years of Yemen’s conflict, by one conservative estimate.
The Israeli campaign has also outpaced the brutality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the focus of much of the world’s outrage over the past two years. It took twenty-one months for the civilian death toll to cross 10,000 in Ukraine, including more than 560 children killed. By contrast, it took Israel only forty-five days to cross the threshold of 10,000 women and children killed, and it had killed at least 583 Palestinian children after just six days.
Or consider the Syrian city of Aleppo, virtually synonymous with senseless human carnage throughout the 2010s. Around 31,000 people died as a result of the notoriously cruel and indiscriminate four-year campaign by the Syrian government to retake the city, which means Israel is already more than halfway to reaching that total in a fraction of the time. In fact, the monthly average of 8,589 Palestinians killed by December 7 is far beyond the deadliest months and even some years of the Syrian war as a whole, a war considered so brutal it inspired constant calls for military intervention, attempts at regime change, and years of crippling US sanctions and bombings of the country.
The 2011 civil war in Libya and dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s threats of reprisal against rebel forces likewise triggered impassioned pleas for Western military intervention to protect civilians. Those pleas were soon acted on and morphed into a disastrous regime change operation. According to Airwars, the highest estimates count 3,400 civilians killed over the eight months between that war’s start and Gaddafi’s murder, with the dictator responsible for as many as 2,300 of those deaths — about one-fifth of just the number of women and children Israeli forces had killed in a quarter of the time.
Israel’s campaign doesn’t fare much better next to some of the worst US wars, either. The 2016–2017 battle against ISIS in the Iraqi city of Mosul was widelyheld up as a shockingexhibition of Donald Trump’s scandalous disregard for innocent lives, claiming as many as 11,000 civilians over nine months — a total and rate of killing that both fall short of what Israel’s managed so far.
In fact, Israel has already killed more women and children than all the civilians US forces killed in both the first and second years of the Iraq War, and at least nine other years of that invasion. They’ve killed more civilians than the US military killed over nearly two decades in Afghanistan. The Palestinian death toll is already approaching the 21,000 civilians killed over the first two years of US bombing of Vietnam, today considered one of the most shameful episodes in US history and an event that destroyed the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.
Journalists, Medics, and UN Workers Are Being Slaughtered
But it’s not just the civilian death toll that points to the exceptional violence of this war, which has been uniquely lethal to groups that are generally considered off-limits in modern warfare.
Take journalists. By whatever count you use — estimates range from fifty-six killed, on the low end, to as many as sixty-eight — journalists’ rights groups are in agreement that this has been an extraordinarily deadly war for reporters, inarguably the worst this century, if not the worst since journalist deaths started being tracked in the early 1990s, according to two separate organizations. It has been “a scale and pace of loss of media professionals’ lives without precedent,” the International Federation of Journalists recently said. And some of those deaths have been deliberate assassinations.
After only a month of fighting, the United Nations (UN) had seen 101 of its staff killed in Gaza, the largest loss of life among its workers in a single conflict in the organization’s entire history. That death toll is now up to 130. This news has come as Israeli officials have verballyattacked top UN officials, charged the organization with being “contaminated with antisemitism,” threatened to expel it from the Palestinian territories (and did so), and accused UN workers of being part of Hamas. Israeli bombing has now also killed a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) contractor and his family, as well as a French diplomat.
The war has likewise been a bloodbath for medics. The Palestinian health minister put the health care worker death toll in Gaza at 250 earlier this month, while the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations recently placed it at 283. Either total is more than all of the health care workers killed across all of the world’s conflicts during the entirety of 2022, which was declared the most violent year of the past decade for health care workers by the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition. And it is more than the total killed in every year documented by the organization goingbackto at least2017. By comparison to the first year of the Ukraine war, Russian forces carried out far more attacks on the Ukrainian health sector, but they killed sixty-two health workers — a shocking figure that nevertheless pales in comparison to the number in Gaza.
A large part of the reason for this level of lethality is the unique ferocity of the Israeli bombing campaign, coupled with a new level of disregard for civilian casualties. After just five days, Israel had dropped six thousand bombs on Gaza. That’s approaching the highest number of bombs and other munitions dropped on Afghanistan in a single year since 2006 (7,423), and the total number of bombs and missiles dropped by NATO over the entire Libyan intervention (7,600). It’s also far more than the average number of bombs dropped per month on Iraq and Syria (2,500) in the battle against ISIS.
Since then, Israel has reportedly dropped a total of 29,000 munitions on Gaza, or an average of nearly 500 bombs per day. That’s about the same amount the United States and UK dropped on Iraq in that invasion’s first month — a country 1,200 times the size and about one-hundredth of the population density of Gaza in 2003 — and more than the total number of bombs dropped by the United States in all countries over the entirety of 2016.
It’s also more than the 20,650 Trump dropped in his first six months in office, considered shocking and unprecedented at the time. To put it into perspective, Israel’s average number of bombs dropped per day is orders of magnitude more than the US daily average across all war zones for the past twenty years (forty-six) and more than the daily average of glide bombs Vladimir Putin was dropping on Ukraine earlier this year (twenty). Last month, the Russian leader made headlines for what was an unprecedentedly ferocious set of strikes in Ukraine, dropping eighty-seven bombs on the Kherson region.
It’s not just the scale of bombing but the type of bombs being used. Israel has made liberal use of very large munitions in the densely populated enclave: bombs weighing 1,000 to 2,000 pounds made up 90 percent of Israeli munitions dropped in the first two weeks, according to the New York Times, while US military officials believe even 500-pound bombs were too large for them to use in urban areas in the Middle East. In addition, 40 to 45 percent of the bombs dropped so far have reportedly been unguided, “dumb” munitions, prone to causing more civilian casualties. This is a bigger proportion than that used in US wars like Iraq (35 percent), Bosnia (31 percent), and Libya (0 percent).
A bombshell investigation by the Israeli digital publication +972 Magazine, published last month, had multiple intelligence sources telling the magazine that Israel had significantly relaxed its already loose restrictions on bombing civilian targets. The Israeli military knew exactly how many civilians were likely to die in every strike, they said, tolerated more civilian deaths if it saved time or meant killing a Hamas commander, and even greenlit deliberate attacks on civilian targets in the hope that the resulting destruction would push Gazans to put “pressure” on Hamas. These confessions lend credence to a senior US intelligence officer’s recent statement that “it’s hard to come to any other conclusion” than that the Israeli military is deliberately punishing the entire population of Gaza.
Looking Beyond the Numbers
Even a cursory glance at the facts and figures above is enough to understand that what the Israeli military is doing in Gaza is not just another terrible modern war but something far worse and more hideous.
These statistics are damning in themselves. But they also have to be taken in the context of the weeks and months of statements from top Israeli officials and politicians drawing on shockingly racist, dehumanizing rhetoric about Palestinians, expressing the idea that ordinary civilians are guilty for Hamas’s crimes and are legitimate military targets, and voicing the desire to kill and destroy as much as possible in Gaza and make it uninhabitable. They must also be taken alongside the numerous reports since the start of the conflict on Israeli proposals to transfer Palestinians out of Gaza, “thin out” its population, and occupy and possibly annex the territory, including a recent five-point plan presented by one Likud member of parliament.
What’s required to stop this is not another disastrous war or regime change — which the United States and its partners have resorted to in the past for far less when an unfriendly state has been the one carrying out atrocities — but simply depriving the Israeli military of the weapons it needs to carry out this mass slaughter. Unfortunately, the Biden administration refuses to do this. At the rate Israeli forces are killing people, and with disease and hunger set to start taking many more lives in Gaza, allowing this carnage to continue will only turn what is already an exceptionally savage military campaign into something even more unspeakable.
