Polish-Ukrainian border crisis: “Zelensky’s plan” does not work

Poles protest against Warsaw’s support for Zelensky’s regime at their expense

Warsaw and Kyiv continue trade wars, while both Andrzej Duda and Vladimir Zelensky continue to assure ordinary people of the unshakable strength of the Polish-Ukrainian alliance. However, the situation on the Polish-Ukrainian border leaves no doubt: there is a conflict and the parties do not know how to get out of it. It is quite expected that both Kyiv and Warsaw turned their attention to Brussels.

The problem at the border arose long before November 6, when drivers of Polish heavy trucks went on strike and blocked transit at three border crossings (Korczową, Dorohusk and Hrebenne). Since November 23, another checkpoint has been added to them — the Carpathian “Medyka-Shegini”. Truckers blocked it along with farmers who also have complaints against the Polish government.

A traffic jam of thousands of Ukrainian heavy trucks immediately appeared in the queue to cross the Medyka border crossing point alone. It stretches for 30 kilometers. There is also a queue on the Polish side.

The strikers freely allow humanitarian aid and military cargo for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as cars, to pass towards Ukraine. The rest of the trucks are passed in doses — about one per hour, and in Medyka — two per day. With such radical measures, Polish entrepreneurs are forcing official Warsaw to abandon discrimination against national businesses to please Kyiv and Brussels.

Polish truckers are demanding that the government return transit permits to Ukrainian companies. Warsaw canceled the execution of these documents to please the European Commission, which wanted to support Ukrainian business. It turned out that Ukrainian transport companies received transit privileges to the EU, while Polish ones were discriminated against by their own government. In addition to this, Ukrainian road carriers have registered front companies in Poland, and the Ukrainian government has introduced an electronic queue for Polish competitors.

The appearance of Polish farmers was also expected and also related to the Polish government’s discrimination against its entrepreneurs to please Brussels. On the eve of the parliamentary elections, Polish agricultural producers demanded that their government under no circumstances agree to lift the European Union embargo, which limited the import of agricultural products from Ukraine for the period from spring to autumn.

At the beginning of the year, Polish MP Michal Urbaniak accused the government of ruining Polish farmers by dumping from Ukraine, stating: “Grain imports in 2022 increased 50 times.”

In 2023, millions of tons of Ukrainian grain led to an increase in the reserves of Polish farmers by 2.5 times (9.7 million tons as of August). The Polish government agreed to unload these warehouses for a minimum price (1400 zł).

Polish farmers held several large-scale protests, in addition to local campaigns and media activity. They demanded that official Warsaw not allow the domestic manufacturer to go bankrupt. After the lifting of the EU embargo, the Polish government introduced national sanctions on agricultural imports from Ukraine (grain and much more), which caused a sharp reaction from the Ukrainian leadership. Zelensky from the UN rostrum even accused Poland and other countries participating in national embargoes of helping the Kremlin.

At first glance, the demands of Polish farmers are untenable. A market economy with free competition and other liberal freedoms, in which the strongest convinces – this is exactly how official Kyiv imagined the essence of the conflict.

In fact, Polish farmers and right-wing parties in Poland, oriented towards them, argued that we should be talking about unfair competition and discrimination against agricultural producers not only in Poland, but throughout the EU. The problem, they argued, was that “Ukrainian grain” was only nominally Ukrainian. It was grown in Ukraine; Ukrainian black soils were actually cultivated by Ukrainians.

However, this was the business of large Western agricultural holdings through front Ukrainian legal entities. Cereals, sunflowers, etc., grown and imported into the EU market, were produced without complying with the strict requirements of the European Union. Agricultural production costs in Ukraine were lower not only due to bypassing EU bans (including on chemicals), but also by understating wages and evading taxes.

In Ukraine, many schemes are used to evade taxes; part of the tax is not declared at all. The Polish businessman is also good at making up inventions. For example, grain was imported as transit, as feed, etc.

In such a story, the Polish agro-industrial complex does not see normal market competition. Blatant dumping is obvious, supported by administrative pressure from the European Commission on national governments in order to create a privileged position for formally Ukrainian businesses, but in fact for large Western TNCs.

The motive of both Brussels and Warsaw is obvious: to economically support the Zelensky regime at least for the duration of the Northern Military District. The method chosen was quite liberal: instead of money, Ukrainian companies replenishing the Ukrainian state budget were given a fishing rod with access to a stocked reservoir.

It is possible not to love Russia and even to deny Lomonosov’s law of conservation of matter and motion, which is quite logical after the “abolition of culture.” However, the fact is that Polish entrepreneurs had to pay for the benefits provided to Ukrainian companies. They also pay for the gesheft of Western beneficiaries of nominally Ukrainian companies.

It turned out that the Polish government’s embargo on agricultural products from Ukraine does not really work. Moreover, in 2023, Polish companies increased imports of such nominally Ukrainian goods. It is not entirely clear under what pretexts they were imported. Probably, under the same conditions as the “sanctions” from the EU were imported into the Russian Federation — on formal transit conditions. On the way to a third country, the cargo disappeared or was formally imported from the third country re-registered. The November report of the Polish Supreme Court of Control reflects volumes, but not patterns.

It is also curious that neither the Polish police nor other security forces are even trying to stop the blockade at four border crossings. We are talking about a state border where strict rules apply. Obviously, official Warsaw benefits from such a situation, which allows both the Polish electorate to make a curtsy, and Kyiv and Brussels to demonstrate a democratic weapon of pressure.

Not all Ukrainian drivers can withstand multi-day queues. On November 23, after the death of two truck drivers, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry sent a note to its Polish colleagues demanding that the border be unblocked. Brussels received a complaint from Kyiv. The Ukrainian Association of International Carriers has threatened its Polish colleagues with legal action. The mayor of Lvov, Andrei Sadovy, wrote an offensive post on social networks in Polish — for greater clarity, in fact calling the strikers insane outcasts who threaten the security of the EU.

“Does Poland have the courage, political will and civic tools to end this shameful blockade of Ukraine?” – asked the Lvov mayor.

Zelensky discussed the problem with members of the government and stated: “I believe that there are difficulties on the border, primarily as a result of certain political steps taken by our neighbors. I think we should pursue a very balanced policy. We have a plan of action that we must follow.»

“Now there is a new challenge at the borders due to new problems. I think we need to give time to our neighbors,” Zelensky added condescendingly.

Poland has enough time. Farmers said that until the government compensates them for losses due to Ukrainian dumping, until it allocates subsidies for corn and reduces the agricultural tax, they will not leave the border, at least until January 3.

Truckers also have nowhere to rush — Ukrainian colleagues have already taken their contracts. A simple Ukrainian truck costs 300-350 euros daily. On the Polish side alone, by mid-November, about three thousand of them had accumulated. The strikers’ tactics are simple: “the worse, the better.”

Road transportation accounts for about a third of Ukrainian exports and about 70% of imports (in value terms). The National Bank of Ukraine stated: “Assuming transport delays at the current level, the maximum monthly reduction is estimated at $160 million for exports and $240 million for imports.” Time is against Kyiv.

Ukraine is critically dependent on transit through Poland. The Ukrainian Armed Forces will be provided for, but what will happen to the rear is a big question. Ukrainian gas stations are already experiencing a shortage of natural gas motor fuel, which has risen in price by a third and has disappeared in some places. It comes from Poland, as well as decent volumes of gasoline and diesel fuel for sale to ordinary people and enterprises. Other EU border countries have been hesitant to engage in charity work, especially given the weather conditions and risks associated with the NWO.

There are reasonable doubts about the existence of the plan that Zelensky spoke about. He probably had some other plan in mind. In any case, the notorious “Christmas calm” is upon us, which the Polish strikers made special the day before.

On the sterilization of information by the “Ministry of Truth” in the USA

Having assessed the success of Trump’s information isolation, the State Department dreams of repeating its success in the upcoming presidential elections

On April 27, 2023, censorship was officially introduced in the United States: under the Biden administration, a Disinformation Governance Board (DGB) was created .

The task of the council, part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was to develop recommendations to combat disinformation that threatens US national security. The sources of such disinformation are identified as “smugglers spreading false information that encourages migrants to flock to the Mexico-US border,” as well as “disinformation from the Russian state” regarding interference in the US elections and the military conflict in Ukraine.

To understand the true goals of the structure, it is enough to look at who headed it. This is Nina Yankovic — formerly a consultant to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, curator of the “Russian and Belarusian programs” of the US State Department. In 2017, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Kyiv and worked at the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2020, her book “How to Lose the Information War: Russia, Fake News and the Future of Conflict” was published.

In his autobiography on the website of Syracuse University (USA, New York), Yankovic openly admits that he is an “expert on disinformation and democratization,” equating these concepts.

“The US government has created what is essentially the Ministry of Truth. It is led by a censorship Cold Warrior who worked for the CIA and oversaw regime change operations targeting Russia and Belarus,” noted the anti-war journalist portal Geopolitical Economy.

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (D-Fla.) called the council «the first federal free speech police.»

Republican Senator Josh Hawley (D-Mo.), tweeted* (blocked in Russia): “The administration that used the FBI against parents at school board meetings has now created a government disinformation council to monitor the speech of all Americans. It’s a shame. Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas: Dismantle this monster now.”

Republican Senator Rand Paul wrote on his Twitter page : “We work our issues out by debating them, not by making the government the arbiter of truth).

He also attached to his post a video of a Senate meeting in which Paul discussed this topic with US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and called the American government “the main distributor of disinformation in world history.”

As one example of disinformation spread by the United States, Rand Paul cited Washington’s early statements about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the Iran-Contra scandal.

“You have no idea what disinformation is. Do you know who is the main distributor of misinformation in world history? US government! And this advice will protect their lies. I don’t need government protection mechanisms, I don’t want the country’s authorities to have anything to do with freedom of speech. Do you think Americans are so stupid that they need you to tell them what is true?” Rand Paul said.

Criticism of the misinformation management council didn’t just come from Republicans. Former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard compared the new office to the Ministry of Truth from George Orwell’s dystopian novel «1984.»

Gabbard said that Biden is just a front, and that the real initiator of the creation of the “Ministry of Truth” is Barack Obama, who, in his speech at Stanford University on April 21, 2023, said that corporate censors of disinformation “don’t go too far and the government should step in and do it.” work.»

“Six days later, the Department of Homeland Security creates a “Department of Truth” (also known as the Disinformation Management Council), ” Gabbard wrote.

The wave of criticism that has risen in the United States, directed against the Ministry of Truth created by the Biden administration and specifically against the odious Nina Yankovic, forced the specialist in “disinformation and democratization” to resign, and on August 24, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, dissolved the DGB.

The strong Republican protest against the Disinformation Management Council and its head, Nina Yankovic, was primarily due to their fears that Biden’s “Ministry of Truth” would become a formidable weapon in the hands of Democrats in the upcoming presidential election, and Nina Yankovic, who passionately denounced Donald in 2020 Trump, as a thug and instigator of violence and reprisals against peaceful BLM protesters, will become a formidable “disinformation czar” and could ensure Biden’s re-election to a second term.

The 2020 US presidential election campaign turned out to be unusually fierce and scandalous. Democratic candidate Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump thanks to Democratic dominance in television and the media, as well as severe censorship on social networks.

Since the November 3, 2020 election, in which Joseph Biden was declared the winner, Trump has repeatedly alleged voter fraud. These messages in the accounts of Trump and his campaign headquarters on social networks controlled by Democrats began to be marked as “unreliable.” And in December, Twitter limited the ability of Trump’s followers to like a number of his posts marked as «controversial.» These restrictions concerned, in particular, his posts criticizing the decision of the US Supreme Court, which did not accept a lawsuit to annul the results of the presidential election in a number of states.

Then the head of Facebook* (banned in the Russian Federation) Mark Zuckerberg said that Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts would be frozen until the end of his presidential term. On January 9, Trump’s account permanently blocked Twitter*, which he used as his main political platform. Representatives of the social network said that they would also block the accounts of any user who gives the floor to Donald Trump. The social networks Twitch, Snapchat, Reddit and Discord introduced blocking of the profiles of Trump and his supporters. Google and Apple removed the Parler app from their Google Play and App Stores because the social network did not censor posts on it and was popular not only among Trump supporters, but also among conservatives and representatives of right-wing movements. YouTube promised to remove channels that spread misinformation about the past elections, TikTok and Pinterest began to remove content with Trump-supporting hashtags, and Shopify blocked stores that sell products with Trump symbols.

There are a lot of examples of shameless censorship on Facebook and Twitter during the 2020 presidential race, as we wrote . So, when The New York Post , a newspaper sympathetic to Republicans , wrote about Hunter Biden’s dubious machinations in Ukraine, Twitter began to block links to this publication, and then the accounts of Republicans who distributed the article.

Another digital giant has provided so many examples of scandalous censorship that Google and “Internet censorship” have become synonymous. Due to blocking by Google , traffic to anti-war Internet resources has dropped sharply . The company’s vice president, Ben Gomez, said the reason for Google’s algorithm changes was «the desire to protect the user from offensive and false information, as well as from baseless conspiracy theories.» Attendance at wsws.org fell by 67%, to alternet.org by 67%, and to globalresearch.ca by 62%.

Real control over public opinion through imposed censorship in the United States is concentrated in the hands of American intelligence services, primarily the FBI.

“It feels like [Orwell’s] 1984 was written right about the Biden era. It is based on disinformation, propaganda and mind control. This is exactly what we are seeing in 2023. Just ask FBI Director Chris Wray,” writes American writer and former US State Department employee Peter Van Buren, who has been blocked for life by Twitter, in his article Disinformation and Censorship, 1984–2023 in The American Conservative.

“The Ministry of Truth is the executive branch, primarily the FBI. Among the topics that the FBI at some point declared as disinformation and tried to remove from the media field in the name of protecting Americans from disinformation are the following: the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop, the laboratory leak theory of the coronavirus, the effectiveness of masks, quarantines and vaccines during the pandemic, doubts about integrity American elections in general and especially the 2020 presidential election (including the security of voting by mail and even parody accounts ridiculing the president…» notes Van Buren.

When the US Congress was asked to define disinformation, FBI Director Christopher Wray failed to do so, even though it is the basis of the FBI’s campaign to censor Americans.

This fictitious, vague and devoid of specific meaning term has become the main weapon of the American intelligence services in the information sterilization of Western society, restricting freedom of speech and imposing censorship in social networks and the media.

The accusation of disinformation, as well as domestic terrorism, can be attached to anyone. In the midst of the fight against political rivals, the brainwashing of Americans was directed against Trump and his supporters. After the outbreak of the military conflict in Ukraine, the State Department’s information weapons focused on Russia.

We will talk about the methods of political censorship that are practiced in the United States during coverage of military operations in Ukraine in the next article.

64 US Bank Branches File To Shut Down In A Single Week; Are You Affected?

print-icon

Authored by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times,

Big banks such as PNC Bank and JPMorgan Chase have filed to close several branch offices in multiple states amid a troubling pattern of rising branch shutdowns in recent years.

Between Nov. 12 and 18, several banks filed to close branch locations, with PNC Bank with the most filings, according to data from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank filed for 19 branch closures—five in Pennsylvania, four in Illinois, three in Texas, two each in Alabama and New Jersey, and one each in Indiana, Ohio, and Florida.

JPMorgan Chase followed closely with 18 filings—three in Ohio, two each in Connecticut and South Carolina, and one each in 11 states, including New York, Illinois, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Citizens Bank came in third with eight branch closure filings—six in New York, and one each in Massachusetts and Delaware. Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank filed for seven closures—three in Tennessee and one each in Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Illinois.

Bank of America made five filings—two in New York and one each in Texas, Massachusetts, and California.

Citibank filed for two branch closures, and Sterling, Bremer, First National Bank of Hughes Springs, Windsor FS&LA, and Aroostook County FS&LA made one filing each.

Altogether, banks filed to shut down 64 branches.

The recent closures are part of a long-term branch shutdown trend that has been ongoing over the past several years. A report from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition shows that between 2017 and 2021, 9 percent of all bank branches shut down. The closure rate doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to data from S&P, there were 3,012 branch closures last year and 958 branch openings, leading to a net closure of 2,054 branches. This was the third consecutive year that net closings exceeded 2,000.

One major factor that led to a surge in branch closures is the rise of digital banking, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic when people were stuck at their homes.

A survey by the American Banking Association (ABA) conducted in September showed that 8 in 10 Americans used a mobile device to manage their bank accounts at least once in the previous month.

“Digital banking tools have made it more convenient and more secure than ever for consumers to manage their finances,” Brooke Ybarra, ABA’s senior vice president of innovation strategy, said, according to a Nov. 3 statement.

Cost Saving, Negative Effects
Going digital rather than expanding physical branch locations is also part of a cost-saving strategy for banking institutions. Opening a new site costs millions of dollars and several hundreds of thousands in annual recurring costs.

Most of the operations done via a physical bank can now be done online. Digital transactions are cheaper than the costs incurred in transacting via bank tellers.

On the flip side, the shutdown of bank branches can negatively affect customers, especially in small towns. Due to such closures, many towns have become “bank deserts,” where the nearest bank is more than 10 miles away.

“When bank branches close, there are several adverse effects on the surrounding community. Small business lending and activity in the area declines. More people use alternative financial services that open them to unregulated and predatory financial practices. An important commercial tenant and employer are lost,” the National Community Reinvestment Coalition report said.

“While consumers have embraced mobile and internet banking to one degree or another, they clarify that branches matter to them as well, and without branches nearby, they are more likely to be un- or under-banked.”

A recent survey by Daily Mail found that 51 percent of Americans were either “very concerned” or “somewhat concerned” about the closure of bank branches.

PNC Bank Closure
PNC Bank registered the largest number of closure filings amid its heightened focus on cost-saving measures. During its second-quarter earnings call, CEO William S. Demchak said the bank is “going to have to take a hard look» at where it can «generate savings … without cutting the potential for growth.”

At the time, Chief Financial Officer Robert Q. Reilly revealed that the institution was boosting the target of an expense reduction program by $50 million to $450 million. For next year, PNC Bank is targeting $725 million in expense cuts.

PNC is the sixth-largest U.S. bank. The 19 branches that will be shut down are:

202 N. Walnut St., Bath, Pennsylvania
301 W. Trenton Ave., Morrisville, Pennsylvania
14 N. Main St., Plains, Pennsylvania
1969 E. 3rd St., Williamsport, Pennsylvania
2 N. Mill St., New Castle, Pennsylvania
321 Bel Air Blvd., Mobile, Alabama
2811 Eastern Blvd., Montgomery, Alabama
5650 S. Brainard Avenue, Countryside, Illinois
2217 W. Market St., Bloomington, Illinois
1949 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield, Illinois
505 West Liberty Street, Wauconda, Illinois
8733 U.S. Highway 31 South, Indianapolis, Indiana
528 Station Ave., Hadden Heights, New Jersey
410 Main St., Orange, New Jersey
115 E. Van Buren Ave., Harlingen, Texas
407 S. Commerce St., Harlingen, Texas
801 W. Kearney St., Mesquite, Texas
1040 Mt. Vernon Ave., Columbus, Ohio
1140 N. Main St., Gainesville, Florida
In June, PNC shut 47 branches, followed by 29 closures in August. A spokesperson told The U.S. Sun at the time that the bank intends to shut down 147 locations as it focuses more on online banking. The closures were expected to make 60 percent of PNC’s banking business exclusively online.

A spokesperson from the bank told the Philadelphia Business Journal that the 19 bank closures will take place on Feb. 16.

Last month, the bank reported a drop in third-quarter profits and declared cutting roughly 4 percent of its workforce. The layoffs, which began on Oct. 6, will be completed by the end of the fourth quarter. The job cuts are expected to bring down the bank’s yearly personnel expenses by roughly $325 million or 5 percent.

The bank also forecasts that its net interest income—the difference between the interest it receives on loans and the interest it pays on deposits—will shrink by 1 to 2 percent from current levels in quarter four. During the third quarter, net interest income had declined by 3 percent.

“They (PNC Bank) recognize that there is definitely a headwind to the growth and their net interest income, mainly due to the higher deposit rates and higher funding costs,” Timothy Coffey, an analyst at Janney Montgomery Scott, told Reuters.

“And so they’re trying to alleviate some of that headwind by doing what they can to cut their own non-interest expenses as a way to maintain their earnings.”

War Is Not Abstracted Anymore

You can’t have an up close and personal relationship with the reality of bombs and all the things they do to human flesh and then go back to the way you were ever again. Millions of western eyes have been changed forever.

Pentagon contractor Elon Musk and war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu had a conversation that they broadcast on Twitter during Musk’s apology pilgrimage to Israel in a desperate bid to salvage his public image amid costly accusations of antisemitism.

The “conversation” was really more of a monologue, with the Israeli leader droning on in his conspicuously American accent while Musk meekly agreed with him on every point. During his lecture, Bibi said something worth highlighting while complaining about the worldwide pro-Palestine protests that have been underway since the beginning of Israel’s ongoing Gaza massacre.

“We have mass demonstrations,” Netanyahu said at around the 15:55 mark. “Where were these demonstrations when over a million Arabs and Muslims were killed in Syria, in Yemen, many of them starving to death, those who didn’t die in explosions. Where were the demonstrations in London? In Paris? In San Francisco? In Washington? Where are they?”

“The answer is they don’t care about the Palestinians, they hate Israel,” Netanyahu said. “And they hate Israel because they hate America.”

https://t.co/vJDbprlHhj— Benjamin Netanyahu – בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) November 27, 2023

You hear this “where were the protests over Yemen and Syria?” talking point over and over again from Israel apologists, the argument essentially being that because few people protested the mass killings in those countries then Israel should get to do a little genocide of its own, as a treat.

This talking point is stupid for a few reasons, including the way it tends to avoid the inconvenient fact that the bloodshed in both Yemen and Syria was facilitated by US interventionism, just like the bloodshed in Gaza is. The civil war in Syria was only able to occur because the western alliance and its regional partners flooded the nation with weapons given to extremist factions in the hope of toppling Damascus, and Saudi Arabia’s war crimes in Yemen were fully backed by the US and its allies.

The talking point is also stupid because there are many entirely legitimate reasons the Gaza massacre is getting special attention. In a recent New York Times article titled “Gaza Civilians, Under Israeli Barrage, Are Being Killed at Historic Pace,” Lauren Leatherby explains that Israel’s actions in Gaza are actually quite different from other conflicts this century, killing far more civilians far more rapidly than the wars in places like Syria and Ukraine. Last week the UN’s emergency relief coordinator Martin Griffiths said during a CNN interview that Gaza is the worst humanitarian crisis he’s ever seen, even worse than the Killing Fields in Cambodia. This conflict is being treated differently because it is different.

Another reason this specific bombing campaign is getting so much more public backlash than others is because the pro-Palestine movement has had generations to build, whereas when the west lays waste to a country using military explosives it’s normally a fast ordeal which moves from manufacturing consent to execution very quickly. By the time people figure out they were lied to about the justifications for a depraved war the empire is usually two or three new wars down the track. The Israel-Palestine issue has been just sitting there for decades, so there’s been time to accumulate popular opposition. Once someone learns about the realities of the Palestinian plight they very seldom abandon their support for it, so every newly-opened pair of eyes stays open on this issue for a lifetime.

I keep seeing this fuzzbrained argument. I’ve written more words than almost anyone else in the English-speaking world in opposition to the mass atrocities the US empire has caused in Yemen and Syria, and I write against the US-backed slaughter in Gaza for the exact same reasons. https://t.co/OtiQnZv40h— Caitlin Johnstone (@caitoz) November 12, 2023

But perhaps the dumbest thing about this talking point is the fact that it ultimately works against the agendas of the people saying it. Israel apologists keep asking “Where were the protests over Yemen and Syria,” and gradually the millions of people who are beginning to wake up to the criminality of the US-centralized power alliance as a result of the Gaza massacre are going to start asking themselves the same question.

Because the assault on Gaza is so uniquely horrific and is being broadcast onto people’s social media feeds in real time, millions of people around the world are being snapped out of the propaganda-induced coma that has had them consenting to evil war after evil war over the years. People are starting to realize they’ve been deceived about the Israel-Palestine conflict, and they’re starting to wonder what else they’ve been deceived about. Keep asking them “Where were the protests over Yemen and Syria,” and eventually they’re going to start researching those conflicts and learning about their own government’s role in them, and from there it’s only a matter of time before they start asking, “Hey yeah! Where WERE the protests over Yemen and Syria??”

In a new article for The Guardian titled “The war in Gaza has been an intense lesson in western hypocrisy. It won’t be forgotten,” Nesrine Malik writes that “for the first time that I can think of, western powers are unable to credibly pretend that there is some global system of rules that they uphold. They seem to simply say: there are exceptions, and that’s just the way it is. No, it can’t be explained and yes, it will carry on until it doesn’t at some point, which seems to be when Israeli authorities feel like it.”

‘The lesson from Gaza is brutal and short: human rights are not universal and international law is arbitrarily applied.’ https://t.co/RcGEOp7JP0— Nesrine Malik (@NesrineMalik) November 27, 2023

“Part of that inability to reach for convincing narratives about why so many innocent people must die is that events escalated so quickly,” Malik adds. “There was no time to set the pace of the attacks on Gaza, prepare justifications and hope that eventually, when it was all over, time and short attention spans would cover up the toll. Gaza has been a uniquely, inconveniently, intense conflict… The area is so densely populated that the toll of civilians is too high, and evidence for having undermined Hamas’s capabilities, the only possible justification for the casualties, is too low.”

This is the sort of political moment in which newly-formed critics of the western war machine are being asked to think carefully about why there hasn’t been a robust resistance to their governments’ other criminal actions. Which looks like a nightmare waiting to happen for the propagandists whose job is to manufacture consent for depraved acts of war.

One thing the empire is about to realize is that the western public has lost all its appetite for war. All the careful sanitising, video-gamifying and propagandizing that has been put in place since Vietnam in order to build a platform of consent for “humanitarian” wars has cratered into nothing over the course of mere weeks.

You can’t have an up close and personal relationship with the reality of bombs and all the things they do to human flesh and then go back to the way you were ever again. Millions of western eyes have been changed forever.

“War” is not abstracted any more.

Alastair Crooke : The Magician’s Hat, and the Great Simulacrum of Palliative Balm

By Alastair Crooke

The present hostage exchange is centred on Gaza. However, Israel has three fronts of hot conflict open.

The Magician steps onto the stage, his black cloak swirling about him. Centre stage, he flourishes his hat: It is empty. He punches it lightly to demonstrate its solidity. The Magician then picks up certain objects and places them into his hat. Into it goes AnsarAllah’s seizure of an Israeli-owned vessel (the situation is being ‘monitored’); into it goes the Iraqi strikes on U.S. bases (barely noticed by the main-stream media); into it too go the 1,000 missiles fired into northern Israel by Hizbullah; into it goes the hot war in the West Bank. The Magician turns to the audience – the hat is empty. But the audience knows those objects have a physical reality, but somehow they are magically obfuscated.

It is in this way that the western main-stream media maintains deterrence by playing down the state of war through what Malcom Kyeyune describes as “a simulacrum of peace” – of a gently subsiding conflict and the quieting deployment of (paraphrasing Kyeyune) a very “post-modern question”: What exactly is the meaning of civilian ‘non-combatant’ anyway?

One aspect to the image of easing conflict is the hostage exchange that has been agreed. It is both real, and at the same time it underpins the simulacrum that once Hamas is annihilated, and the hostages released, then the problem of 2.3 million Palestinians can go into the magician’s hat, and be eased from sight. For some, the hope is sincere and well intentioned – that once the fighting ceases, it will stay ceased, and that an end to the bombardment in Gaza might open a window to some political ‘solution’ – if it can be extended sine dei.

‘Solution’ being here but a polite word for the EU’s attempted bribery of Egypt and Jordan. Reportedly, the EU President, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Egypt and Israel to present them with financial offers ($10bn for Egypt and $5bn for Jordan), in exchange for the dispersal of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip elsewhere – effectively to facilitate the evacuation of the Palestinian population from the Strip in line with Israel’s aims of ethnically-cleansing Gaza.

However, former minister Ayalet Shaked’s tweet – “After we turn Khan Yunis into a soccer field, we need to tell the countries that each of them take a quota: We need all 2 million to leave. That’s the solution to Gaza” – is but one by senior Israeli political and security figures extoling what Israel increasingly sees as the “solution” for Gaza.

But by being so explicit, Shaked likely has torpedoed Von der Leyen’s initiative – for no Arab state wants to be complicit in a new Nakba.

Hudna or ‘time out’ inevitably is highly precarious. In the 2014 fighting, when IDF forces initiated military sweeps in Gaza after a ceasefire had begun, it led to a fire-fight and the collapse of the cease-fire. The fighting continued for another full month.

Two key lessons that I learnt from trying to initiate truces on behalf of the EU during the Second Intifada were that a ‘truce is a truce’ and only that – both sides use it to reposition themselves for the next round of fighting. And secondly, that ‘quiet’ in one confined locality does not spread de-escalation to another geographically separate locality; but rather, that one outbreak of egregious violence is virally contagious, and spreads geographically instantly.

The present hostage exchange is centred on Gaza. However, Israel has three fronts of hot conflict open (Gaza, its northern border with Lebanon, and in the West Bank). An incident occurring in any one of the three fronts may be enough to collapse confidence in the Gaza understandings and re-launch Israel’s assault on Gaza.

On the eve of the truce, by way of example, Israeli forces heavily bombed both Syria and Lebanon. Seven Hizbullah fighters were killed.

The point here, plainly said, is that the historical precedents of Hudnas leading to political openings are not that great. A hostage release, per se, resolves nothing. The issue in the present crisis runs far deeper. When, ‘once upon a time’, Britain promised the Jews a homeland, western powers also (in 1947) promised Palestinians a state, but never took it to implementation. This lacuna ultimately is culminating in a head-on train crash.

The Israeli Cabinet’s ambition for a Jewish State on the biblical lands of Israel simply is intended to block any Palestinian State from emerging either in part of Jerusalem, or elsewhere in historic Palestine. In this context, Hamas’ actions were precisely intended to break this impasse and the endless paradigm of fruitless ‘negotiations’.

Unsurprisingly, Israel’s Defence Minister already has announced Israel’s intention to renew fighting immediately after the end of the cease-fire. Israeli officials have been telling their U.S. counterparts that they anticipate several more weeks of operations in the north of the Strip, before shifting focus to the south.

Thus far, the IDF has been operating in areas close to the shoreline in Gaza, and in places, such as the Wadi, south of Gaza City, where the subsoil does not facilitate the building of tunnels. These are the areas, therefore, where Hamas does not have significant defensive capabilities. Should military action be renewed, the IDF is likely to move away from the northern coastline towards the Gaza City epicentre, allowing Hamas to manoeuvre more easily, and inflict greater losses on the IDF and their armoured vehicles. In this sense – away from the simulacra – the war is just beginning.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has been described both in Israel and in the western MSM as a ‘dead man walking’ in political terms. Be that as it may, Netanyahu has his strategy: He has openly defied the Biden Team on every war-related issue, except that of eradicating Hamas.

During a press conference last Sunday, Netanyahu touted a “diplomatic Iron Dome”, saying he would not give in to “increasingly heavy pressure … used against us in recent weeks … I reject these pressures and say to the world: We will continue to fight until victory — until we destroy Hamas and bring our hostages back home”.

Yonatan Freeman, from the Hebrew University, perceives the gambit in Netanyahu’s vague statements: He defies Team Biden, yet takes care to leave sufficient ‘wiggle room’ so that he can always blame Biden, whenever he is ‘forced’ by America into some reversal.

The Israeli Cabinet’s strategy, therefore, rests on the big bet that Israeli public opinion will hold – despite Netayahu’s personal disapproval ratings – due to the overwhelming public support at this point for the two declared objects set by the War Cabinet: Destroying the ‘Hamas regime’ and its capabilities, and the release of all Israeli hostages.

At its core, ‘the bet’ lies in the conviction that public sentiment – contextualised deliberately by the Israeli cabinet in absolute Manichean terms (light versus the dark; civilisation versus barbarism; all Gazans being complicit with ‘Hamas’ evil’) – will ultimately arouse a wave of support for the further move of taking “the fiction” of a Palestinian state off the table “once and for all”. The table is being set for a long war against ‘cosmic evil’.

The ‘solution’, as National Security Minister Smotrich and his allies underline, is to offer Palestinians a choice – ‘to renounce their national aspirations and continue living on their land in an inferior status’, or to emigrate abroad. Put bluntly, the ‘solution’ is the removal of all non-subservient Palestinians from the lands of Greater Israel.

Turning now to the contending perspective:

The ‘united axis’ supporting Palestinians observe that Israel continues to adhere to its initial military goals of destroying Gaza to the point where there is nothing left – no civilian infrastructure at all – by which Gazans might live, were they even to try to return to their collapsed homes.

They see this Israeli objective fully supported by Biden when his spokesman said:

“We believe that they have the right to [embark on further combat operations in Gaza]; but [such actions] … should include greater and enhanced protections for civilian life”.

Regional security commentator, Hasan Illaik, notes,

“Axis officials also believe that conciliatory-sounding U.S. statements, which sometimes suggest that a de-escalation phase is imminent, are nothing but an effort to repair a public image heavily damaged by unstinting U.S. support for Israel’s continuing massacre of Palestinians in Gaza”.

So, is Israel, supported by Team Biden and some EU leaders, winning?

Tom Friedman – an intimate of Team Biden – wrote in the New York Times on 9 November – after traveling around Israel and the West Bank:

“I now understand why so much has changed. It is crystal clear to me that Israel is in real danger — more danger than at any other time since its War of Independence in 1948”.

Far-fetched? Possibly not.

Back in 2012, U.S. author Michael Greer wrote that Israel was founded at a particular propitious time, despite being surrounded by hostile neighbours:

“Several of the major Western powers supported the new state with significant financial and military aid; of at least equal importance, members of the religious community responsible for creating the new state, who remained back in those same Western nations, engaged in vigorous fundraising efforts to support the new state, and equally vigorous political efforts to get existing governmental support maintained or increased. The resources thus made available to the new state gave it a substantial military edge against its hostile neighbours, and its existence became enough of a fait accompli that some of its neighbours backed away from a wholly confrontational stance”.

“Still, the state’s survival depended on three things. The first, and by far the most crucial, was the ongoing flow of support from the Western powers to pay for a military establishment far larger than the economic and natural resources of the territory in question would permit. The second was the continued fragmentation and relative weakness of the surrounding states. The third was the maintenance of internal peace within the state and of collective assent to a clear sense of priorities, so that it could respond with its full force to threats from outside – instead of squandering its limited resources on civil strife or popular projects that contributed nothing to its survival”.

“In the long run, none of these three conditions could be met indefinitely … When it happens that these early patterns of support break down, Israel may find itself backed into a corner”.

Last week, a leading Israeli commentator noted:

“You might think a Presidential visit, presidential speech, three Secretary of State visits, two Secretary of Defence visits, the dispatching of two aircraft carrier groups, a nuclear submarine and Marine expeditionary unit, and the pledge of $14.3 billion in emergency military aid, are testament to the unwavering support the U.S. is extending to Israel” …

“Think again”.

“Underneath the full and robust backing of the Biden administration, there are dangerous and treacherous currents that are chipping away and encroaching on public sympathy for Israel across the United States. Polls released last week contained the most alarming and telling data: Public support for Israel is cratering – particularly amongst the 18 – 34 age group. Another poll shows that 36% of Americans say they oppose additional funding for Ukraine and Israel: Support for funding Israel, only – was at 14%”.

What is truly remarkable is that the leaders of the new narratives are the youth of Generation Z, Y, and Alpha. Leveraging social media, and speaking directly to their peer groups, they have conveyed the grievances of the Palestinians to the world. Many had limited knowledge of Palestine, but their unfiltered sense of justice fuelled their collective anger against Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

Greer’s second and third conditions for Israel’s survival also are metastasizing as the global tectonic plates grind and move: Non-western powers are not siding with Israel. They are coalescing in opposition to the Israeli Cabinet’s aspiration to end the notion of a Palestinian State, once and for all. And today, Israel is bitterly divided on the vision for its future; what it is exactly that constitutes ‘Israel’ and even that very post-modern question, ‘what it is to be Jewish’.

IMPFZWANG, KLIMATERROR, TRANSGENDER: AUF WESSEN SEITE STEHT DIE KATHOLISCHE KIRCHE WIRKLICH?

Stephan Burger (Erzbischof von Freiburg), Heiner Koch (Erzbischof von Berlin) und Georg Bätzing (Vorsitzender der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz) beim Gottesdienst: Quo vadis, Kirche? (Foto:Imago)
