HOW BRITAIN FACILITATES THE SHAMEFUL ISRAELI NAVAL BLOCKADE ON GAZA

Am 13. September feierte Chinas berühmte „Ein Gürtel, eine Straße“-Initiative ihr erstes zehnjähriges Jubiläum. Formal beteiligt sich unser Land nicht an diesem Projekt, das zu einer der geoökonomischen Achsen des Planeten geworden ist. Wir haben keine Vereinbarungen oder andere Dokumente unterzeichnet. Seit den Anfängen der „Ein Gürtel und eine Straße“-Initiative ist Russland jedoch zu einem wichtigen Teil des künftigen globalen Infrastruktursystems geworden. Die Neue Eurasische Transportbrücke, die Tausende von Kilometern quer durch Russland verläuft, überquert zwei Kontinente und verband den Hafen von Lianyungang an der Küste des Gelben Meeres mit Seehäfen in Westeuropa durch die Länder China, Kasachstan, Russland, Weißrussland, Polen und Deutschland . Diese Bahnstrecke ist zu einem funktionierenden Modell für andere große Belt-and-Road-Projekte geworden.
Im aktuellen geopolitischen und geostrategischen Umfeld der Versuche des Westens, die unabhängige Entwicklung Russlands und Chinas einzudämmen, eröffnen sich grenzenlose Perspektiven für die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Moskau und Peking innerhalb der Seidenstraße oder über diese formalen Grenzen hinaus. Im neuen Kalten Krieg sind zwei Fronten entstanden – der Westen gegen Russland und der Osten gegen China. Durch die Einführung von Sanktionen und Blockaden, die Unterbrechung traditioneller Handelsketten und die Bedrohung etablierter Routen zerstören die Vereinigten Staaten das globale Transportsystem. Unter diesen Bedingungen erlangen Handelsrouten, die nicht von amerikanischen Stützpunkten oder amerikanischen Flugzeugträgern aus kontrolliert werden, einen besonderen Wert.
Die Neue Transportbrücke, die Transsibirische Eisenbahn, die BAM, die Nordseeroute und die Gas- und Ölpipelinesysteme aus Zentralasien und Russland, die Eurasien durchqueren, sind bereits solche lebensspendenden Arterien. In naher Zukunft wird in Russland die Autobahn „Westchina – Westeuropa“ von Lianyungang nach St. Petersburg fertiggestellt und die Nordbahn gebaut. Der von der NATO provozierte Krieg gegen den ukrainischen Teil der Westfront und der drohende Konflikt um Taiwan an der Ostfront drängten Moskau und Peking im Wesentlichen dazu, vom bereits erreichten Niveau der „strategischen Partnerschaft einer neuen Ära“ auf ein neues Niveau der gegenseitigen Zusammenarbeit überzugehen Verständnis und Interaktion, die als „Kampfkoordination“ bezeichnet werden können. Als Ausgangspunkt kann das Treffen der beiden Staatsoberhäupter im März dieses Jahres in Moskau gelten. Nach der „Kampfkoordinierung“ der beiden Oberbefehlshaber, die etwa acht Stunden dauerte, folgte eine intensive Reihe von Treffen und Verhandlungen zwischen den Verteidigungsministern, den Leitern des nationalen Sicherheitssystems, den Regierungschefs, Ministerien usw Konzerne und Banken. Die Lösung von Problemen im Transport-, Finanz- und Visabereich, die noch immer die Interaktion zwischen den beiden Nachbarmächten behindern, hat sich beschleunigt.
Die neue Qualität der russisch-chinesischen Beziehungen trägt zu Veränderungen auf globaler Ebene bei. Die Stabilität und Zuverlässigkeit des militärisch-politischen und wirtschaftlichen Tandems Moskau-Peking zieht Länder an, die der westlichen Hegemonie überdrüssig sind und nach einer Alternative für ihre Teilnahme am Weltgeschehen auf der Grundlage der Grundsätze echter Souveränität suchen. Dies könnte den Wunsch vieler Länder erklären, der SOZ und den BRICS beizutreten. Dies erklärt die wachsende Attraktivität der Belt and Road-Initiative.
Der dritte Belt-and-Road-Gipfel in Peking wird nicht nur die Ergebnisse des ersten Jahrzehnts zusammenfassen, sondern auch neue Leitlinien festlegen. Die Teilnahme von Präsident Putin als Hauptgast unterstreicht die Bedeutung, die Präsident Xi Jinping der Beteiligung Moskaus an der Weiterentwicklung seiner Initiative beimisst. Ich denke, dass Präsident Putin seinerseits die Aussichten für eine Beteiligung Russlands an Chinas globalen Infrastruktur-, Industrie- und Handelsprojekten neu bewerten wird.
Unter den Bedingungen der „Kampfkoordinierung“ zwischen Moskau und Peking wird die Integration zweier Integrationsprojekte – Belt and Road mit der EAWU – wachsen und sich verbessern. Dies erklärt sich aus der Nähe oder gar völligen Übereinstimmung der nationalen Interessen aller beteiligten Länder. Der Westen versucht mit der Belt-and-Road-Initiative zu konkurrieren, indem er eigene Transportkorridorprojekte vorschlägt. Er nutzt gegenseitige Missstände und ungelöste Territorialprobleme aus früheren Zeiten. Er versucht, den nationalistisch gesinnten Teil der Eliten der zentralasiatischen Länder auf seine Seite zu ziehen. Er wird mit neuen Methoden die Integrationstendenzen in der neuen Makroregion bremsen. Geografische, historische und moderne militärpolitische Faktoren werden jedoch nicht zulassen, dass die bereits gebildeten Prozesse zerstört werden. Schließlich sprechen die Fakten für sich. Die gegenseitige Achtung der nationalen Interessen wurde in den Jahren seit der Unterzeichnung des Abkommens über die Verbindung der EAWU und der Seidenstraße im Jahr 2015 deutlich zum Ausdruck gebracht. In dieser Zeit kam es im Herzen Eurasiens zu einer Ergänzung und in einigen Bereichen zu einer Synergie von Entwicklungsvektoren. Wir können davon ausgehen, dass nach dem 3. Belt-and-Road-Gipfel, nach wichtigen bilateralen und multilateralen Treffen und Verhandlungen am Rande dieses groß angelegten Forums, der Integration der EAWU in die Belt-and-Road-Initiative neue Impulse gegeben werden.

“We are in a state of war…. The enemy will pay a price like they have never known before,” declared Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, immediately after the beginning of the Hamas forces’ military operation against Israel.
Netanyahu’s words conceal a fundamental historical fact: Israel has been in a state of war against the people of Palestine, whom he now blatantly calls “the enemy,” for the past 75 years. The “enemy” he is referring to are the Palestinian people, who have been enduring 75 years of violent occupation, bombings, mass arrests and imprisonment, torture, assassinations, and exile at the hands of the Israeli State, just because they would refuse to submit to the illegal occupation of their land and the blatant violation of their fundamental human rights by the Israeli occupation forces.

More deceiving is the claim that this was a “surprise” attack by the Palestinians. But looking back at the shameful history of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people in the past seven decades, and its recent offending actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque, no rational mind would be “surprised” by the Palestinian reaction.
The historically inevitable bloodshed that has started, and has already taken too many lives, is the Israeli States’ own doing. The State of Israel has no other party to blame for this human catastrophe than itself.
However, this is not where the blame stops. The government of the United States is equally — if not more — responsible for the current tragedy. Decades of unconditional support for the Israeli State’s violations of international law and human rights, tens of billions of dollars’ worth of military aid to Israel with eyes closed to the atrocities and terrorism committed by Israeli military and settlers in the occupied Palestinian territories, and persistent blocking of every effort by the international community to call Israel into account for its illegal actions, all have contributed to this horrendous situation.
We call upon the international community to take every necessary collective action to stop this bloodshed based upon the globally recognized international law and the United Nations Charter.
This bloodshed will not be the last until the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is ended and the human rights of the Palestinian people are recognized and fully realized.

Noch nie war Russland mitten in einem Krieg im Nahen Osten so still wie heute.
Russische Meinungsforscher geben nur ungern bekannt, wie weit sich die öffentliche Meinung des Landes von Israel weg hin zu den Palästinensern und der antiamerikanischen arabischen und iranischen Seite bewegt.
Das Schweigen aus dem Kreml zeigt, wie gründlich die Israelis ihre Brücken zu Präsident Wladimir Putin niedergebrannt haben und wie weit sich der russische Präsident, wenn auch stillschweigend, in seiner Einschätzung Israels als feindseligen Staat auf die Seite des Generalstabs bewegt hat – an der Front des Feindes mit der Ukraine, den USA und der NATO. Putins Prosemitismus, der sich seit mehreren Jahren in seiner Beziehung zu Premierminister Benjamin Netanjahu zeigt, ist nun in der Öffentlichkeit und auch im Privaten unmöglich.
Das russische Geld, das problemlos zwischen Moskau und Tel Aviv hin und her geschleust wurde und seinen Einfluss auf Putins Geschäfte mit den Israelis ausübte, flieht nun mit dem Oligarchen Michail Fridman zurück nach . Zu Fridmans Flucht in einen sicheren Hafen in Russland sagte Kreml-Sprecher Dmitri Peskow: „Fridman ist Bürger der Russischen Föderation. Er kann zurückkommen, hier leben, hier gehen, genau wie jeder andere Bürger der Russischen Föderation. Es gibt nichts Ungewöhnliches.“
Darüber sagte der Sprecher der Duma, Wjatscheslaw Wolodin, etwas Ungewöhnlicheres. „Jeder, der das Land verlassen und verwerfliche Taten begangen hat, Schüsse auf russischem Territorium feiert und dem NS-Regime in Kiew den Sieg wünscht, sollte sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass er hier nicht nur unerwünscht ist, sondern dass, wenn er doch zurückkehrt, Magadan [der Gulag] auf ihn wartet.“
Von einer Politik der Gleichwertigkeit und Zweideutigkeit zwischen Israel und den Arabern ist Russland zu einer Politik des Engagements auf arabischer Seite gelangt. Der treibende Faktor war der US-Krieg zur Niederlage und Zerstörung Russlands durch die Ukraine. Je länger der neue palästinensische Krieg dauert, desto klarer wird die militärische und politische Strategie Russlands im Nahen Osten eine neue antiamerikanische Linie verfolgen. Die Folgen sind ebenso groß wie die Niederlage der USA und der NATO, die Russland nun Europa zufügt, und der westliche Sanktionskrieg auf den globalen Rohstoffmärkten und den Handelsrouten auf hoher See .
„Wir erleben eine drastische Verschlechterung der Lage im Nahen Osten“, sagte Putin bei seiner öffentlichen Begrüßung des irakischen Premierministers Muhammed Shia al-Sudani am Dienstagmorgen im Kreml. „Ich denke, viele werden mir zustimmen, dass dies ein klares Beispiel für die gescheiterte Politik der Vereinigten Staaten im Nahen Osten ist, die versucht haben, den Lösungsprozess zu monopolisieren, sich aber leider nicht darum gekümmert haben, für beide Seiten akzeptable Kompromisse zu finden, sondern im Gegenteil eigene Vorstellungen davon vorbringen, wie dies geschehen soll, und Druck auf beide Seiten ausüben, wirklich auf beide – erst auf die eine, dann auf die andere. Aber jedes Mal ohne Berücksichtigung der grundlegenden Interessen des palästinensischen Volkes, vor allem unter Berücksichtigung der Notwendigkeit, den Beschluss des UN-Sicherheitsrates über die Schaffung eines unabhängigen, souveränen palästinensischen Staates umzusetzen.“
Das Außenministerium folgte Putin später am Nachmittag, als das regelmäßige wöchentliche Briefing von Maria Sacharowa mehrere Tage früher vorgezogen wurde, um zu berichten, dass es direkte Verhandlungen mit Politikern Ägyptens, der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate, der Arabischen Liga, Irans usw. gegeben habe Türkei – nicht mit Israel.“*
„Die Wette der USA auf das ‚Einfrieren‘ des Status quo und die Förderung des ‚wirtschaftlichen Friedens‘ sowie den Einsatz kollektiver Formate, die auf die Krisenreaktion zugeschnitten sind, hat sich nicht gerechtfertigt“, sagte Sacharowa. „Jeder sieht das Ergebnis … Die Aussagen von us-amerikanischen Politikernund Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens, die ethnische Säuberungen in der Region fordern, sehen ungeheuerlich aus. Sie rufen offen dazu auf, dass eine Gruppe von Menschen nahezu zur völligen Zerstörung verdammt sei. Wieder einmal sind Aggression, Verletzung der Rechtsstaatlichkeit und der Hass des Höhlenmenschen an der Oberfläche der us-amerikanischen Erklärungen zum guten Aussehen und der Menschenrechtsdogmen aufgetaucht.“
In der ersten direkten russischen Warnung an die US-Marine im östlichen Mittelmeer fügte Sacharowa hinzu: „Bisher sehen wir, dass sich die Situation auf dem Weg der Eskalation entwickelt. Es besteht ein großes Risiko, dass Dritte in diesen Konflikt verwickelt werden. Und das hätte langfristige Folgen für die Region und die Welt.“
Putin führte am Abend ein Telefonat mit dem türkischen Präsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdogan. „Die Notwendigkeit eines sofortigen Waffenstillstands auf beiden Seiten und der Wiederaufnahme des Verhandlungsprozesses wurde betont“, heißt es im Kommuniqué des Kremls. „Es wurde die gegenseitige Bereitschaft zum Ausdruck gebracht, aktiv dazu beizutragen … Es wurden auch einzelne Fragen der russisch-türkischen Zusammenarbeit in verschiedenen Bereichen angesprochen.“
Erdogans Pressemitteilung war aufschlussreicher. Er und Putin hätten „angesprochen, welche Initiativen ergriffen werden können, um den humanitären Bedarf in der Region zu decken, da der türkische Präsident Putin sagte, dass die gezielte Ausrichtung auf zivile Siedlungen besorgniserregend sei und die Türkei einen solchen Schritt nicht begrüße.“ Erdogans Twitter-Ankündigung fügt lautete: „Präsident Erdoğan und der russische Präsident Putin tauschten auch ihre Ansichten über mögliche Initiativen zur Deckung des humanitären Bedarfs in der Region aus.“
Dies ist ein Hinweis darauf, dass Erdogan und Putin über einen türkischen Hilfskonvoi nach Gaza nachdenken, der vor israelischen Angriffen durch die russische Marine von ihrem Stützpunkt Tartus an der syrischen Küste und durch die russische Luftwaffe von Hmeimim aus geschützt wird. Diese humanitäre Operation auf dem Seeweg würde darauf abzielen, die Blockade der Küste durch die Israelis zu durchbrechen und die USS Gerald Ford und ihr Geschwader weiter vor der Küste in Bedrängnis zu bringen. Wenn diese Operation, die an die Gaza-Flottille von 2010 erinnert, jetzt tatsächlich geplant ist – und offene Signale warnen Washington und die US-Marine, damit zu rechnen –, dann sind die Konfrontation und das Risiko einer strategischen Niederlage auf See für die USA und Israel beispiellos.
Die Planung des russischen militärischen Schutzes seewärtiger humanitärer Hilfskonvois im Gazastreifen erstreckt sich auch auf Ägypten.
Dies wurde in dem Gespräch angesprochen, das der ägyptische Außenminister Sameh Shoukry mit Außenminister Sergej Lawrow führte. Daraufhin veröffentlichte die ägyptische Presse israelische Warnungen, gefolgt von Bombenanschlägen, um ägyptische Lastwagen daran zu hindern, Hilfsgüter über die Rafah-Landbrücke am südlichen Ende des Gazastreifens nach Gaza zu liefern.
Eine alternative ägyptische Option ist ein Marinekonvoi. Wenn dies durch den Kreml und das russische Verteidigungsministerium mit einem Erdogan-Putin-Plan eines türkischen Konvois aus dem Norden koordiniert wird, wird die Eskalation auf regionaler und Supermachtebene eingetreten sein, bevor die israelische Invasion in Gaza ihr zuvorkommen kann.
Das russische Verteidigungsministerium hat gegenüber Israel in der Vergangenheit nicht geschwiegen. Seit dem Überfall der israelischen Luftwaffe auf das russische Überwachungsflugzeug Il-20 und der Tötung seiner 15-köpfigen Besatzung im September 2018 hat der Generalstab erklärt, dass er sich mit seinen Maßnahmen gegen die Israelis zurückhält, sie aber als Feind identifiziert .
Vzglyad , die Moskauer Plattform für russisches Militär- und Sicherheitsdenken, schrieb am 17. April 2023 in einem Leitartikel, dass die israelische Regierung durch ihre Parteinahme für die Ukraine während der Sondermilitäroperation zum Gegner Russlands geworden sei: „Die Zeit ist gekommen, eine neue Position einzunehmen.“ die palästinensische Frage. Die Feier des Al-Quds-Tages auf eine neue Ebene zu heben und im Nahostkonflikt eine pro-palästinensischere Position einzunehmen. Auf der Seite derjenigen zu stehen, die Russland im Rahmen ihrer eigenen Interessen helfen (Iran, Saudi-Arabien), gegen diejenigen, die unseren Feinden helfen. Und damit ein ganz klares Signal an die Welt zu senden – ein Signal, dass Russland seine Partner genauso behandeln wird, wie sie es selbst behandeln. Um den Anhängern zu helfen – und nicht, um im Interesse der Gegner zu handeln.“
Die Schaffung eines humanitären Korridors wurde im Briefing des Außenministeriums am Dienstag. „Die Spannungen im Westjordanland nehmen zu. Es besteht ein hohes Risiko, dass der Konflikt auf den Bereich der libanesisch-israelischen Grenze übergreift und dort neue Parteien anzieht. Vor unseren Augen bahnt sich eine große humanitäre Katastrophe an. Jetzt geht es vor allem darum, das Feuer einzustellen und das Blutvergießen zu stoppen. Wir unterstützen die Bemühungen interessierter Parteien zur Lösung dieser vorrangigen Aufgabe. Dies würde es ermöglichen, neue Opfer zu vermeiden, das Leid der Zivilbevölkerung zu beenden, ihre Evakuierung über humanitäre Korridore sicherzustellen und ein Abgleiten in eine regionale humanitäre Katastrophe zu verhindern. Dies ist nicht nur eine Krise oder ein Notfall. Wir sprechen über das Schicksal von Millionen Menschen.“
Sprecherin Sacharowa kritisierte auch die CIA und das Pentagon wegen ihrer überraschenden Niederlage gegen die Hamas. „Wie ist das in einem Jahr passiert? So lange wurde die Operation vorbereitet und dann in wenigen Tagen durchgeführt, ohne dass die Vereinigten Staaten als engster Verbündeter Israels davor gewarnt haben? Sie haben überall Satelliten, entsprechende Ortungsgeräte und Militärstützpunkte, auch in der Region. Es gibt alle Möglichkeiten, nicht nur eine Überwachung, sondern – die Fakten sprechen für sich – eine Überwachung aller Informationen durchzuführen, die über in den USA hergestellte Geräte (Hardware und Software) zirkulieren. Während des gesamten Jahres der Vorbereitung einer so großen Operation.
Und die Sprecherin des russischen Außenministeriums erklärte weiter: „Zwei Monate lang Ende 2021 und zwei Monate Anfang 2022 haben die Vereinigten Staaten auf allen Ebenen erklärt, wie Russland die Ukraine ‚angreifen‘ würde.“ Dies geschah speziell, um einen Informationshintergrund zu schaffen, um die Augen der ganzen Welt davon abzulenken, wie die Vereinigten Staaten und ihre NATO-Kollegen (hauptsächlich das Vereinigte Königreich) all die Jahre lang die Ukraine mit Waffen gepumpt und die Anti-Ukraine geschaffen haben -Russland-Projekt, ein antirussisches Sprungbrett … Nach der entsprechenden Anweisung aus Washington folgte eine mehrfache Verschärfung des Beschusses des Donbass durch das Regime von VA Zelensky. Dann, Ende 2021/Anfang 2022, „wussten die USA alles“ und erzählten es allen.“
Der erste öffentliche Hinweis darauf, wie der russische Militärgeheimdienst und der Generalstab die Vorfälle einschätzten, tauchte am Sonntag in Vzglyad » .

„Diejenigen, die zuvor als Bauern in gewebten Hausschuhen wahrgenommen wurden, die bestenfalls eine Bushaltestelle in die Luft sprengen könnten, zerstörten in wenigen Stunden einen der Mythen über den Staat Israel“, schloss Jewgeni Krutikow nachdem er die Schwächen der israelischen Verteidigungslinien, das übermäßige Vertrauen in seine Technologie und die Unterschätzung der arabischen Fähigkeiten aufgeführt hatte. „Die IDF [Israel Defense Forces] lag im Koma … Daher hat Israel Verluste erlitten, die weitaus größer sind als nur tragische Verluste an Arbeitskräften und Ausrüstung. Der palästinensische Angriff hat die Vorstellung davon zerstört, wie die israelischen Sicherheitskräfte organisiert sind und wie leistungsfähig sie sind. Es hat sich herausgestellt, dass sich die israelischen Sicherheitskräfte auf den Lorbeeren der Siege vergangener Generationen ausruhen. Geheimdienst und Spionageabwehr sind wirkungslos, und das israelische Militär hat die Änderungen in den Kampftaktiken, die derzeit während der aktuellen Konflikte stattfinden, verschlafen.“
In einem persönlichen Telegram-Beitrag erläuterte Krutikov den derzeitigen Konsens der russischen Militärangehörigen:
„1. Die IDF und der Mossad waren völlig unvorbereitet. Es gibt kein primäres Schutzsystem, die Garnisonen der Grenzposten schliefen am Samstag, dem [religiösen] Simchat-Tora-Feiertag, tief und fest. Die Araber erreichten zu Fuß langsam die unbewachten Stellungen der Juden. Die bloße Idee dieser Beiträge war Unsinn.
2. Sie wissen überhaupt nicht, was Drohnen, Flugabwehrsysteme und all das sind. Der Iron Dome ist eine Fiktion. Sie leben seit einigen Jahren in einer Art Fantasiewelt.
3. Alles über Israel ist ein Mythos. Es gibt kein solches Verteidigungssystem, es gibt keine solche Intelligenz. Ihre PR ist solide.
4. Entweder wurden die Araber auf besondere Weise ausgebildet, oder sie entwickelten sich irgendwie unerwartet zu einer neuen Lebensform. Die Operation war für mindestens ein Jahr geplant und berücksichtigte alle neuen Trends…
5. Eine große Menge Waffen der Araber konnte nicht vom Himmel fallen. Wie ist es dorthin gekommen? Auch hier übermitteln wir der israelischen Mutter des Geheimdienstes unsere herzlichsten Grüße.
6. Taktisches Training fehlt völlig. Ebenso wie der gepriesene Patriotismus.
7. Außergewöhnliche Grausamkeit ist nicht nur ein Zeichen dieser Region.
8. Wo kann es sonst noch Feuer fangen?“ einschließlich des jüdischen Gottes.
In einer letzten Zeile, die ein ironisches Echo des orthodoxen jüdischen Glaubens an die Apokalypse sein sollte, schrieb Krutikov: „Wahrlich, die letzten Tage kommen.“
Der Reporter, der als GRU-Offizier vor Ort gedient hat, berichtete am Sonntag in Vzglyad: „Es ist klar, dass Israel technologisch stärker ist. The Russian communiqué indicates the Israeli official was warned the proposed IDF plan to destroy Gaza, occupy the territory, and cleanse it of “human animals” -- was “fraught…with the most devastating consequences for the humanitarian situation in the region.” The Israeli press has not reported Bogdanov’s warning to Ben Zvi; the Israeli had been telling Tass hours earlier: “when we declared a state of war with Hamas, we meant that the state of war implies everything, including a ground operation," Ben Zvi said. "When will it begin? Right now certain work is being done so as not to make any hasty steps. It is necessary, of course, to analyze things thoroughly. What is needed? How should it be done? I cannot rule out that it will not happen, either. It is possible that it will happen. I don't know, it is to be decided at the army level.” He then told a meeting with Moscow Jews that Israel is not targeting all the Palestinians of Gaza: “this war will continue as long as Hamas exists as a terrorist organization, and we will have to pay with more and more casualties. In order to prevent this, we need to destroy all these terrorist cells of Hamas.”

A massacre in a Ukrainian village last week that was roundly blamed on the Russian military in Western media reports has taken a new twist that further shows the incident was actually a false-flag provocation by the Kiev regime.
Western media last week reported that 52 people were killed when a cafe was allegedly hit by a Russian precision missile on Thursday, October 5. All Western media reports cited Ukrainian officials as their source for attributing blame on the Russian military firing an Iskander missile.
The cafe was crowded with families who had attended a funeral for a Ukrainian soldier.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who was on the same day attending a summit in Granada, Spain, with European leaders, denounced the atrocity as “genocidal aggression” by Russia.
After widely reporting the slaughter in the village of Hroza in eastern Ukraine amid a torrent of condemnations of Russia, as usual, Western media have quickly shifted their focus onto other world events, primarily the eruption in violence between Israelis and Palestinians over the weekend.
However, a follow-up report by AP on the horror at Hroza inadvertently sheds more light on who actually fired the missile. There is good reason to suspect that the Kiev regime orchestrated the air strike as a false-flag propaganda stunt. In other words, the regime deliberately killed civilians in its own territory in a cynical effort to smear Russia.
The new twist is that the families of the victims are reportedly at a loss as to how Russian forces knew of the gathering of people for the dead soldier’s funeral. The village has no military bases or tactical value. It is situated nearly 30 kilometers from the frontline between Ukrainian and Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.
The follow-up AP report claims that local people suspect that an informer in the village might have given the coordinates of the funeral to the Russian military. But rather than making that deduction, a more plausible explanation for the deadly attack can be found in the acutely felt political needs of the Kiev regime.
The timing of the massacre on the same day that Zelensky was making a big pitch for more military aid from European NATO members strongly suggests that Kiev regime forces carried out the strike on Hroza village to give its president more emotive power in his set-piece appeal to European leaders.
There is precedent for such a vile act. As noted earlier, when U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Kiev last month on September 6 to deliver $1 billion in American weaponry, on the same day a missile strike killed 17 people in the town of Konstantinovka in eastern Ukraine. The town is under the control of the Ukrainian military. That atrocity was immediately blamed on Russia which Zelensky and Blinken vociferously condemned at the time. It turned out later, though, that the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out the air strike in a seeming error, according to the New York Times.
It is argued by this author that the strike on Konstantinovka was not an error, but rather a deliberate act of killing Ukrainian civilians to smear Russia and to garner support for more American military aid.
The same modus operandi is believed to explain the massacre at the village of Hroza last week.
Bear in mind that the summit in Granada addressed by Zelensky where he cited the carnage at Hroza and suitably accused Russia of depraved terrorism was held at a crucial political moment concerning American and European financial support for the Kiev regime. The U.S. Congress has temporarily suspended billions of dollars for Ukraine and the pressure is on Europe to maintain the flow of money.
The highly emotive appeal by Zelensky in Granada appeared to bolster European military support with reports that same day of Spain pledging to supply more air-defense systems to Ukraine.
Returning to the latest AP report, it was said: “Locals say it [Hroza village] is strictly a civilian area. There has never been any military base, whether Russian or Ukrainian. They said only civilians or family came to the funeral and wake, and residents were the only people who would have known where and when it was taking place.”
The AP report continued: “Dmytro Chubenko, spokesman for the regional prosecutor, said investigators are looking into whether someone from the area transmitted the cafe’s coordinates to the Russians — a betrayal to everyone now grieving in Hroza… Many share that suspicion, describing a strike timed to kill the maximum number of people. The date of the funeral was set a few weeks ago, and the time was shared throughout the village late last week.”
This version of events stretches credulity. Would a local village inhabitant go out of their way to tell the Russian military about a family funeral gathering? Would the Russian military go to the trouble of firing an Iskander precision missile at a civilian gathering 30 kms from its front line and also knowing that Western media would predictably vilify Russia for “barbarity”?
That explanation of an alleged informer and Russian depravity does not add up.
What does add up, rather, is the Kiev regime authorities knew that a funeral for one of their own soldiers was taking place on the same day that their president was making a big appeal for more weapons at a summit in Spain.
Zelensky needed a propaganda punch for his appeal and Western media obliged as usual to paint Russia as evil barbarians.

The Israeli prime minister’s persistent obsession with the Islamic Republic may finally drag the US into another disastrous regional war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spent the past three decades sounding the alarm about Iran’s nuclear programme and threatening to attack the country on countless occasions. Most recently in September, he said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly that Tehran must face a “credible nuclear threat” before his office corrected the record to “credible military threat”.
After Hamas’s attack on October 7, Netanyahu may finally be able to act on his threats. The gruesome scenes in southern Israel have provided the Israeli prime minister with the necessary pretext and international backing for a wider response.
Netanyahu has both a political and a personal stake in all this. A drawn-out regional conflict would block or at least postpone any official accountability for his utter failure to prevent Hamas’s attack from happening in the first place and could also put his multiple indictments on corruption charges on an indefinite hold.
Overnight, he transformed from a failed and embattled prime minister to a wartime leader, with opposition parties clamouring to join him in a national unity government.
He declared war and ordered an immediate retaliation against Hamas’s stronghold in Gaza. The Israeli army unleashed a vicious campaign of bombardment on the overpopulated Gaza Strip, killing more than 500 people, and preparing for a potential land invasion.
Netanyahu has not elaborated on the next phases of the war, but he has received the unconditional support of Western governments to do what it takes, as long as it takes, to “defend Israel”. The administration of US President Joe Biden has gone even further, providing Israel with more arms and ammunition, dispatching its most modern and sophisticated aircraft carrier, the Ford, along with a number of destroyers to the Eastern Mediterranean, and beefing up other forces stationed in the region, enough to start World War III.
Biden’s motivation for the escalatory deployment is, reportedly, strategic deterrence, meant to ensure that “no enemies of Israel can or should seek advantage from the current situation”. But historically, Israel has never allowed any foreign boots on its soil, and is in no need of the US armadas to take on Hamas.
Biden’s incentive, therefore, could also be political, ie to ensure that the GOP doesn’t exploit the Israeli drama at his expense ahead of the presidential elections in 2024. Already, Republican opponents have tried to link Biden’s recent prisoner swap deal with Iran, which involved the unfreezing of $6bn in Iranian assets, to the Hamas attacks.
But Netanyahu and his fanatic ministers may have something very different in mind for the US deployment, that goes beyond military deterrence and political posturing. He may try to widen the scope of the war to include Iran.
His government has already accused Iran of supporting and directing Hamas’s operation, as it has previously done about other Palestinian attacks on Israelis. Scores of Israel supporters and neoconservatives, as well as media pundits in the US and Europe, have joined in by making the case for Iranian involvement.
The Wall Street Journal even reported – based on interviews with unnamed local sources – that Iranian officials and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps were directly involved in orchestrating and planning the attacks over several weeks.
US officials have said they haven’t seen evidence of Tehran’s involvement, yet.
For its part, Iran has called the attack a spontaneous Palestinian action in self-defence, but officials have not tried to hide their glee at Israel’s misfortune. They have expressed confidence that the attack will deter further Arab, meaning Saudi, normalisation with Israel, and eventually lead to its downfall.
Meanwhile, Iran’s ally the Lebanese Hezbollah has praised the Hamas operation and engaged the Israeli forces in the Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms, threatening greater involvement if Israel enters Gaza.
Iran and its allies’ temerity may well come back to haunt them, just as Israel’s hubris did – leading to its utter humiliation at the hands of Hamas fighters. Neither Iran nor Israel is learning from history, as they continue to escalate their proxy conflict towards war.
For years, the Israeli army and secret services have sabotaged the Iranian nuclear programme and targeted Iranian assets abroad. Iran for its part has supported various client armed groups in the Middle East, attacking US and Israeli allies.
Despite his bluster and bravado, Netanyahu couldn’t and wouldn’t attack Iran, without a green light and support from the US. But the bloody attacks are a game-changer, giving the Israeli prime minister the perfect opportunity to realise his fantasy of crushing Iran, by tricking the Biden administration into war.
This will not be easy considering Biden’s presumed commitment to end “the forever wars”, reflected in the humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. His administration has also moved to prioritise the great power competition with China and Russia, especially after the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.
But in reality, the US has not withdrawn from the Middle East, it has merely moved around its forces and military assets in the region. Biden himself has vowed to “not walk away and leave a vacuum to be filled by China, Russia, or Iran”.
Once the case against Tehran’s role in the attacks has been fully articulated by Israel and the US, they might first try to pressure it into facilitating the release of Israeli captives taken by Hamas – a top priority for Netanyahu.
If Iran refuses and chooses to use Hezbollah as leverage against Israel, this could well trigger a wider confrontation that draws in the US with incalculable consequences. Unfortunately, in the adulterated world of Washington politics, unconditional US support of Israel is the only thing that Republican and Democrats agree on.
It is crucial to remember that the situation in 2023 is vastly more challenging and complicated than the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, which ended in utter disaster for the US and Iraqis. A repeat against Iran is sure to be far worse for all concerned.

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant used genocidal language and ordered mass war crimes in the occupied Gaza Strip on Monday in response to Hamas’ weekend assault and massacre of Israeli civilians, setting the stage for a large-scale escalation of the violence that has already led to the killing of at least 800 Israelis and more than 500 Palestinians.
Gallant said that he had ordered “a complete siege of the Gaza Strip,” which is home to 2.3 million Palestinians, nearly half of them children.
“There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” he said. “We are fighting human animals, and we act accordingly.”
What Gallant ordered — the collective punishment of a civilian population — amounts to a war crime under international law, as well as potentially a crime against humanity and the crime of genocide, some international law experts have pointed out. Hamas’s massacre of civilians and taking of at least 150 hostages, whom it has reportedly threatened to execute in response to the targeting of civilians in Gaza, are also war crimes.
Hamas and Israel’s crimes against civilians, which are likely to escalate in the coming days, come after years of impunity for Israel’s crimes against Palestinians. The historical lack of accountability has bred a culture of disregard for international law that directly resulted in the weekend’s violence, human rights advocates say.
“Deliberate killings of civilians, hostage-taking, and collective punishment are heinous crimes that have no justification,” Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. “The unlawful attacks and systematic repression that have mired the region for decades will continue, so long as human rights and accountability are disregarded.”
In the wake of Hamas’s attack on Israel on Saturday, the Israeli military launched a bombing campaign on Gaza. Israeli raids flattened residential buildings and targeted a densely populated refugee camp over the weekend.
Humanitarian workers in the Gaza strip have also reported that hospitals are completely overwhelmed by the number of casualties and ambulances are coming under fire. A ground invasion of the occupied territory is also widely expected in the coming days.
Experts have noted that Israel’s practice of “warning” civilians — like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s call on Gaza’s residents to “leave now because we will operate forcefully everywhere” — is — .
Israel Isn’t Entitled to “Self-Defense” Against the People Under Its Occupation
There is nowhere for people to seek safety in the Gaza strip, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, since Israel imposed an air, land, and sea blockade on the territory in 2007, effectively trapping them in.
War crimes fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which, in 2021, opened an investigation on war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territories. The investigation prompted fierce opposition by Israel and the United States — neither of which are members of the court — and it has largely stalled.
Human rights advocates quickly pointed to Gallant’s words as an “admission of intent” to commit crimes, calling on ICC prosecutor Karim Khan to take notice. But international officials’ responses to his comments were largely muted. The Biden administration has repeatedly stated its support for Israel since Saturday’s attack, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledging the U.S.’s “unwavering focus on halting the attacks by Hamas” but offering no immediate comment on Israel’s declared retaliation against Palestinian civilians.
A spokesperson for Khan’s office wrote in a statement to The Intercept that the ICC’s mandate in Palestine “is ongoing and applies to crimes committed in the current context.” The spokesperson called on those with information relevant to investigation to provide it to the office, but did not comment on Gallant’s words or on criticism that the stalling of its investigation might have contributed to recent crimes.
As human rights advocates and international law experts have long warned, impunity for war crimes only leads to more. Last year, as Russia staged a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many pointed to the impunity for war crimes it committed in Syria and elsewhere and argued that the lack of accountability directly enabled similar crimes to be committed in Ukraine. The ICC, for its part, responded to Russian crimes in Ukraine by immediately dispatching investigators there, leading to charges implicating Russian leadership all the way up to President Vladimir Putin earlier this year. But there was no such response following Israeli crimes in Gaza, including after military campaigns in 2018, 2021, and 2022 that left hundreds of Palestinian civilians dead.
“If we’ve learned anything through prior escalations, it is that so long as there is impunity for serious abuses, we will continue to see more repression and shedding of civilian blood,” said Shakir. Human Rights Watch called on the ICC “to accelerate its investigation into serious crimes committed by all parties in Palestine.”
While both parties committed heinous crimes, Gallant’s call for a complete siege on Gaza revealed the underlying imbalance at play: While Hamas’s attack shocked Israelis and the world and amounted to the most serious attack on Israel in five decades, it paled in comparison to Gallant’s threat to starve 2.3 million trapped civilians.
“This is why this never was and never will be a ‘war’ of equals,” media critic Sana Saeed noted on Monday. “Because one side has the power to entirely eliminate an entire population, to control whether they live or die.”
Gallant wasn’t the only Israeli leader to tap into genocidal rhetoric in response to Hamas’s attack, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declaring, “It’s time to be cruel,” and Knesset member Ariel Kallner calling for a “Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 48,” a reference to the massacre and expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians upon Israel’s founding.
Other observers denounced efforts by either party to use crimes committed by the other as justification for committing more crimes.
“Failure of one party to a conflict to abide by the laws of war does not absolve the other party from complying with the laws of war,” noted Sarah Leah Whitson, director of Democracy for the Arab World Now.
“Israel certainly cannot claim the upper moral hand. Israeli government ministers now calling to kill, destroy, crush and even starve the residents of Gaza forget that this is already Israeli policy,” the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem echoed in a statement. “Intentional attacks on civilians are prohibited and unacceptable. There is no justification for such crimes, whether they are committed as part of a struggle for freedom from oppression or cited as part of a war against terror.”
Palestinian and international human rights groups also called on the United Nations to address the underlying causes behind this weekend’s events.
“Israel has a horrific track record of committing war crimes with impunity in previous wars on Gaza,” Amnesty International wrote in a statement that called on Palestinian armed groups to refrain from targeting civilians.
“The root causes of these repeated cycles of violence must be addressed as a matter of urgency. This requires upholding international law and ending Israel’s 16-year-long illegal blockade on Gaza, and all other aspects of Israel’s system of apartheid imposed on all Palestinians.”
Palestinian human rights groups echoed that call.
“For decades, Palestinians have been calling on the international community to take concrete and meaningful actions, beyond statements of condemnation, to put an end to these violations,” Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights wrote in an open letter to the United Nations on Monday. “The international community’s lack of political will to hold Israel to account only emboldens Israel to continue committing crimes against the Palestinian people as a whole.”

Israelis will never have peace until they recognize that Palestinians have the same right to the same peace and independence that they enjoy.
When I first went to Palestine as a young reporter in the 1960s, I stayed on a kibbutz. The people I met were hard-working, spirited and called themselves socialists. I liked them.
One evening at dinner, I asked about the silhouettes of people in the far distance, beyond our perimeter.
“Arabs”, they said, “nomads”.
The words were almost spat out. Israel, they said, meaning Palestine, had been mostly wasteland and one of the great feats of the Zionist enterprise was to turn the desert green.
They gave as an example their crop of Jaffa oranges, which was exported to the rest of the world. What a triumph against the odds of nature and humanity’s neglect.
It was the first lie. Most of the orange groves and vineyards belonged to Palestinians who had been tilling the soil and exporting oranges and grapes to Europe since the eighteenth century. The former Palestinian town of Jaffa was known by its previous inhabitants as “the place of sad oranges”.
On the kibbutz, the word “Palestinian” was never used. “Why?” I asked. The answer was a troubled silence.
All over the colonized world, the true sovereignty of Indigenous people is feared by those who can never quite cover the fact, and the crime, that they live on stolen land.
Denying people’s humanity is the next step – as the Jewish people know only too well. Defiling people’s dignity and culture and pride follows as logically as violence.
In Ramallah, following an invasion of the West Bank by the late Ariel Sharon in 2002, I walked through streets of crushed cars and demolished houses, to the Palestinian Cultural Center. Until that morning, Israeli soldiers had camped there.
I was met by the center’s director, novelist Liana Badr, whose original manuscripts lay scattered and torn across the floor. The hard drive containing her fiction, and a library of plays and poetry had been taken by Israeli soldiers. Almost everything was smashed and defiled.
Not a single book survived with all its pages; not a single master tape from one of the best collections of Palestinian cinema.
The soldiers had urinated and defecated on the floors, on desks, on embroideries and works of art. They had smeared faeces on children’s paintings and written – in shit – “Born to kill.”
Badr had tears in her eyes, but she was unbowed. She said, “We will make it right again.”
What enrages those who colonize, occupy, steal, oppress, vandalize and defile is their victims’ refusal to comply. And this is the tribute we should all pay the Palestinians. They refuse to comply. They go on. They wait – until they fight again. And they do so even when those governing them collaborate with their oppressors.
In the midst of the 2014 Israeli bombardment of Gaza, the Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer never stopped reporting. He and his family were stricken; he queued for food and water and carried it through the rubble. When I phoned him, I could hear the bombs outside his door. He refused to comply.
Omer’s reports, illustrated by his graphic photographs, were a model of professional journalism that shamed the compliant and craven reporting of the so-called mainstream in Britain and the United States. The BBC notion of objectivity – amplifying the myths and lies of authority, a practice of which it is proud – is shamed every day by the likes of Mohamed Omer.
For more than 40 years, I have recorded the refusal of the people of Palestine to comply with their oppressors: Israel, the United States, Britain and the European Union.
Since 2008, Britain alone has granted licences for export to Israel of arms and missiles, drones and sniper rifles, worth US$566 million.
Those who have stood up to this, without weapons, those who have refused to comply, are among Palestinians I have been privileged to know.
My friend, the late Mohammed Jarella, who toiled for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in 1967, showed me a Palestinian refugee camp for the first time. It was a bitter winter’s day and schoolchildren shook with the cold. “One day …” he would say. “One day …”
Mustafa Barghouti, whose eloquence remains undimmed, who described the tolerance that existed in Palestine among Jews, Muslims and Christians until, as he told me, “the Zionists wanted a state at the expense of the Palestinians.”
Dr. Mona El-Farra, a physician in Gaza, whose passion was raising money for plastic surgery for children disfigured by Israeli bullets and shrapnel. Her hospital was flattened by Israeli bombs in 2014.
Dr. Khalid Dahlan, a psychiatrist, whose clinics for children in Gaza — children sent almost mad by Israeli violence — were oases of civilization.
Fatima and Nasser are a couple whose home stood in a village near Jerusalem designated “Zone A and B,” meaning that the land was declared for Jews only. Their parents had lived there; their grandparents had lived there. Today, the bulldozers are laying roads for Jews only, protected by laws for Jews only.
It was past midnight when Fatima went into labor with their second child. The baby was premature; and when they arrived at a checkpoint with the hospital in view, the young Israeli soldier said they needed another document.
Fatima was bleeding badly. The soldier laughed and imitated her moans and told them, “Go home”. The baby was born there in a truck. It was blue with cold and soon, without care, died from exposure. The baby’s name was Sultan.
For Palestinians, these will be familiar stories. The question is: why are they not familiar in London and Washington, Brussels and Sydney?
In Syria, a recent liberal cause — a George Clooney cause — is bankrolled handsomely in Britain and the United States, even though the beneficiaries, the so-called rebels, are dominated by jihadist fanatics, the product of the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and the destruction of modern Libya.
And yet, the longest occupation and resistance in modern times is not recognized. When the United Nations suddenly stirs and defines Israel as an apartheid state, as it did this year, there is outrage – not against a state whose “core purpose” is racism but against a U.N. commission that dared break the silence.
“Palestine,” said Nelson Mandela, “is the greatest moral issue of our time.”
Why is this truth suppressed, day after day, month after month, year after year?
On Israel — the apartheid state, guilty of a crime against humanity and of more international law-breaking than any other — the silence persists among those who know and whose job it is to keep the record straight.
On Israel, so much journalism is intimidated and controlled by a groupthink that demands silence on Palestine while honourable journalism has become dissidence: a metaphoric underground.
A single word – “conflict” – enables this silence. “The Arab-Israeli conflict,” intone the robots at their teleprompters. When a veteran BBC reporter, a man who knows the truth, refers to “two narratives,” the moral contortion is complete.
There is no conflict, no two narratives, with their moral fulcrum. There is a military occupation enforced by a nuclear-armed power backed by the greatest military power on earth; and there is an epic injustice.
The word “occupation” may be banned, deleted from the dictionary. But the memory of historical truth cannot be banned: of the systematic expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland. “Plan D” the Israelis called it in 1948.
The Israeli historian Benny Morris describes how David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, was asked by one of his generals: “What shall we do with the Arabs?”
The prime minister, wrote Morris, “made a dismissive, energetic gesture with his hand”. “Expel them!” he said.
Seventy years later, this crime is suppressed in the intellectual and political culture of the West. Or it is debatable, or merely controversial. Highly-paid journalists eagerly accept Israeli government trips, hospitality and flattery, then are truculent in their protestations of independence. The term, “useful idiots,” was coined for them.
In 2011, I was struck by the ease with which one of Britain’s most acclaimed novelists, Ian McEwan, a man bathed in the glow of bourgeois enlightenment, accepted the Jerusalem Prize for literature in the apartheid state.
Would McEwan have gone to Sun City in apartheid South Africa? They gave prizes there, too, all expenses paid. McEwan justified his action with weasel words about the independence of “civil society.”
Propaganda — of the kind McEwan delivered, with its token slap on the wrists for his delighted hosts — is a weapon for the oppressors of Palestine. Like sugar, it insinuates almost everything today.
Understanding and deconstructing state and cultural propaganda is our most critical task. We are being frog-marched into a second Cold War, whose eventual aim is to subdue and balkanise Russia and intimidate China.
When Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke privately for more than two hours at the G20 meeting in Hamburg, apparently about the need not to go to war with each other, the most vociferous objectors were those who have commandeered liberalism, such as the Zionist political writer of the Guardian.
“No wonder Putin was smiling in Hamburg,” wrote Jonathan Freedland.
“He knows he has succeeded in his chief objective: he has made America weak again.” Cue the hissing for Evil Vlad.
These propagandists have never known war but they love the imperial game of war. What Ian McEwan calls “civil society” has become a rich source of related propaganda.
Take a term often used by the guardians of civil society — “human rights.” Like another noble concept, “democracy,” “human rights” has been all but emptied of its meaning and purpose.
Like “peace process” and “roadmap,” human rights in Palestine have been hijacked by Western governments and the corporate NGOs they fund and which claim a quixotic moral authority.
So when Israel is called upon by governments and NGOs to “respect human rights” in Palestine, nothing happens, because they all know there is nothing to fear; nothing will change.
Mark the silence of the European Union, which accommodates Israel while refusing to maintain its commitments to the people of Gaza — such as keeping the lifeline of the Rafah border crossing open: a measure it agreed to as part of its role in the cessation of fighting in 2014. A seaport for Gaza, agreed by Brussels in 2014, has been abandoned.
The U.N. commission I have referred to — its full name is the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia — described Israel as, and I quote, “designed for the core purpose” of racial discrimination.
Millions understand this. What the governments in London, Washington, Brussels and Tel Aviv cannot control is that humanity at street level is changing perhaps as never before.
People everywhere are stirring and are more aware, in my view, than ever before. Some are already in open revolt. The atrocity of Grenfell Tower in London has brought communities together in a vibrant almost national resistance.
Thanks to a people’s campaign, the judiciary is today examining the evidence of a possible prosecution of Tony Blair for war crimes. Even if this fails, it is a crucial development, dismantling yet another barrier between the public and its recognition of the voracious nature of the crimes of state power — the systemic disregard for humanity perpetrated in Iraq, in Grenfell Tower, in Palestine. Those are the dots waiting to be joined.
For most of the 21st century, the fraud of corporate power posing as democracy has depended on the propaganda of distraction: largely on a cult of “me-ism” designed to disorientate our sense of looking out for others, of acting together, of social justice and internationalism.
Class, gender and race were wrenched apart. The personal became the political and the media the message. The promotion of bourgeois privilege was presented as “progressive” politics. It wasn’t. It never is. It is the promotion of privilege and power.
Among young people, internationalism has found a vast new audience. Look at the support for Jeremy Corbyn and the reception the G20 circus in Hamburg received. By understanding the truth and imperatives of internationalism, and rejecting colonialism, we understand the struggle of Palestine.
Mandela put it this way: “We know only too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”
At the heart of the Middle East is the historic injustice in Palestine. Until that is resolved, and Palestinians have their freedom and homeland, there will be no peace in the region, or perhaps anywhere.
What Mandela was saying is that freedom itself is precarious while powerful governments can deny justice to others, terrorize others, imprison and kill others, in our name. Israel certainly understands the threat that one day it might have to be normal.
That is why its ambassador to Britain is Mark Regev, well known to journalists as a professional propagandist, and why the “huge bluff” of charges of anti-Semitism, as Ilan Pappe called it, was allowed to contort the Labour Party and undermine Corbyn as leader. The point is, it did not succeed.
Events are moving quickly now. The remarkable Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions campaign, BDS, is succeeding, day by day; cities and towns, trade unions and student bodies are endorsing it. The British government’s attempt to restrict local councils from enforcing BDS has failed in the courts.
These are not straws in the wind. When the Palestinians rise again, as they will, they may not succeed at first, but they will eventually if we understand that they are us, and we are them.
