A massive US naval deployment in a wide arc of the so-called Greater Middle East is under way — stretching from Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean, into the Red Sea and the Bab el Mandeb and into the Gulf of Aden and all the way into the Gulf of Oman. This deterrent display may transform as large scale offensive operations and aims to rework the geopolitical alignments and bring them back to the traditional grooves of intra-regional rivalries in the Gulf region.

Ship spotters first said that as of Thursday, the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its escorts were sailing just outside the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman, and were approaching the Persian Gulf. A Pentagon official confirmed the location but would not say whether the carrier will enter the Persian Gulf passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US naval build-up in the region consists of another carrier strike group as well — USS Ford and its escorts — which last week moved away from Israeli coast and is now re-positioned to the south of Crete, according to ship spotters, apparently beyond the missile reach of Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Apart from the two carrier strike groups, the US deployment also includes a three-ship Bataan Amphibious Ready Group with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and several guided-missile destroyers — USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall operating in the northern portion of the Red Sea, and USS Mesa Verde in the Eastern Mediterranean along with the command ship USS Mount Whitney.

You are feted by Washington’s most celebrated and powerful and featured as Time magazine’s Man of the Year. You return home in triumph bearing pledges of tens of billions of dollars in support for your war against a feared and hated invader. But a year later, everything looks a lot different with all the backslappers and glad handers curiously unwilling to get together to talk strategy. You are angry and show it, leaving with little more than a lot of promises that you know to be empty. When you get home, you realize that the end is coming. What a difference a year makes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky!
The decline and fall of Zelensky has been detailed in a lengthy Time magazine article entitled “‘Nobody Believes in Our Victory Like I Do.’ Inside Volodymyr Zelensky’s Struggle to Keep Ukraine in the Fight”, the same journal that was celebrating him over a year ago. The article is extraordinary in terms of what it reveals about the inner workings of the Ukrainian war effort. It was written by Simon Shuster, a Time journalist who covered Zelensky’s visit to Washington and New York in September and then returned with the president back to Ukraine for follow-up interviews and inquiry. Shuster was given extraordinary access both to Zelensky for in depth interviews and to Ukrainian senior officers and other officials and he was able to enter into frank exchanges about what was happening to the country, its army and its government as the war continues well into its second year with winter weather looming and doubts surfacing about NATO and US continuing support for Kiev.
The tale begins with Zelensky’s planned visit to Washington after his stop in New York City to attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. Zelensky’s actual message to the General Assembly was not quite so incendiary and impulsive as some of his other interactions while on his visit, but he offered little new. He reportedly received an obligatory “warm welcome” from those in attendance, but “he delivered his address to a half-full house, with many delegations declining to appear and listen to what he had to say.” He warned those present that “The goal of the present war against Ukraine is to turn our land, our people, our lives, our resources into a weapon against you, against the international rules-based order. We have to stop it. We must act united to defeat the aggressor.” Zelensky did go overboard when he referred to Russia and Russians as “evil” and as “terrorists” and accused them of carrying out a “genocide” against Ukraine.

I have in my possession a message sent by the US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Chas Freeman, to “the men and women of CENTCOM” on February 28, 1991, commending us “for one of the most decisive victories in the annals of warfare.” Ambassador Freeman was referring to Operation Desert Storm, carried out by a US-led coalition against Iraq for the purpose of liberating Kuwait, which Iraq had invaded and occupied in August of 1990. The ambassador noted that while “victories such as this are the very best…they are also the rarest; only the most brilliant warriors produce them.”
According to CENTCOM, I was one of those “brilliant warriors.” They gave me a medal for providing “battle damage assessments that had a direct impact upon the success of Operation Desert Storm,” singling out my role as “primary SCUD missile technical analyst for US CENTCOM and the command’s anti-SCUD program.”
My fitness report defined me as “an outstanding Marine who possesses all the requisite qualities demanded of an officer during war,” who showed “exceptional skill in the development of a CENTCOM program and courses of action to counter the SCUD missile threat” which “resulted in numerous confirmed SCUD kills before they could be launched against Saudi Arabia or Israel.”
The irony of that last statement is manifest, given the fact that during Operation Desert Storm the United States failed to destroy a single Iraqi SCUD launcher, let alone preempt Iraqi SCUD missile launches against either Saudi Arabia or Israel. Indeed, the records show that Iraq fired its last two SCUD missiles at Israel on the night of February 25, followed by a single SCUD missile fired toward Doha, Qatar, in the early morning hours of February 26. The ceasefire ending Operation Desert Storm took effect at 8 am on the morning of February 28.
Ambassador Freeman’s praise was well-deserved on the part of those who had engaged in the business of defeating what he described as Saddam Hussein’s “formidable war machine.”
My war, however, was not a ground war or an air war, but rather a missile war. The survival of the Al Hussein Missile Force made a mockery of any notion of “victory” predicated on the defeat of one’s foe. In short, my “success” in Operation Desert Storm was built on a lie, and while my awards citation and fitness report may not have recorded this uncomfortable truth, it was indelibly printed in my mind.
I also have in my possession a collection of Iraqi artifacts and mementos dating back to Operation Desert Storm and my time as a UN weapons inspector in post-war Iraq, charged with, among other things, accounting for Iraq’s elusive SCUD arsenal. I have assembled them together on my desk, where I can see them every time I take a seat. The collection consists of a medallion in a presentation box, bearing the likeness of Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi President who led Iraq during the war and during my time as an inspector.
Flanking the medallion are two Iraqi military medals, one the Order of Bravery, and the other the Mother of All Battles medal.
Nestled in the presentation box, along with the medallion, are four Chinese-made fuel and oxidizer injectors used in the SCUD engine, and an enameled beret badge of the Iraqi Army.
Each one of these objects has a history which, individually and collectively, serve to comprise what I call my “humility” collection—a constant reminder that while the US-led coalition may have defeated the Iraqi military, the Iraqi missile force was never defeated.
Protestant pastor Ralph Sockman, noted for his televised sermons on NBC in the early 1960’s, famously observed, “True humility is intelligent self-respect which keeps us from too highly or meanly of ourselves. It makes us modest by reminding us how far we have come short of what we can be.”
I make my living as an analyst. For many years I did this as an Officer of Marines, then later as a UN weapons inspector, and for the past two-plus decades as a private citizen. My popularity has ebbed and flowed over time, depending on circumstances at home and abroad. When times are good, I always found the need not to confuse popularity with quality. And when times were bad, I had to make sure that I did not concede matters of quality to gain popularity. The “humility” collection is my constant reminder to myself to help maintain this perspective.
The Saddam Medallion and Iraqi Beret Badge
The Saddam medallion is the touchstone of the collection, a presentation-quality item I purchased at a Souk (market) in Baghdad in the mid-1990’s, when Iraqis of all walks of life were feeling the pinch of economic sanctions and forced to sell off items that once had meaning, but now were being discarded for the sake of survival. Saddam was a dictator who ruled with an iron grip, controlling virtually every aspect of the daily lives of the Iraqi people. At one time medallions such as this were handed out as symbols of appreciation by Iraqi authorities to those who were deemed deserving. I bought it for pennies at a market in Baghdad while Saddam was still in power.
In ancient Rome, victorious generals would parade before the citizens of Rome upon returning from their campaign. While the city was shouting out words of adulation, a prisoner stood behind the general, holding a golden wreath over his head, whispering in his ear, “Remember that you are mortal.”
Saddam, like all of us, was mortal. This medallion serves as a reminder of the fact that even those who have reached unimaginable heights can, in a moment, fall to rock bottom.
Next to the medallion is an enameled badge of the Iraqi Republic worn by an officer in the Iraqi missile force. He gave it to me in December 1991, when I was participating in an inspection of SCUD sites used by Iraq during the war. He was proud of the fact that he and his fellow missilemen had survived the war unscathed, having defeated all efforts to prevent them from doing their job. But, at the end of the inspection, he took his black beret off his head, removed the badge, and handed it to me. “My pride has led me to ignore that fact that your presence in my country is proof we did not win. Let this be a symbol of your victory, and yet a reminder of the price of arrogance.”
Midway during the war, Saddam Hussein summoned the commander of the Iraqi missile force, Hazem Ayubi, and gave him 500 Orders of Bravery to distribute to his men in recognition of their accomplishments in sustaining the launches of SCUD missiles against Israel and Saudi Arabia, despite the concerted efforts of the US-coalition to stop them.
After the war, the men of the Iraqi missile force were all awarded the Mother of all Battles medal in recognition of their victory over the coalition. All 19 of the mobile launchers they possessed when the war began remained operational, and they had launched some 98 missiles against Israeli and Gulf Arab targets.
I was able to purchase these medals from a veteran of the Iraqi missile force. He needed money for his family and came to me because he knew of my affiliation with the counter-SCUD effort. I paid him considerably more money than what he was asking for and promised him that I would treat his medals with the respect they deserved.
I often look at these medals and reflect on the fact that I was decorated for helping kill SCUDs when none had been killed. These were the medals of a hero. An enemy, to be certain. But a hero nonetheless.

In December 1991 I was in Baghdad as part of an inspection team whose remit was to find evidence of an undeclared SCUD missile force. One of the theories at the time was that Iraq had, in addition to purchasing SCUD missiles from the Soviet Union, undertaken an effort to produce an indigenous SCUD missile using imported parts and components. While the inspectors had some vague understanding that this was a possibility, we lacked any information that could back this allegation up.
There was one inspector, however, who did have the requisite knowledge—Dr. Norbert Reinecke, a genuine German rocket scientist. Norbert had been following Iraqi procurement efforts regarding ballistic missiles for years and was intimately familiar with the various companies that Iraq had contracted with regarding the materials needed to assemble an “Iraqi” SCUD missile. Norbert, however, was, at the time of the inspection, unable to share this information due to the fact Germany was preparing to prosecute German companies for their involvement, and the information was protected under German law. However, if Norbert was to come into contact with something related to procurement that touched upon German intelligence, he could share the intelligence in question—so long as there was something physical on the ground that would shield the fact that Germany was in possession of this information.
My job on this inspection was to make sure Norbert gained access to anything and everything that dealt with ballistic missiles.
Midway through an inspection of a site that the UN believed had been used to hide missile components from inspectors, we came across a desk filled with documents. We were on our way to complete the final task of the inspection—investigating the connectivity between the site we were inspecting and a neighboring soccer field. I made the decision to have Norbert remain at the desk in case they found any documents of relevance, and I would proceed to the soccer field.

The soccer field turned out to be of little interest, or so I thought. While inspecting the field, I was surprised to see these little objects scattered about in the grass. I leaned over and picked up a handful of them and examined them carefully.
About that same time, some demonstrators appeared on the scene, a tactic used by the Iraqis to harass us. Concerned that my sub team might get separated from the main inspection body, I declared the inspection over, and casually threw the shiny metal objects back onto the field.
Years later, Norbert and I were walking in a warehouse that had been used by the Iraqis to store missile components. It had been bombed during the war, and bits and pieces of missiles and missile parts were strewn across the floor. I noticed some tiny metallic objects and picked them up. I showed them to Norbert. “These are fuel and oxidizer nozzles,” he said, “used to regulate the spray patter of the fuel and oxidizer in the combustion chamber of the SCUD engine prior to ignition. They are made in China. We’ve been tracking this for years.”
I told Norbert the story about finding these very objects on the soccer field in Baghdad back in December 1991. Later, while questioning Iraqis about how they hid missile parts from the UN weapons inspector, one of the Iraqi engineers admitted that they had evacuated trucks filled with missile components when the inspection team arrived. When the inspection team started driving toward the site next to the soccer field, the Iraqis panicked, and drove the trucks out of the stadium to a new hide site. They had left minutes before our arrival. In the haste of their move, a box containing the Chinese fuel and oxidizer injectors fell onto the field and burst open. There wasn’t time to clean it up, so the Iraqis scattered the nozzles across the field. One of the Iraqis involved was accompanying me in the stadium. He later admitted that the demonstration was designed to distract me. He said his heart nearly stopped beating when I picked up the nozzles, and that he was relieved when I threw them back on the ground.
The discovery of the fuel and oxidizer nozzles was the key to getting the Iraqis to come clean about their ability to manufacture a complete SCUD engine. We made this discovery in 1994. Had Norbert gone to the soccer field in December 1991, he would have known exactly what he was looking at, and the issue of an Iraqi indigenous SCUD engine would have been resolved nearly three years earlier. Had the Iraqis come clean about their missile program in 1991, it may have set in motion events that could have led to the lifting of sanctions, and the prevention of the US-led invasion in 2003.
I look at these nozzles every day to remind myself that I’m not as smart as I think I am, that there is always somebody smarter than me, and that there is always a need to be better.
Ein Panikpapier aus dem Hause Habeck für Kinder ab 8

Es muss nicht immer der Leak eines internen Papiers sein, verfasst im Auftrag eines in vieler Hinsicht gebrechlichen Innenministers und unter Beteiligung eines zweifelhaften China-Experten und Maoisten, namentlich Otto Kölbl (1). Der unter anderem diese Passage des sogenannten Panikpapiers von 2020 verfasst haben will und später damit in den sozialen Medien prahlte (2):
“Kinder werden sich leicht anstecken, selbst bei Ausgangsbeschränkungen, z.B. bei den Nachbarskindern. Wenn sie dann ihre Eltern anstecken und einer davon qualvoll zu Hause stirbt und sie das Gefühl haben, Schuld daran zu sein, weil sie z.B. vergessen haben, sich nach dem Spielen die Hände zu waschen, ist es das Schrecklichste, was ein Kind je erleben kann.“, Otto Kölbl, Panikpapier (3)
Denn auch ganz ohne brisante Geheimpapiere lässt sich „die gewünschte Schockwirkung“ (3) erzielen. Harmlos anmutende Kinderbücher träufeln dem vertrauensseligen Nachwuchs Angst vor dem Ersticken und anderen Dystopien ein. Das Buch „Die besten Weltuntergänge – Was wird aus uns?“, für Kinder ab acht, veröffentlicht 2021 bei Klett Kinderbuch, stammt aus der Feder von Andrea Paluch, der Ehefrau des momentanen grünen Bundeswirtschaftsministers Robert Habeck.
Exakt in der Hochphase der Pandemie auf den Markt gebracht, beginnt dieses Kinderbuch, bestehend aus 12 Weltuntergangsszenarien ausgerechnet mit dem Kapitel „Die Luft wird dünn“. Die Menschen in dieser Episode leben in ständiger Angst, in der sauerstoffarmen Luft zu ersticken in abgeschlossenen Gebäuden, tragen im Freien Atemgeräte und dürfen die Städte nicht verlassen. Wie schade, dass man nun nicht mehr den Wind und die Natur genießen kann. Nur Müllarbeiter dürfen sich außerhalb der Siedlungen frei bewegen, da ihr Job so gefährlich ist. Die Verknüpfung von Müll und Arbeit springt unangenehm ins Auge. Bebildert ist diese Horrorvorstellung in Pastellfarben. Alle Menschen tragen gläserne Helme.
Weiter geht es mit einem dreistöckigen Erziehungsszenario mit Rückgriff auf die gottgesandte Sintflut als Strafe für ein allzu ausschweifendes Leben. „Nach der großen Flut“ ist der Meeresspiegel dramatisch gestiegen. Man lebt dicht gedrängt auf Inseln. Wegen fehlender Anbauflächen sind Möhren und Kartoffeln Delikatessen. Zum Unmut der Kinder gibt es ständig Meeresfrüchte, Fisch und Algensalat wegen der Vitamine.
Wer bis hierher durchgehalten hat, wird in Episode drei mit einem fast rührselig naiven, paradiesischen Kitschszenario belohnt: „Zurück zur Natur“. Die Menschen leben so, wie die Natur es vormacht. So einfältig beginnt dieser dennoch sympathische „Untergang“ einer Welt aus Konsumismus und Raubbau an der Umwelt – Eine heile Kreislaufwirtschaft in rosa Farben, ganz so wie Grüne sie sich erträumen. Bis ins kleinste Detail ist alles gesund, nachhaltig, sauber und in Regenbogenfarben gemalt. Die putzige Utopie endet mit dem pädagogischen Fingerzeig, die Protagonistin Bella habe noch nie Müll produziert und sei schon immer ein Teil des natürlichen Kreislaufs gewesen. Sei wie Bella! Möchte man verzückt ausrufen, produziere keinen Müll! Faktisch produziert jedoch die Industrie das, was später im Müll landet. Diese eigentlich offenkundige Tatsache findet keine Erwähnung. Zu tief sitzt bereits das Narrativ, jeder einzelne würde den Müll „produzieren“. So werden Umweltprobleme von den Verursachern auf die Allgemeinheit abgewälzt, und niemand merkt es mehr.
Es folgt das futuristische technikaffige „Leben im Raumschiff“, auf dem die Erinnerung an die Natur in Filmen wachgehalten wird. Mittels intelligenter Kleidung gibt’s rundum Gesundheitskontrolle und auch anderweitig vollständige Überwachung. Wie Praktisch! Alles ist digitalisiert und gegessen wird selbstverständlich in der veganen Kantine. Sport und Freizeit sind streng geregelt. Es ist zwar schade, dass es keine Natur mehr gibt, aber immerhin sind hier alle gesund und sicher, so könnte die Botschaft lauten.
Weltuntergang Nummer fünf ist die „Stadt ohne Autos“. Ein dörfliches Hippie-Paradies, wo Milch und Honig fließen. Lächelnde Menschen zuckeln mit Handwagen zum Flohmarkt und tauschen liebevoll ihre Habseligkeiten. Nachbarn kochen gemeinsam, Oma gießt Blumen. Liebevoll illustriert mit einer breiten sonnengelben Straße voller Kinder, Hunde, Radfahrer und einem alten VW Bulli. Hach!
Nach diesen Ausflügen in die grüne Phantasiewelt von Frau Paluch und Ehemann Robert warnt das nächste Kapitel vor einer weiteren göttlichen Strafe, dem „Zeitalter der Dürre“, damit die Achtjährigen begreifen, was ihnen blüht, wenn sie sich nicht an die Regeln halten. Die Hälfte der Menschheit ist verdurstet. Mit dem Satz „Afrika ist unbewohnt“ kündigt sich die Bearbeitung des Migrationsthemas an. Und tatsächlich werden in diesem Horrorszenario Flüchtlinge mit Waffengewalt und Zäunen am Einreisen gehindert. Leichen lässt man zur Abschreckung einfach liegen. Erzählt wird eine tribalistische, von Bandengewalt geprägte Welt, ausgedörrt von einer sengenden Sonne, in der um jeden Tropfen Wasser gekämpft werden muss. Immerhin haben die Protagonisten für ihren Brunnen ein Windrad gebaut, selbstverständlich aus recycelten Materialien. Die Illustrationen sind in Ocker und Braun gehalten, Totenschädel liegen herum.
Doch genug der Dystopie. Es wird wieder paradiesisch im Szenario „alle Tiere sind frei“. Und nicht nur das, sie sind auch alle gleich. Allerdings gibt es in dieser Welt nur niedliche Tiere. Wespen, Mücken, Krokodile sucht man vergeblich. Auch in diesem grünen Utopia sind alle gesund, weil sie sich gesund ernähren. Alles ist gerecht verteilt zwischen Menschen und Tieren. Eine Prise CO2-Pädagogik, Veganismus und Sport dürfen nicht fehlen, denn ohne Fleiß kein Preis. Der alte Schlachthof ist nun ein Museum und die glücklichen Kühe scheinen einer Schokoladen-Werbung entsprungen. Illustriert ist dieses Paradies mit Menschen und Tieren beim gemeinsamen Picknick und tatsächlich wäre diese Episode ohne Zeigefinger ein Märchen.
Aber während man noch träumt, mit den niedlichen Ferkelchen aus Episode sieben zu spielen, folgt auf der nächsten Seite bereits die nächste Katastrophe in bedrohlichem Corona-Rot: „Die Virus-Pandemie“ Dieses Szenario beschreibt im Wesentlichen, was bis 2021 bereits passiert war. Flatten the Curve, Lockdown, Verbote, Strafen, Stoffmasken nähen, Tests und Bescheinigungen. Da das Virus in dieser Geschichte von Tieren auf den Menschen übergesprungen ist, lautet die pädagogische Botschaft: Man muss die Lebensräume von Tieren schützen. Das ist ohne Frage korrekt und eine geschickte, manipulative Volte.
Haben wir die Pandemie überstanden, folgt – wie könnte es anders sein? – die „Welt ohne Grenzen“. Geradezu plump mutet die Choreografie an, in der nun das Ergebnis des Great Reset angeteasert wird. Es gibt nur noch eine Welt ohne Staaten, natürlich total gerecht, dafür sorgt die Weltregierung. Überall gibt es alle Hautfarben, Bürgerräte entscheiden gemeinsam, was gebraucht wird. Geld wird gerecht verteilt mittels Weltfinanzausgleich. Kriege und Armeen gehören der Vergangenheit an. Zur Energieversorgung gibt es gigantische Solarparks in der Wüste. Natürlich ernähren die Menschen sich regional aus dem eigenen Garten. Die Weltregierung schenkt jedem eine Reise auf einen anderen Kontinent. Illustriert ist das Kapitel mit einer Weltkarte, Heißluftballons, Schiffen, einigen Flugzeugen und Szenen von glücklichen Menschen, die gemeinsam arbeiten und feiern, „Peace“. Schön.
Das nächste Kapitel reißt die Leser – Kinder ab acht Jahren – jedoch wieder mit aller Brutalität aus der heilen „No Border – No Nation“-Welt und reanimiert die Ozonloch-Katastrophe nicht ohne sie ins Absurde zu überzeichnen: „Wenn ein Sonnenstrahl tötet“. In dieser Welt ganz ohne Ozonschicht, verbrennt die Haut nicht nur beim ersten Sonnenstrahl, sie löst sich sogar auf. Willkommen im Fegefeuer! Menschen dürfen nur noch nachts raus. Bei Sonnenaufgang gellen Sirenen und rufen die Menschen in die verdunkelten Häuser, Lockdown! Wer es nicht schafft, sich in Sicherheit zu bringen, muss qualvoll sterben. So ergeht es euch, liebe Kinder, wenn wir die Klimakatastrophe nicht aufhalten, schreit es plump zwischen den Zeilen hervor.
Aber wenn ihr alle brav seid, liebe Kinder, dürft ihr im nächsten Kapitel ins „Kinderparadies“. Dort habt ihr die gleichen Rechte wie Erwachsene. Ihr dürft ins Bett, wann ihr wollt, und spielen solange ihr wollt. Nichts ist verboten. Geld und Schulpflicht sind abgeschafft. Aber die Schule macht so viel Spaß, dass ihr freiwillig hingeht. Zähne putzen sich von selbst, es gibt ständig Geschenke und aufgeschlagene Knie heilen durch Zauberei. Ihr glaubt, das war’s jetzt? Ihr könnt mit dieser Phantasie ruhig schlafen? Pustekuchen.
Im 12. Kapitel kommt’s richtig dick, denn noch schöner als das Kinderparadies kann nur Eines sein: „Die Erde ohne Menschen“, das letzte Kapitel des Buches und der Menschheit. Die hat sich nämlich selbst abgeschafft, weil sie ihre Lebensgrundlagen zerstört hat. Die Natur hat gesiegt. Sie überwuchert die Reste der Zivilisation. Zootiere leben in Freiheit, sogar die müllfreie Kreislauf-Protagonistin Bella ist nun ein Hund. In den Ruinen turnen Affen herum. Das Leben in der Wildnis ist gefährlich. Immerhin leben Bella und ihre Verwandten in einem solidarischen Familienverbund.
Das Buch endet mit der Binsenweisheit: Die Welt, wie wir sie kennen, wird untergehen. Man mag wünschen, dass auch die an Kinder gerichtete Propaganda irgendwann untergegangen sein wird. Dass kirchliche wie weltliche Pfaffen kein Publikum mehr finden für ihre abgedroschenen Geschichten von Sünde und Strafe, Gut und Böse, Hölle und Paradies, um mit Angstmache die „gewünschte Schockwirkung zu erzielen“ (4). Und dass Erwachsene es nicht zulassen, dass ihre von Pandemiemaßnahmen zermürbten Kinder zu dankbaren Abnehmern ideologischer Angstmache mit pseudoreligiösem Impetus gemacht werden.

So beginnt eine Videobotschaft, die Roger Waters* vor kurzem ins Netz gestellt hat. Er gab ihr den Titel: „To Whom It May Concern: PLEASE STOP!“ Bevor ich mir Rogers fünfminütiges Statement zu den Ereignissen in Gaza anhörte, erschrak ich über sein graues, hager gewordenes Gesicht, in dem sich aller Schmerz der Welt eingenistet zu haben schien. Der Mann war über Nacht um tausend Jahre gealtert. Er schleppte seine Stimme wie eine zerfetzte Scherpe hinter sich her. Von der Vitalität, die seine Reden gegen die Corona-Maßnahmen noch getragen hatte, war nichts mehr zu spüren. Sein Erschöpfungszustand ist authentisch. Millionen Menschen, die dieses Video bisher gesehen haben, dürften sich in ihm wiedererkannt haben. Angesichts des politischen Veitstanzes, der vor unseren Augen so unverblümt aufgeführt wird und angesichts der sich türmenden Leichenberge bei diesem Weltfest des Todes stehen wir ohnmächtig daneben und alle Friedensappelle sind nur noch ein mattes Krächzen. Wir sind heiser geworden, unsere fiebrigen Seelen tragen Trauer und jeder Versuch sich auch nur ansatzweise in das Leid millionenfach zerfetzter Kinderseelen hinein zu fühlen, zerreißt uns.
Kriege fallen nicht vom Himmel, sie werden gemacht. Von Menschen gegen Menschen. Bevor ein Krieg geführt werden kann, muss ein Feindbild kreiert werden. Die Mechanik dabei ist immer dieselbe. Das Gegenüber muss entmenschlicht werden. Warum funktioniert das so reibungslos? Weil wir politische Gefangene sind. In Deutschland ist das besonders auffällig. Deutschland ist ein gefährliches Land geworden, in dem zum Volksverhetzer wird, wer sich gegen Krieg und Gewalt positioniert. Bei uns wird jeder Widerspruch und jedes Aufbegehren zum Anlass genommen, um die Daumenschrauben noch fester anzudrehen. Wie formulierte die prominente Fernsehmoderatorin Dunja Hayali vor kurzem ganz richtig?
„Natürlich gibt es in Deutschland Meinungsfreiheit. Aber man muss auch mit den Konsequenzen rechnen.“
Irgendwann sind wir tatsächlich bei der Allmacht des Staates angelangt.
Man möchte es nicht wahrhaben, man sträubt sich sogar vehement gegen die Erkenntnis, dass dieses Land, dieses Deutschland ein übel riechendes Konstrukt geworden ist. Jedenfalls was seinen Geist angeht. Feige, arrogant und kaltherzig. Als sei es von höherer Macht dazu verdammt, dem wahren Leben fernzubleiben. In seinen teilnahmslosen Augen liegt das Einverständnis einer schrecklichen Solidargemeinschaft. Für all jene, die ihre Sehnsüchte bewahrt haben, denen Friede mehr ist als ein beständiges Zittern vor dem großen Knall, ist die augenblickliche Situation unerträglich geworden. Wie kann es sein, das die Mehrheit unseres Volkes unter der Knute wild gewordener Kriegstreiber begeistert abnickt, dass die Medien ihr propagandistisches Feuerwerk tagtäglich in den Hirnen von Millionen zünden dürfen, ohne dafür von ihren Konsumenten abgestraft zu werden?
Unsere Epoche ist durch und durch pornografisch versifft. Wir müssen den Begriff endlich weiter fassen. Alle Zeitalter hatten pornografische Züge, aber durch und durch? Nein, das bleibt uns vorbehalten. Ob Politik, Wirtschaft, Sport, Unterhaltungs- und Freizeitindustrie, Debattenkultur, Demokratieverständnis, ja selbst große Teile der Kulturszene: hörig, haltlos, brutal, egoistisch, bar jeder Vernunft und bar jedes Wertekanons – pornografisch eben. Und an den Schalthebeln der Macht sitzen Menschen, deren Herz auf die Größe einer vertrockneten Erbse geschrumpft ist. Dem liegt eine Entwicklung zugrunde, die sich in der Menschheitsgeschichte von Anfang an aufgebaut hat und die wie ein reißender Strom über alle humanistischen Ideale hinweg gerauscht ist. An seinen Ufern liegen die Leichen unzähliger Mahnwesen, die der Schlammlawine unserer Zivilisation zum Opfer gefallen sind.
Mir wird speiübel, wenn ich mir das saturierte Grinsen jener frei gewählten Verbrecher an der Spitze unserer Gesellschaft vorstelle, die sich bei jedem ihrer terroristischen Anschläge vor Vergnügen fast in die Hosen machen. Das gilt für die ganze Bagage: für die an den Fäden gieriger Großkonzerne zappelnden Präsidentendarsteller ebenso wie für korrumpierte Wissenschaftler aller Couleur und nicht zuletzt für die arschkriechenden Propagandisten in den Vorstandsetagen und Redaktionsstuben großer Medienhäuser, denen es doch tatsächlich gelungen ist, einen Großteil ihrer GeVolksgenossen wieder kriegsverwendungsfähig zu schreiben. Unter ihrem verheerenden Einfluss sind die Menschen blind geworden für das perfide Spiel der Mächtigen. Die Lügen dieser Bastarde werden den Massen als Manna gereicht.
Schauen wir mit etwas Abstand auf unseren Planeten. Was sehen wir? Wir sehen, dass wir sowohl das Geld als auch die Macht, die medizinischen Mittel, das wissenschaftliches Know-How und genug Liebe zur Verfügung haben, um der Menschheitsfamilie paradiesische Verhältnisse zu bescheren.
„Leider bestimmen die unqualifiziertesten unter uns was läuft,“ schrieb der US-amerikanische Biologe und Bewusstseinsforscher Terrance McKenna (1946 – 2000), „wir werden von den am wenigsten intelligenten, von den am wenigsten edlen Charakteren regiert, die zudem noch ohne jede Vision sind.“
So steht ihrer fürchterlichen Macht unsere furchterregende Ohnmacht gegenüber. Jetzt gilt es, nicht den Verstand zu verlieren. Deshalb ist es dringend notwendig, dass wir uns frei machen von den Narrativen, die der Politik entspringen, schließlich gibt es noch ein Leben außerhalb des politischen Ränkespiels, das unsere Seelen immer mehr zu vergiften droht. Es braucht über den riesigen Misthaufen, den das von Gier gesteuerte System permanent produziert, weder weitere Informationen noch Aufklärung – wir wissen, nach welchen Gesetzen ein menschen- und naturverachtendes System funktioniert. Bleiben wir bei uns, das lohnt sich. Es ist das einzige, was sich noch lohnt. Vor allem dann, wenn wir füreinander in Liebe da sind. Davon haben die seelenlosen Killer und Psychopathen aus Wirtschaft und Politik nämlich nicht die geringste Ahnung. Verschwenden wir unsere Energien nicht in einem aussichtslosen Kampf gegen sie, in dem die Gewalt die einzige Option zu sein scheint. Auf diese Weise werden wir nie gewinnen. Arbeiten wir an uns selbst, seien wir uns wichtig, jeder für sich. Das ist die einzige Chance, die Gesellschaft von Grund auf zu verändern. Eine andere haben wir nicht.
Solange wir unsere wahre Natur verleugnen, solange wir nicht mehr die Sprache des Herzens sprechen und uns stattdessen in mörderischer Konkurrenz gegenseitig die Zeit stehlen, um schließlich als willfährige Erfüllungsgehilfen einer skrupellosen, aber gut organisierten Elite zu enden, werden wir miteinander nie frei sein. Wird sich an dem Höllenritt, der uns vom wahren Leben fortführt, nichts ändern.

Steigende Preise und soziale Probleme entziehen den Menschen Wohnraum und zerstören in den Augen der Migranten den amerikanischen Traum
Die Zahl der Obdachlosen ist in den USA im vergangenen Jahr um einen Rekordwert von 11 % gestiegen. Heute sind es mehr als 577.000 Menschen, was einen Rekord in der gesamten Beobachtungsgeschichte darstellt, schreibt das Wall Street Journal.
Als Hauptgründe für den Anstieg der Obdachlosenzahlen führen Experten die hohen Wohnkosten, den Mangel und die hohen Mietkosten sowie die steigende Zahl von Migranten an. Ein weiterer Faktor war die Reduzierung einer Reihe staatlicher Maßnahmen zur Unterstützung der Bevölkerung während der „Pandemie“.
„Die zur Beseitigung der Folgen des Coronavirus bereitgestellten Mittel dienten als Puffer. Wir sehen jetzt, was passiert, wenn diese Ressourcen nicht mehr verfügbar sind“, sagte die American Coalition for the Homeless.
Nach Angaben der New York Times ist die Zahl der Obdachlosen in den Vereinigten Staaten viel höher und lag im Februar dieses Jahres bei über 582.000 Menschen.
Die Journalisten und Fotografen der Zeitung führten eine Reihe von Razzien in mehreren amerikanischen Städten durch, um die Gründe dafür zu ermitteln, dass die Biden-Regierung ihre Versprechen vom letzten Jahr, die Zahl der Obdachlosen bis 2025 um 25 % zu reduzieren, nicht eingehalten hat.
Ihre Ergebnisse waren enttäuschend.
„Die Gründe, die dazu führen, dass jemand auf der Straße oder in einer Notunterkunft schläft, sind zahllos und komplex. Langfristiger Lohnrückgang. Abgenutztes soziales Sicherheitsnetz. Die Tatsache, dass harte Drogen billig sind, psychische Gesundheitsfürsorge jedoch nicht. Jahr für Jahr stellen wir fest, dass die obdachlose Bevölkerung überproportional schwarz, überproportional alt und krank sowie Mitglieder der LGBTQ-Gemeinschaft ist.“
– schreibt die Veröffentlichung.
Ausschlaggebend sind die hohen Wohnkosten.
„Wohnen ist zu einem Wettbewerb um eine knappe Ressource geworden, und die Schwächsten verlieren“, sagte Gregg Colburn, Professor an der University of Washington und Mitautor von „Homelessness is a Housing Problem“.
Los Angeles wird als „Hauptstadt der Obdachlosigkeit“ bezeichnet. Im Herzen der Stadt, dem 50 Blocks großen Skid Row-Gebiet, leben etwa 3.000 Menschen in Zelten, Hütten und Autos, die die Gehwege so sehr füllen, dass sich der Großteil des Fußgängerverkehrs auf den Straßen abspielt.
„Die Obdachlosenlager in Los Angeles sind einer der dunkelsten Schauplätze Amerikas “, schreibt die New York Times. – Obdachlosigkeit ist Kaliforniens größtes Problem. Eine kürzlich vom Los Angeles Business Council Institute durchgeführte Umfrage ergab, dass die Bewohner darüber verärgert sind, dass die Stadt keine Wirkung zeigt. Viele Wähler sagen, sie fühlen sich unsicher und erwägen einen Umzug.“
Karen Bass, die neue Bürgermeisterin der Stadt, rief an ihrem ersten Tag im Amt den Ausnahmezustand aus. Dies gab ihr erweiterte Befugnisse, um den Bau von bezahlbarem Wohnraum zu beschleunigen.
„Heute wissen wir, dass es am wichtigsten ist, zu verhindern, dass noch mehr Menschen obdachlos werden“, sagt Karen Bass. „Um das Hauptproblem in Los Angeles und anderen US-Städten zusammenzufassen: Obwohl sie Milliarden für neuen Wohnraum ausgeben, werden immer mehr Menschen schneller obdachlos, als diese Programme Menschen helfen können, die bereits auf der Straße sind. Im Durchschnitt haben zwischen 2017 und 2020 jedes Jahr etwa 901.000 Menschen die Obdachlosigkeit verlassen. Diese Zahl wäre eine Riesenleistung, wenn es nicht ein Detail gäbe: Etwa 909.000 Menschen wurden im gleichen Zeitraum jedes Jahr obdachlos.“
Diese Situation trat während der Präsidentschaft von Trump auf und verschärfte sich vor dem Hintergrund der von den Demokraten propagierten „Bidenomics“ noch weiter.
Nicht nur im wohlhabenden Los Angeles gibt es Obdachlosenlager auf den Straßen.
„Daniel Green hätte nie gedacht, dass er in Phoenix obdachlos werden würde, der Stadt, die ihn vor einem Jahrzehnt mit ihren warmen Wintern und billigen Wohnungen von Idaho weggelockt hat. Doch als sein Mietvertrag im Dezember [2022] auslief, erhöhte der Vermieter die monatliche Miete für seine Ein-Zimmer-Wohnung von 700 auf 1.400 Dollar … Mr. Green schläft jetzt im Park …“
„Daniel Green, 54, ist einer von Tausenden neuen Obdachlosen, die aus dem Auspuffrohr des Wirtschaftsmotors Arizonas geworfen wurden, Opfer einer Wirtschaftsexpansion, die neue Fabriken und Hunderttausende neue Bewohner angezogen hat und gleichzeitig die Immobilienpreise in die Höhe getrieben hat.“
Die durchschnittlichen Mieten in Phoenix sind in den letzten fünf Jahren um etwa 70 % gestiegen, und die Zahl der Menschen, die in Notunterkünften oder auf der Straße leben, ist um 60 % gestiegen. Vor zehn Jahren wurden fast 90 Prozent der Wohnungen in der Gegend von Phoenix für 1.000 Dollar oder weniger vermietet. Mittlerweile gibt es nicht mehr als 10 % solcher preiswerten Wohnungen.
Die Obdachlosensituation ist in Städten wie Rockford, Illinois, am besten. „Die Stadt mit 147.000 Einwohnern ist ein Bild des Niedergangs des [industriellen] Rust Belt, mit Problemen, die den wirtschaftlichen Niedergang des Landes verstärken: In den letzten Jahrzehnten sind Arbeitsplätze im verarbeitenden Gewerbe so gut wie verschwunden und durch Arbeitsplätze im Einzelhandel ersetzt worden, wodurch ein … entstanden ist Kreislauf der Armut, Verzweiflung und Kriminalität.
Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten von Rockford gehörten laut Journalisten der New York Times eine verlassene Fabrik, eine vernagelte Schule, leere Straßen und viele leere Gebäude. Der einzige Vorteil für die Bewohner der ehemaligen Industriestadt Rockford ist die günstige Mietwohnung.
Von der Möglichkeit des Erwerbs eines Eigenheims ist keine Rede.
Auch für kinderreiche Familien gibt es keine Ausnahmen. In der kleinen Stadt Kings Mountain in North Carolina lebt die weiße Familie Mills mit drei Kindern seit vielen Monaten in einem Minivan. Beide Ehepartner sind berufstätig, wurden aber nach der Erhöhung der Mietpreise für eine Wohnung vertrieben und haben keine Chance mehr, billigere Wohnungen zu mieten, und alle Obdachlosenunterkünfte sind überfüllt.
Die Situation wird durch den gigantischen Zustrom illegaler Migranten verschärft. Seit letztem August sind 20.700 Migranten aus Texas in Chicago angekommen. „Der Gouverneur von Lone Star State, Greg Abbott, schickt Migranten nach Chicago und in andere demokratisch geführte Städte, weil sie den stolzen Status als „Zufluchtsstädte“ genießen. Sie bieten undokumentierten Migranten einen erhöhten Schutz vor Inhaftierung oder Abschiebung“, schreibt die Daily Mail.
Doch der Mangel an Infrastruktur für Migranten und die Feindseligkeit der Anwohner haben viele, die die beschwerliche Reise über die Grenze zwischen den USA und Mexiko auf sich genommen hatten, gezwungen, umzukehren und nach Hause zurückzukehren.
Der Venezolaner Michael Castejon, 39, und seine Familie schliefen auf dem Boden von Polizeistationen und Notunterkünften, weil sie in Chicago keine Miete zahlen konnten. Laut Castejon hat sich der gescheiterte Versuch, sich in den USA niederzulassen, trotz der extremen Armut, in der sie in Venezuela lebten, nicht gelohnt. Zumindest hatten sie dort ein Dach über dem Kopf.
Nach Monaten des Bettelns um Geld und des Überquerens der Grenzen seien die Träume, von denen er von anderen Migranten gehört hatte, nie in Erfüllung gegangen, sagte er. „Der amerikanische Traum existiert nicht mehr. „Für uns gibt es hier nichts“, sagte er.
Derzeit leben in Chicago etwa 11.000 illegale Einwanderer in Notunterkünften und weitere 4.000 in Polizeistationen oder am Flughafen.
Grâce à l’exploitation des archives disponibles, l’historienne Annie Lacroix-Riz revisite « Les origines du Plan Marshall » (Armand Colin). L’historien Éric Branca salue une avancée pour la connaissance des rapports secrets franco-américains.
À peu près tout le monde en convient : Washington tente de tirer à son profit la guerre russo-ukrainienne – comme avant elle le contentieux nucléaire iranien – pour appauvrir l’Europe dont le PIB, naguère équivalent à celui des États-Unis (autour de 14 000 milliards de dollars en 2008) lui est désormais inférieur de 45 % – 15 000 milliards contre 27 000 milliards de dollars aujourd’hui. Ceux qui y voient, entre autres facteurs, l’effet d’une politique de sanctions pénalisant moins l’adversaire désigné que ceux qui commercent avec lui, n’ont évidemment pas tort. Mais dégainer cette arme fatale n’aurait guère d’utilité sans l’ingénierie politico-juridique qui la rend redoutable et devant laquelle l’Europe baisse les bras : l’extraterritorialité du dollar permettant de favoriser en tous lieux les entreprises américaines et d’affaiblir leurs concurrentes – soit en les frappant d’amendes, soit en s’en emparant, soit les deux (comme ce fut le cas d’Alstom) avec la complicité de dirigeants abouliques… ou intéressés à ces opérations.
Servitude volontaire
Voici pourquoi le dernier livre de l’historienne Annie Lacroix-Riz, Les origines du Plan Marshall, est essentiel à tous ceux qui veulent remonter aux sources de cette servitude volontaire. Sous-titrée « Le mythe de l’aide américaine », cette plongée dans des archives que personne avant elle – à tout le moins en France -, ne s’était donné la peine de consulter, donne doublement le vertige. D’abord parce que cette universitaire au parcours impeccable (normalienne, agrégée, docteur en Histoire, professeur émérite à Paris VII etc.) est justement la seule à s’intéresser, dans le monde académique, à ce dossier fondateur de la libido dominandi américaine, fruit d’un unilatéralisme assumé ; ensuite et surtout parce que cette chercheuse passionnée et passionnante a exhumé des pièces essentielles démontrant combien ce plan, faussement présenté comme une aide décisive au redressement de la « vieille Europe », l’empêcha au contraire de s’ériger en puissance commerciale rivale…
Rappelons le storytelling de ce Plan Marshall qui déversa quelque 16 milliards de dollars (180 milliards de 2023) sur 15 pays non communistes augmentés de la Turquie, entre 1948 et 1952 : une aide « désintéressée » offerte par les États-Unis pour reconstruire le continent à l’abri de la tentation stalinienne.
Ce qu’on sait moins, c’est que cette aide comportait trois conditions préalables, dont les deux dernières spécialement réservées à la France, placée au cœur du dispositif car réputée sensible aux sirènes de Moscou : l’ouverture des marchés coloniaux aux produits américains (en l’échange de quoi, dès les années de guerre, Washington avait financé, à la fois, l’effort de guerre britannique… et accordé son aide au gouvernement de Vichy !) ; le renvoi des ministres communistes du gouvernement Ramadier (chose faite le 5 mai 1947, cinq mois avant la signature de l’accord définitif) ; et l’acceptation d’un addendum culturel à ce volet politique, sous la forme des accords Blum-Byrnes de mai 1946. Lesquels imposèrent à nos cinémas de projeter une majorité de films américains. À savoir 9 productions d’outre-Atlantique importées sans droits de douane pour 4 françaises seulement ! Objectif : acculturer le « gaulois réfractaire » flétri par Emmanuel Macron à l’american Way of Life.
Travail sur archives
Meurtriers pour l’industrie cinématographique française, ces screen quotas jetteront dans la rue – et dans les bras du Parti communiste que ces accords étaient censés combattre ! – beaucoup d’artistes et de salariés des professions du cinéma, les plus célèbres étant alors Yves Montand et Simone Signoret, Gérard Philippe… Et même le réalisateur Claude Autant-Lara qui, c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire, n’était pas de gauche, et adhéra pour le coup à la CGT !
Mais ce que nous apprend Annie Lacroix-Riz, grâce à sa connaissance exceptionnelle des archives disponibles et à ses travaux antérieurs sur le rôle des grands décideurs économiques et financiers français sous l’Occupation (voir en particulier Les élites françaises entre 1940 et 1944, de la collaboration avec l’Allemagne à l’alliance américaine, Armand Colin, 2016, ou encore La non-épuration en France, de 1943 aux années 1950, Armand Colin, 2019, et Dunod Poche, 2023), c’est que rien de tout cela n’aurait été possible sans le recyclage par le libérateur américain… des principales figures de la collaboration économique avec les nazis !
Exemple parmi d’autres : l’emblématique Jacques Lemaigre-Dubreuil (1894-1955), passé sans transition du statut d’huissier des intérêts allemands en France à celui de facilitateur de l’entrée en force de la finance américaine dans le capitalisme hexagonal. Président des huiles Lesieur, administrateur, entre autres, de la Banque Worms et de la Royal Dutch, membre influent du Comité des forges par l’intermédiaire duquel, avant-guerre, il finançait les ligues d’extrême-droite, ce personnage a joué un rôle important après la défaite en servant d’intermédiaire aux Allemands pour leurs achats en Afrique du Nord et de l’Ouest.Mais après Stalingrad (février 1943), il doute de la victoire du Reich et, tout en continuant à vendre son huile à la Wehrmacht (et on s’en doute, pas seulement de l’huile de table !), il se propose d’aider les Américains à trouver l’homme providentiel pour faire en sorte que la libération de la France ne coïncide pas avec une révolution communiste dont de Gaulle, selon lui, serait le fourrier. Cet homme sera le général Giraud. Celui-ci renvoyé au néant par sa propre vacuité, Lemaigre-Dubreuil se concentrera sur l’essentiel à ses yeux, aidé en cela par les inspecteurs des finances Jacques Barnaud et Jacques Guérard, tous deux associés chez Worms : permettre aux États-Unis de prendre pied dans les grandes affaires françaises en s’inspirant des modèles juridiques utilisés par les Allemands, en 1940, pour coloniser notre économie. Afin que les bénéficiaires de l’opération n’apparaissent pas, Lemaigre-Dubreuil avait alors proposé à Dulles de passer par l’intermédiaire des banques espagnoles qui auraient acheté des titres de ces entreprises au nom de clients anonymes !
Le véritable objectif américain
Mais ce qu’on apprend aussi et surtout, c’est que l’objectif originel du Plan Marshall – parfaitement rempli, qu’on se rassure ! – était moins d’aider l’Europe que de sauver l’Amérique de la récession. Annie Lacroix-Riz cite ainsi un incroyable document de cadrage en date du 21 février 1946, rédigé par le secrétaire américain au Trésor, Fred Vinson, définissant « la politique des prêts à l’étranger des États-Unis ».
« Le programme de prêt subordonné à la surproduction américaine, bénéficiera à notre économie intérieure, écrit-il. Dans la transition de la guerre à la paix, le développement du commerce extérieur devra résoudre le problème de la reconversion d’un grand nombre des industries intérieures. Pendant la guerre, beaucoup de nos industries importantes, en particulier dans le domaine des biens d’équipement, ont atteint des capacités de production très excédentaires par rapport à la demande intérieure prévisible du temps de paix. Avec l’élimination de la demande liée à la guerre, une grande partie des capacités de production américaines risque d’être inutilisée, par exemple dans l’équipement ferroviaire, les machines-outils, la production et le transport d’énergie et certaines catégories de matériaux industriels, certains métaux, la chimie lourde, le caoutchouc synthétique et d’autres matériaux industriels. De même, une grande partie du coton, du tabac et d’autres produits agricoles [ … ] dépasse les besoins intérieurs. Il est heureux que cette capacité productive excédentaire corresponde le plus souvent aux produits dont les pays dévastés par la guerre ont le plus urgent besoin ».
Système « gagnant/gagnant », comme on dirait aujourd’hui ? Ce serait oublier, par exemple, que dans le même document, Vinson interdit aux États bénéficiant de l’aide américaine d’utiliser leur flotte marchande pour transporter le moindre produit américain ! « Un coup mortel porté aux nations maritimes, dont les États-Unis avaient décidé d’écarter la concurrence pour maintenir leur‘‘libre’’ suprématie de guerre » résume Annie Lacroix-Riz…
Surtout, le Plan Marshall, une fois mis en place, organise un système de contrôle sans précédent des économies, et spécialement de la française, via un organisme spécialement créé : l’European Cooperation Administration, ou ECA, dont la présidence échoit à Paul Hoffmann, administrateur en chef de la toute-puissante Fondation Ford. Une tutelle à laquelle rien ne doit échapper mais qui ne choque personne pour la bonne raison que le grand public en ignore l’existence, bien que son antenne parisienne soit hébergée au château de la Muette, siège de l’OECE (Organisation européenne de coopération économique)qui deviendra en 1961 l’actuelle OCDE…
L’oncle Sam veille
Des programmes d’importations aux chiffres actualisés de la production industrielle, des rentrées fiscales aux dépenses sociales, en passant par le nombre de chasseurs en France et celui des pensionnés militaires, rien n’échappe alors à son contrôle. Surtout, l’ECA veille à ce que la France importe sans droits de douane des contingents fixes de produits américains, ne les réexporte pas, et se fournisse dans des pays recommandés par les États-Unis. Lesquels n’en continuent pas moins à taxer les produits français quand ils concurrencent la production made in USA ! Pour les États-Unis, reconstruire l’économie française est donc une priorité… mais à condition qu’elle devienne d’abord un client, et non un concurrent ! Pour formater les esprits, l’ECA organise d’autre part force stages aux États-Unis afin de convertir le patronat aux méthodes américaines de production et de management, tandis que l’accueil d’experts américains dans les entreprises françaises est fortement recommandé. En matière agricole, le remembrement des terres est pareillement encouragé afin de rendre l’espace rural français accessible aux tracteurs américains !
Ce contrôle prend un tour tellement agressif qu’en novembre 1948, le directeur des carburants, Pierre Guillaumat (que de Gaulle, revenu au pouvoir, nommera président d’EDF, parallèlement à ses responsabilités au Commissariat à l’énergie atomique), envoie une note secrète à la présidence du Conseil pour s’alarmer des « dangers incontestables que pourrait présenter pour notre économie une connaissance trop parfaite par les services et les industriels américains de nos procédés, de nos programmes et de nos débouchés commerciaux ».
Quand, en 2016, Airbus a été visé par une plainte pour corruption du Département de la Justice américain après que l’entreprise européenne, se soit dénoncée elle-même par souci de « compliance » – une initiative de Tom Enders, alors patron (allemand) du consortium aéronautique européen -, l’entreprise fut sommée de se soumettre à l’audit de superviseurs américains auxquels aucune porte n’a été fermée, ni aucun secret celé… (Voir absolument sur ce sujet le documentaire La bataille d’airbus, d’Alexandre Leraître et David Gendreau, diffusée par Arte en 2023). Certes, le Plan Marshall et son bras séculier, l’ECA, n’existent plus depuis 70 ans. Mais la contribution d’Annie Lacroix-Riz à la connaissance des rapports secrets franco-américains reste, elle, d’une brûlante actualité !

The truth is that today we are chanting “in our thousands, in our millions we are all Palestinians”, but in fact we are not there. We do not live in a Gaza that is being murdered, bombed and wiped out. The foreign, occupying state does not cut off the light and water in our homes, we do not need a passport to go to work, and on the way to our workplaces, no one will search us, spit on us, insult us, beat us, arrest us or shoot us.
Zionism as a Variant of Nazism
Not yet, because in reality Nazism and fascism are not some pathologies of liberalism, some bad response to it. While the Zionism is only a variant of Nazism, the Nazi state is directly a defensive stage of capitalism, recalled when it moves closer to another inevitable crisis. This is a straight line, even if we don’t see it now: populism, limiting workers’ and trade union rights, stigmatising entire groups of citizens, e.g. migrants, chauvinism, jingoism, then authoritarianism, fascism and war, endless war, above all, against civilians, against the innocent, there are all just methods of maximising capitalist profits. The war in Palestine, a war that has been going on since 1948, is just an element of the escalatory strategy of global capitalism, which once again distracts attention from its own internal problems by multiplying fronts. In this sense, Israel is at the forefront of what is the worst and most destructive in the current global system. The struggle of the Palestinian people is therefore our common struggle, so even though we are not in Gaza, we all can and should feel Palestinians today!
British Responsibility
Zionist aggression is also a matter of special responsibility of British policy. Meeting almost on the anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration, we must make it clear that without the British influence there would be no permanent crisis in the Middle East, no Nakba, no wars and no Palestinian genocide. It was Lord Palmerston who announced an intention to create the newZion in 1840, of course as a place and organisation helping to spread the interests of the British Empire and, of course, without asking the opinion of European Jews themselves whether they wanted to act as agents of British imperialism at all.
At the end the Great War British administration, army and intelligence did not hesitate to betray their Arab allies who were crucial for the British victory over Turkey in the Middle East. The new colonial division of Palestine, Transjordan, Iraqi and Syria contributed significantly to the beginning of the Zionist colonisation of these areas, and Israel itself was created as an Anglo-Saxon sphere of influence, thanks to which it would become possible to divide and conquer again, to provoke and quarrel Jews and Arabs who had previously lived in peace for the centuries. It was the British Empire that sowed the seeds of hatred, the poisonous fruits of which continue to grow to this day.
Labour Under the Nazi Flags
Nevertheless the poison works both ways. As a result of the war in Palestine and Zionist aggression, British politics is also poisoned. Under the banner of ‘fighting against the Antisemitism’, freedom of speech and scholar debate are being restricted in the UK. The Labour Party has become not only a party of war, but also a party of militant Zionism, which leads it to continuing disintegration. Under Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, Labour first replaced red banners with blue ones, then with blue and yellow Ukrainian ones (possibly with the Nazi Wolfsangel, which we have seen so many times in Whitehall), and now shamelessly raises Zionist blue star flags, the same ones under which Netanyahu’s butchers are murdering civilians in Gaza. The Labour Party’s support first for Ukrainian Nazism and now for Zionism is a disgrace and shame for all people with the progressive, internationalist sensibility. So, what if the discredited Tories finally give up power when the same murderous lovers come in their place?
Konzentrationslager Gaza
The influential American journalist, Ann Applebaum wrote a few years ago that it is in the Anglo-Saxon interest to create and support ‘even extreme, but after all fine nationalism in Ukraine’. We all know how this specific kind of ‘fine extreme pro-Western nationalism’ is called: NAZISM. Until recently, we also heard a lot that a ‘positive Zionism’ is also possible, one that would find a way to a peaceful agreement with the Palestinians. Today we should understand that there is no such option, and Israel is not only a criminal state, but also an increasingly authoritarian one.
We have all surely seen films documenting the brutality of the Israeli police and army against Orthodox Jews protesting against the government’s policies. We often hear that ‘Israel is a bastion of democracy and Western tolerance in the Middle East’. Today it is no longer possible to hide the truth. Zionist Israel is an Apartheid, Nazi state and Gaza is a modern-day extermination camp. I am Polish, I was born and lived for many years in Lublin, the city where during the World War 2 was located Konzentrationslager Majdanek, the second largest German Nazi extermination camp, so I can recognise a Holocaust when I see it. And in Palestine I see the Holocaust of the Palestinians.
During the WW2 the UK could have bombed the railways to Auschwitz, Majdanek and other death camps, it could have done much more to stop and prevent the Shoah, which the Polish resistance reported to no avail. The UK (nor the USA) did nothing. And now it is much worse, the UK and NATO not only fail to prevent the Holocaust of the Palestinians but are also responsible for complicity in the genocide. It is a crime against humanity, but it is even more than that, it is a deadly mistake which leads the entire world another step closer to World War 3.
That is why we must say no to war, no to NATO and Anglo-Saxon imperialism, no to Nazism and no to Zionism.
Palestine will be free for the world to survive!

In the last 50 years there have been two major threats to life on our planet.
The first, the nuclear arms race and its near disaster of 1962, was narrowly averted by President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy, who then set a course for peace.
The second, the ticking climate bomb on its short “business as usual” fuse, has no solution in sight. (PART II of this essay forthcoming)
In both cases unseen forces have blocked a survival response to incalculable danger. We will examine these forces and suggest a way forward, modeled partially on action taken by JFK to avert nuclear war.

I. Introduction
Most people under 60 will not remember the harrowing Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, when the world was brought to the brink of nuclear war. With the US leading the long-range missile race, short-range Soviet missiles had been quietly installed in Cuba. Tension ignited when a US reconnaissance pilot was shot down over Cuba and killed. Kennedy, opposed to a war with Cuba, feared that his generals would overthrow him and escalate the crisis to a nuclear war that they believed to be winnable.
In desperation Kennedy turned to urgent, secret negotiations with his Cold War enemy, Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Disaster was narrowly averted through the vital historical meeting of October 27.[1]
Horrified by the event and under pressure from senior advisors to pursue a first-strike capability,[2] Kennedy made a decisive turn towards peace. He began urging the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and withdrawal from Viet Nam.
In June, 1963 he made an impassioned plea at the American University to make peace with the Soviets: “If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. In the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s futures. And we are all mortal.”[3]
But he would not be long for this world, for he had bitterly alienated the hawks who placed “winning the Cold War” above the life of a President.

JFK’s November, 1963 assassination unleashed nuclear roulette[4] to swagger and bluff its way into the eighties, obstructing his vision for peace while the planet hung in the balance.
Now, 50 years later, we again face a global precipice that cries out for decisive action. A radical transition to green energy must begin immediately to avert an unstoppable slow-motion disaster.
Again hidden forces have been obstructing a response. Since the Rio Summit in 1992, CO2 levels have spiked towards disaster while the media have remained fixated on pipeline and tanker routes.
Where is the human outcry for earth’s life-support? Why have we failed to seize control of our survival?
Trappist monk Thomas Merton figured it out in the sixties. He coined the term “the unspeakable” during the nuclear madness of the Cold War, to describe a vacuum that can be utterly void of compassion and responsibility.[5]
This systemic moral abyss covertly carries out CIA assassinations and the overthrow of foreign governments while protecting senior officials from knowing too much, under the doctrine of “plausible deniability.”
In failing to acknowledge and confront the under-side of the state we have allowed the abyss to grow, as it did in Hitler’s Germany.
Following JFK’s murder came the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, neither of whom, we now know, were murdered by lone gunmen.
Each of these men looked into the void and confronted the unspeakable in the name of peace and justice. Each paid the final price.
To learn from history, and to be worthy of their sacrifices, we need to “go there” too.

Widespread suspicion that JFK was killed by elements within his own government, most particularly the CIA, has long been fostered by films such as Oliver Stone’s 1991 JFK.
In 2009, Stone reviewed the extraordinary book JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why it Matters:[6]“It is the best account I have read of this tragedy and its significance. It is a book that deserves the attention of all Americans; it is one of those rare books that, by helping us understand our history, has the power to change it.”[7]
On January 11, 2013, Robert Kennedy Jr. told Charlie Rose in front of a large Dallas audience that his father, Robert F. Kennedy (brother to JFK), privately believed the Warren Commission was “a shoddy piece of craftsmanship,” and that “the evidence at this point I think is very, very convincing that it was not a lone gunman.”[8]
Kennedy said his father had “asked Justice Department investigators to informally look into allegations that the accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, had received aid from the Mafia, the CIA or other organizations. He said the staff members found phone lists linking Jack Ruby, Oswald’s assassin, to organized crime figures with ties to the CIA, convincing the elder Kennedy that there was something to the allegations.”[9] Kennedy also praised the scholarship of JFK and the Unspeakable.
The Rose interview was taped but not broadcast by the media, which evidently does not “go there.”
One man who “went there” in the sixties was the young award-winning Dallas Deputy Sheriff, Roger Dean Craig, who was on duty when JFK was killed. Craig, in a virtually unknown interview following several attempts on his life, spoke clearly about his orders that morning to watch but not offer security to the JFK motorcade. Though Kennedy had been promised the greatest police protection ever provided to a President, Craig reported surprisingly few Dallas police: none riding beside the limousine, and none sitting on the trunk to shield him.[10] The rifle Craig and other officers examined in the Texas School Depository did not match the three spent cartridges. Craig’s clear testimony and the tragic story of his ensuing destruction is available online.[11]
A February 25, 2013 news story reports that Robert J. Groden, best-selling New York Times author and forensic photographic consultant to the 1978 House Select Committee on Assassinations, has been arrested or ticketed 81 times in Dallas for lecturing at the site of JFK’s assassination. Each time he was legally exonerated.[12] Groden, consultant to Oliver Stone’s film JFK, has written six books disproving the lone gunman evidence, and produced the virtually unknown 1993 documentary, JFK: The Case for Conspiracy.[13]
A 2011 study tells of a witness who went into hiding for decades after testifying to the Warren Commission that she was on the Depository stairs and did not see Lee Harvey Oswald at the official time he was reported to have fled. She later found that her testimony to the Commission had been revised.[14]
Much is being done to expose the real murder of JFK. Now, at the 50th anniversary of his death, with 1,100 JFK assassination records still under wraps (in violation of the 1992 JFK Assassination Records Act), the Mary Ferrell Foundation and JFK Facts offer news and archives about the Kennedy assassination.[15]
Dr. Martin Luther King

American civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was shot on the second-floor balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
Like Kennedy, King had launched a non-violent campaign against the Vietnam war, based on his horror of the unspeakable brutality the Vietnamese children suffered from napalm.
An August, 1963 FBI memo had described King as “the most dangerous Negro of the future in this Nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro and national security.”[16] He was arrested 29 times and his home was bombed.
King’s alleged assassin, James Earl Ray, had long been denied a criminal trial in spite of repeated efforts by the Martin Luther King family. In 1999 the King family commissioned attorney William F. Pepper to pursue a civil wrongful death suit on behalf of Ray, who had died in1998. The case, which called 70 witnesses, was tried in Memphis Circuit Court before Judge James E. Swearengen. After 30 days of hearing evidence that had never been presented in a court of law, the jury exonerated Ray in a victory for the King family. The 12-person jury instead found a murder conspiracy involving agents of the government of the United States, State of Tennessee, and the City of Memphis.[17]
Only one reporter — Wendell Stacy from Memphis ABC News — covered the trial in depth. He was fired and suffered attempts on his life.[18] The massive evidence and verdict for this trial were thus buried by the US media, stunting history and killing hope.

Just after midnight on June 5, 1968, RFK was shot three times while leaving the stage of the Ambassador Hotel ballroom in Los Angeles. He had been celebrating his win of the California democratic primary election the day before.
Of the three alleged lone-gunman assassins, Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan’s role is the most doubtful.
Most eye witnesses reported long ago that Sirhan was facing Kennedy as he walked off-stage into the pantry. However, the autopsy showed that the bullets entered Kennedy’s body from behind and to the right.[19] Coroner Noguchi estimated that the lethal shot to the back of his neck was fired from no more than 1.5 inches, and left thick powder burns.[20] The final Coroner’s report described embedded “dark brown to black powder residues in the neck injury.[21]
Eye-witnesses have also long reported more shots than Sirhan’s 8-bullet pistol could hold. John Pilger, twice Britain’s “Journalist of the Year”, was following Kennedy into the kitchen and reported shots after Sirhan was restrained, confirming, in a 2008 interview, “there was another assassin or another several assassins.”[22]
There was no camera footage of the shooting. However in 2004, the long-archived “Pruszynski Tape” was found in the California State Archives by American journalist Brad Johnson, a senior CNN news writer.[23] This audio recording was judged authentic by forensic analyst of magnetic recordings, Phillip van Praag, whose oscillogram showed 13 shots, including two double shots fired back to back.[24] Two sets of shots with different megahertz patterns were fired from opposite directions.[25]
In 2012 a key witness to the murder went public. Nina Rhodes-Hughes, a fund-raiser for RFK, walked 6-7 feet behind him as he left the stage. She heard shots from in front of RFK, and then from her right. She later learned that the FBI had changed her testimony to say that she had heard 8 shots, which she “never, never said…there were at least 12, maybe 14.” Her statements were reported by CNN, Huffington Post, and other major news outlets last year.[26] They exactly mirror accounts of several other witnesses.[27]
Concluding Remarks
Fifty years of research shows that three humane visions of global peace were thwarted by three covert assassinations.
In each case eyewitness accounts were written out of history. In each case the “lone gunman” fiction denied society a true understanding of the deep politics of history.[28] In each case propaganda masked truth and undermined the public good.

As Israel continues to fight a war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza that is killing thousands of civilians, they are drawing criticism and condemnation from around the world.
While their stated goal of eradicating the terrorists who brutally massacred more than a thousand Israelis and took hundreds of people hostage may have seemed reasonable initially, it quickly became apparent that they cannot meet this goal without causing undue harm to civilians. So why are they continuing? There is some speculation that their interest in building an alternative to the Suez Canal might be an underlying motivation.
Israel has been discussing plans to build a Suez Canal rival with the U.S. since the 1960s. The Suez Canal is a very lucrative trade route for Egypt, and with 20 percent of all world trade currently passing through it, there is a big opportunity there – especially when you consider the fact that many Western nations would prefer not to depend on Egypt for world trade given its close ties to Russia.
The proposed Israeli canal, which was dubbed the Ben Gurion Canal Project, would start near the port city of Eilat on the Gulf of Aqaba close to the Israel-Jordan border and flow through the Arabah Valley and the Dead Sea before then moving north around the Gaza Strip to ultimately connect the Gulf of Aqaba with the Mediterranean Sea. Cutting through the Gaza Strip would be a more direct route.
According to declassified documents from July of 1963, the U.S. Department of Energy helped create a plan to detonate hundreds of nuclear explosions under the ground of the Negev Desert to make the canal possible. The document noted: “Such a canal would be a strategically valuable alternate to the present Suez Canal and would probably contribute greatly to the economic development of the surrounding area.”
While 130 miles of the proposed 160-mile canal were situated in what was then “virtually unpopulated desert wasteland,” the main obstacle to the plan would be relocating people living in the Gaza Strip. The document points out: “Another problem which has not been considered is that of political feasibility, as it is likely that the Arab countries surrounding Israel would object strongly to the construction of such a canal.”
A canal would make Israel a key player in maritime commerce
If the new canal does proceed, it will be about a third longer than the Suez Canal but could handle more traffic. The parties that control the canal will have an outsized influence on the global supply routes of grain, oil and shipping. With Gaza out of the way, the canal could be created with ease and diversions would not be needed.
There’s also, not surprisingly, a lot of money at stake. The Suez Canal recently set a new record for annual revenue of $9.4 billion for Egypt, and the new canal would be designed to be more efficient and accommodate a higher volume of ships thanks to its hardier terrain than the Suez Canal’s sand. It would also allow two-way traffic, meaning ships could pass in both directions at the same time.
The canal would position Israel as a key player in global maritime commerce, and some believe that it would be in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s best interests to pursue it as he faces dwindling public support in Israel. The fact that Egypt – and by extension, Russia – would exert far less control over world trade makes it an attractive prospect to many other countries as well. What is happening in Gaza is so hard for many of us to comprehend, but when you follow the money, it becomes clear that there is a lot more to the story.
