Vilimsky kritisiert «Green Deal»

Last week was the anniversary of the GREAT ISIS MASSACRE in Deir Ez Zor.. When will the US be kicked out, and what future for the anti-ISIS forces of the SDF/AANES coalition?

العربية(read in arabic) //from thefreeonline on 13th Aug 23 by Omar Abu Layla

August 5, 2014..Islamic State executes 700 people from Syrian al-Shaitat

Justice for the victims of the al-Shaitat massacre is only just starting to emerge, and the international community must do its part.

The specter of the Islamic State continues to conjure up harrowing memories throughout their former areas of operation and control. In the Deir al-Zour province, for example, one memory of violence immediately comes to mind: the massacre carried out against the al-Shaitat tribe in eastern Deir al-Zour.

Every year on the ninth of August, the families of the victims commemorate the massacre, trying to draw the world’s attention to what happened nine years ago at the hands of Daesh

Nevertheless, in the towns of Abu Hamam, al-Kashkiyah and Gharanij—the scene of these deliberate attacks in 2014—there now exists hope for a better future at the economic, social, and security levels in spite of the trauma that continues to haunt its residents.

The al-Shaitat tribe—occupants of the town of Abu Hamam and the surrounding villages of al-Kashkiyah and al-Gharanij—are a sub-branch of the large al-Akidat tribe that extends deep into Iraq as well as Syria.

August 2014 Massacre And Media: ISIS And The massacre Of the Shaitat Tribe …

The arab al-Shaitat tribe made a name for themselves during the period of the Islamic State’s campaign, both in their singular act of resistance against Daesh in the early days of their operation in Syria and in the brutal reprisal Daesh enacted in response.

Understanding the factors leading up to the massacre and the repercussions that still continue in the region are vital for understanding the legacy of Daesh in Syria, and in working to obtain justice for the victims and their families.

Mapping the Attacks

In July 2014, Daesh’s military battles against its opponents in the Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions and Jabhat al-Nusra—now rebranded as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)—ended as the group took control of the town of Ash-Shahil in eastern Deir al-Zour, which had served as the latter’s main point of operation in the area. After Ash-Shahil fell in the hands of Daesh, al-Nusra withdrew towards southern Syria while the FSA factions withdrew to the northern part of the country.

Daesh forcibly displaced the people of Ash-Shahil for two weeks—after which they were required to declare their “repentance” to Daesh in return for a guarantee that Daesh would not pursue members of the town.

Although al-Shaitat was not part of this agreement, the promise of clemency reflected Daesh’s strategy in each area it came to control during this period. Ash-Shahil had been at the forefront in the fight against Daesh, so the al-Shaitat area to the south, including the three towns of Abu Hamam, Al-Kashkiyah and Gharanij—was left to fend for itself when Ash-Shahil made the agreement

Subsequently, Daesh sent some of its representatives to these towns of al-Shaitat. The battles in this area were already over and Daesh leadership believed it necessary to have an agreement with the al-Shaitat tribe—in particular concerning oil wells under al-Shaitat control.

Islamic State Jihadists Slaughter 700 Sunni Tribesmen in Syria …

The dignitaries of al-Shaitat had set preconditions, including preventing Islamic State headquarters from taking root inside the towns of al-Shaitat, and in turn the group agreed on the condition that the entire area of al-Shaitat be under Daesh’s control. The agreement also stipulated that some wells remain under the control of the tribe while the others come under the control of Daesh.

It only became clear later that Daesh used such agreements to co-opt as many of the residents and tribes as possible in this important early stage as it took control of most of the eastern, western and northern countryside of Deir al-Zour, with little intention to hold by their stipulations.

The agreement between Daesh and al-Shaitat tribe lasted for only about a month. Even during this period, confrontations emerged over issues such as wearing the hijab, growing beards, and other social strictures from Daesh.

August 2o14.. MASS GRAVE UNCOVERED IN EASTERN SYRIA, 230 (EXECUTED) BODIES FOUND ..

The group’s so-called Hisba apparatus would periodically enter the towns of al-Shaitat to give instructions according to the group’s values and principles, which the people of al-Shaitat had little interest in as they intended to continue exercising their freedom.

However, the incident that officially voided the agreement came at the end of July, when a Daesh patrol raided the home of a wanted man in Abu Hamam. The agreement had forbidden Daesh military raids against the residents of the three towns, with any arrests to be coordinated with the dignitaries of the al-Shaitat tribe.

1-In eastern #Syria, Kurdish forces’ arrest of a despised warlord has stirred an uprising, causing the deaths of dozens. An investigation by @hxhassan@OALD24 reveals the real motive behind the arrest and the circumstances that led to it. @newlinesmag https://t.co/qF0JWcVpl3— Orwa Ajjoub | عُروة (@OAjjoub) September 6, 2023

The wanted man resisted arrest by the Daesh patrol that raided his house, and he was killed during the exchange of fire. His family also clashed with the patrol and killed all of its members, burned one of the checkpoints belonging to Daesh, and arrested the checkpoint officials. This was the initial spark that led the whole al-Shaitat tribe to rise up and fight Daesh.

Daesh responded by carrying out an attack within the week, arresting more than 50 civilian workers from an al-Shaitat town who were working in al-Tanak oil field in eastern Deir al-Zour.

Subsequently, tribal dignitaries entered into negotiations with Daesh to release the prisoners from both sides. And indeed, the people of al-Shaitat adhered to the negotiation results and released the ten Daesh members who had been arrested during the raid on the checkpoint. The response of Daesh, however, was like a thunderbolt to the entire tribe.

Instead of releasing their hostages, Daesh put out a video in which they killed the civilian prisoners in cold blood and buried them in a mass grave.

This violence triggered an uprising of the al-Shaitat against Daesh headquarters located outside the borders of the tribe areas, killing Daesh members and burning its headquarters in the towns of Suweidan Jazeera, al-Tayana, the border of al-Baghuz, and other areas under Daesh control.

Great insights by @OALD24 who heads the Deirezzor news agency Deirezzor24 https://t.co/ACTjuBnYUu pic.twitter.com/NnKdRS7eeg— ScharoMaroof (@ScharoMaroof) September 4, 2023

It was then that Daesh obtained a fatwa that justified their whole-scale killing of tribal members. The group relied on religious ideology and the weaponization of fatwas to control the minds of its members and leaders, seize large areas, and massacre groups of people based on identity.

In this case, the so-called Abu Abdullah al-Kuwaiti issued a fatwa that the people of al-Shaitat belonged to “a group refusing to obey Islamic rule by arms.” The text continued by asserting that “it is not permissible to hold a truce with them, release their prisoners neither with money nor with anything else. It is not permissible to eat from the animals they slaughter, and no one is allowed to marry their women. It is allowed to kill their captives and to follow those of them who flee and kill them. It is also allowed to kill their wounded, and they must be fought even if they do not start fighting.”

The religious rationale of this fatwa argued that a group such as the al-Shaitat must be considered a disbelieving group and must be fought, according to all the Islamic scholars, even if the group has not denied that sharia is right. Using this justification, Daesh brought in large military reinforcements from the vicinity of al-Hasakah province to the north of Deir al-Zour. These forces besieged the al-Shaitat tribe from all sides, turning the moment into a matter of life or death for the community. On the eastern bank of the Euphrates, opposite the areas of al-Shaitat, the Iranian and Assad militias simply watched and waited.

On August 5, 2014, Daesh declared the city of Abu Hamam a military zone and called on civilians to evacuate. It began shelling it with artillery and mortars, then began its incursions.

Five days later, the group took full control of the city along with the nearby villages of Gharanij and al-Kashkiyah. The members of the armed opposition withdrew and thousands of residents of the villages of southern al-Bukamal fled for fear of retaliation by Daesh.

1.015 Massacred

Estimates suggest that al-Shaitat sacrificed between one thousand and fifteen hundred martyrs to Daesh. Thousands were orphaned, villages and towns were burned, and properties were confiscated.

Syrian tribe finds ways to exact revenge on ISIS

The group also prevented people from returning and pursued the displaced, killing those they found in neighboring towns and villages.

Seeking Justice

Al-Shaitat continued to fight Daesh even after the massacre, with their young men joining the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the international coalition to fight Daesh.

The members of the al-Shaitat tribe played a key role in the fight against the group, especially on the frontlines of al-Baghuz battles and even before that, ultimately ending its military presence.

Tribal members continue to aid in intelligence operations that target members of Daesh. Others joined the forces of the regime and its factions in order to avenge the killers.

Moreover, the tribe is still paying the price of their opposition to Daesh. Even after the announcement of the military defeat of Daesh in Syria and Iraq, the organization has used its sleeper cells to destabilize the area through assassinations—targeting especially tribal leadership.

The eastern Deir Al-Zour countryside is seen as one of the most damaged areas in Deir Al-Zour.

For those who remained, many continue to deal with the effects of displacement and the ongoing pain of their loss.

Nevertheless, the tragedy also helped unite the families of the abducted persons in a search for the truth and justice. Families of the victims launched civil initiatives to document the massacre, telling their stories about the tragedy to the world.

Members of the tribe say that they aim “to unite the platforms of the families of those forcibly disappeared by Daesh in order to build the cause as a humanitarian, human rights, and political issue.”

They also seek to provide evidence of the injustices the Syrians were subjected to, and to challenge the stereotype that some have presented, which suggests that the countryside of Deir Al-Zour supported Daesh.

Indeed, the massacre and its aftermath emphasize how the al-Shaitat tribe opposed the existence of Daesh from the beginning and contributed significantly to breaking the group during the height of its power.

The rhetoric Daesh used to refer to those under its control can be misleading, as one of Daesh’s strategies was to force pledges of allegiance to it. Most villages and towns submitted to these pledges either out of fear or greed.

These forced pledges both aided in Daesh’s expansion and legitimized its practices within the group. Such ideology also allowed them to target those same people without the slightest sense of hesitation or remorse.

And for the families of the victims, they continue to pay a heavy price. Women now bear the burdens of supporting their families in a fragile economic situation alone after losing their sons and husbands in most areas of Deir al-Zour.

Most jobs available do not provide enough pay to feed hungry mouths at home. Meanwhile, the male members of families who have survived remain trapped in the cycle of violence, frequently forced to join the ranks of fighters operating in their areas to support their families.

Syria: Isis executes al-Sheitaat tribe teenager with bazooka in Deir al Zor…

Hundreds of victims’ families were not able to identify or bury the bodies of their loved ones. Every time a new mass grave is discovered, these families rush out to the site, hoping to finally identify their missing family members. When they do find them, they must relive the tragedy all over again, remaining trapped in a state of torturous waiting until another mass grave is discovered.

The potential for justice is just starting to emerge. In April 2022, a German court convicted a man called “Ra’ed Y” of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

According to the statement issued by the Public Prosecution, the accused participated in the massacres against the people of al-Shaitat.

The court documents also record harrowing records of his torture against three prisoners: reports state the accused handcuffed the victims, including a 13-year-old child, hung them to the ceiling, beat them with whips and cables, and administered electric shocks.

This trial served as an important step in convicting the perpetrators of the massacre. Nevertheless, complete justice for the victims remains distant, and these crimes must continue to be uncovered and their perpetrators pursued.

Every year on the ninth of August, the families of the victims commemorate the massacre, trying to draw the world’s attention to what happened nine years ago at the hands of Daesh, and hoping to know the fate of the missing, finding the bodies of the victims and giving them a decent burial.

On the seventh anniversary of the al-Shaitat massacre in 2021, the U.S. Embassy to Syria participated in the commemoration of the massacre through a post in Arabic and English, describing what happened as a massacre against innocent members of the al-Shaitat tribe, describing Daesh as barbaric, and recognizing the sacrifices paid by the tribe during the liberation of the region from Daesh…

The region is also in desperate need of infrastructure projects for the region, such as building hospitals and medical facilities, establishing laboratories, and creating job opportunities for young people. Water infrastructure for both drinking water and irrigation is especially vital, especially as they can limit the spread of cholera, which has become particularly dangerous in rural areas.

(Supporting civilian projects operating in those areas and involving the tribesmen in them will allow for the transition from military activity to civil activity, which many male members currently rely on to support their families. Support for memorials and commemorative activities that recognize the community’s contributions to fighting extremism and their sacrifice is likewise vital for morale, in addition to financial support for the massacre’s victims.

In short, the United States should not stop at an expression of passing sympathy for this area—there are humanitarian duties these allies should provide to al-Shaitat and its people by giving them justice for the brutal massacre they have suffered.

Note…Insert.. thefreeonline

The above pro US comments forget that although the US sponsored the local Kurdish led SDF coalition to expel Daesh/ISIS from Deir-Ez-Zor they held it under Donald Trump’s assertions ‘“We’re keeping the oil‘.

Although the US chosen oil company, Delta Crescent Energy LLC, was a scam and never exported any oil, the AANES supported Jazeera Oil Company does extract and refine some oil to support the finance of the local autonomous AANES govt and SDF which receive zero support from the central Assad govt and are blockaded and invaded by Turkey.. Most of the oil is sold to Damascus or Idlib at low prices.

Now in 2023 it is too late for the US to begin any social reconstruction in Deir Ez Zor, while continuing to bleed Syria under the draconian Caesar Act Sanctions. An anti US and anti Kurd campaign is underway across Syria, fomenting resentment among Deir Ez Zor tribes and the Arab media, which now continually paint the the SDF coalition as a US police force stealing Syrian oil.

The SDF makes promises to a delegation of Deir Ezzor intellectuals during a meeting held yesterday https://t.co/RNBbfhky7V— Omar Abu Layla (@OALD24) September 13, 2023

The SDF/AANES is a coalition of many progressive ethnic groups, including Arabs, and operates under a Constitution guaranteeing women’s equality, equal rights for all, cooperative industry and autonomy within Syria.

Despite its huge sacrifices in defeating ISIS it is fanatically opposed by Turkey, Iran, Israel, the Gulf States and Syrian central government itself.

It was therefore forced to accept protection from the US, which maintains a small force in the area under an anti-ISIS banner, while hypocritically supporting militias in Idlib an el Tanf with extreme ISIS similarities. Syria is now again in the Arab League and the Saudis are in BRICS.

The US has no future in Syria and the sooner the SDF kicks them out the better!… thefreeonline on 13th Aug 23

IN GEDENKEN AN LISA S.

Purely English

An exhibition dedicated to the 175th anniversary of Empress Maria Feodorovna entitled “About the Main Thing in My Life” opened at the State Archives of Russia .

The opening of the exhibition was dedicated to a story shown on Sunday in Dmitry Kiselev’s TV news program.
Purely English robbery
It shows photographs in which the Queen of England is depicted with jewelry from the treasured chest of Maria Feodorovna .

“ Here, ” says Dmitry Kiselev, “ Elizabeth II observes the changing of the guard of honor on Red Square during an official visit in 1994. On the bright blue coat is a brooch from the personal jewelry of Empress Maria Feodorovna.

A huge cabochon-cut Ceylon sapphire surrounded by dozens of diamonds and an exquisite pearl pendant. Maria Fedorovna adored sapphires. And Elizabeth II — this brooch. Here she is two years earlier. Everything is in tone.

Another sapphire brooch from Maria Feodorovna. Excellent work by Russian jewelers. And this is the mother of Elizabeth II, Queen Mary of Teck. On the neck is a four-row pearl choker with a huge sapphire.

Later, Princess Anne, the sister of Elizabeth II, also appears in it. Also from the collection of Maria Feodorovna.

Elizabeth II was especially fond of the Sapphire Cluster brooch. The source is the same. The cut of the giant sapphire of 130.5 carats is cushion cut, also known as antique.

Now the queen consort, the wife of King Charles III, Camilla, is wearing it. British style in all its glory , ”
Dmitry Kiselev concludes with caustic irony.

And without equivocation, the British always robbed everyone and were never shy about it. And even members of their royal dynasty loved and still flaunt the jewelry that they, like vultures, stole from the inheritance of the mother of the tragically deceased Nicholas II.

The exhibition presents more than 300 documents telling about the dramatic fate of the Danish princess Dagmar, who in Russia, under the name Maria Fedorovna, became the wife of Alexander III and the mother of the last Russian emperor Nicholas II.She had to survive the death of her fiancé, her husband, and then the tragedy of the 1917 revolution, and the death of her sons.Having left Russia on the English cruiser Marlborough, she lived out her life in mournful exile.

Meanwhile, the Danish princess turned out to be a worthy wife of the emperor; she sincerely fell in love with Russia. And in St. Petersburg she was revered and adored. During the First World War, Maria Fedorovna took an active part in managing the Red Cross Society and providing assistance to the Russian army.

But as a woman, she had a small weakness — a love of jewelry. That’s why she was always given jewelry for all family and religious holidays. Maria Feodorovna carefully kept them in a special box-casket, which she always kept with her.

Over the 52 years of living in Russia, a large amount of jewelry has accumulated. Their number, in addition to brooches, necklaces, and diamond collars, included several eggs from the famous jeweler Carl Faberge, as well as strings of black pearls, many diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies, rare Byzantine jewelry, tiaras, sets of pink diamonds, etc. . No one knew the exact contents of her jewelry chest.

The empress managed to save most of her personal jewelry, including real masterpieces of jewelry, from the revolution and take it with her to England.

They meant much more to Maria Fedorovna than just jewelry — it was the history of her and her family.

These were her personal belongings, and not jewelry that belonged to the Romanov imperial house.

However, in Europe they knew about what Maria Fedorovna had brought with her, and a real hunt began for her casket, because no one had such jewelry.

The Danish King Christian X and the English King George V laid claim to the jewels. It was rumored that when Maria Feodorovna, already in London, put on an emerald necklace to meet her sister and King George, a greedy sparkle appeared in their eyes…

Finding herself in exile, at first Maria Feodorovna lived with Christian X. She was given a small corner in the palace and minimal maintenance.

After some time, the former empress with her daughters and servants moved to the small villa Vidor, which Maria Feodorovna bought back in 1904 in half with her older sister Alexandra.

Maria Feodorovna was an empress without an empire; she was not officially received anywhere. Even her own nephew, Alexandra’s son, King George V, did not receive her at Buckingham Palace.

George V generally betrayed all his Russian relatives. The cousins - he and Nicholas II — looked alike, like twins, and had been friends since childhood. But after the renunciation, there was no fraternal help.

Following parliament’s lead, George responded that he “no longer insists on Nicholas moving” to England. As a result, Nicholas II and his entire family were mercilessly shot by the Bolsheviks.

But he did not hesitate to pocket the treasures that Maria Fedorovna brought with her. He urged his aunt to place the jewels in a bank safe in London.

He also promised to monitor the preparation and compliance with the terms of sale. But Maria Feodorovna refused to sell her jewelry. Although she had a hard time abroad.

With the outbreak of the war, Nicholas II spent all his personal funds stored in French banks on the Russian army. And the money in German banks was frozen, and later completely devalued.

So by 1918, the Romanov family had no money. In connection with this, many relatives asked Maria Fedorovna to sell or pawn jewelry.

According to Maria Fedorovna’s will, all the treasures were to go to her daughters, Olga and Ksenia. At the beginning of October 1928, Maria Fedorovna became seriously ill and soon died.Literally a day after the funeral, Christian X arrived at Villa Vidor. The purpose of his visit was the casket of Maria Feodorovna. He demanded that Olga Alexandrovna show the jewelry.

But they disappeared…

After the fall of the Russian monarchy, the English royal court was the main client for the purchase of confiscated jewelry, which was sold by the Bolsheviks in the hope of raising money for the industrialization of Russia. They bought jewelry for next to nothing.

An unspoken agreement was concluded between jewelers in Europe — to minimize as much as possible the cost of all jewelry that poured into Western markets from Soviet Russia and from Russian immigrants .

Treasures of the highest Russian nobility were sometimes put up at auctions. Sometimes it’s as simple as a piece of jewelry. It is known, for example, that the English antique dealer Norman Weiss bought 9 kilograms of jewelry and stones, spending 50,000 pounds sterling (only 1.5 million rubles at the exchange rate of that time).

Weis resold them to Christie’s auction house. These jewels were divided into 124 lots and put up for auction in March 1927.

One of the intermediaries in the sale was Pyotr Lvovich Bark, the last Minister of Finance of Tsarist Russia. After 1917 he settled in London and was appointed there as adviser to the governor of the Bank of England.

As the official envoy of the English king, he hastily arrived at the Empress’s funeral.

As Minister of Finance, Barck was well acquainted with the Grand Duchesses Olga and Xenia. The English king apparently believed that this acquaintance would help Bark convince the princesses to sell the box.

Soon the casket was opened in the presence of Xenia and members of the English royal family. The jewelry was appraised by Hennel and Sons.

A representative of the company offered 100 thousand pounds as security for the imperial treasures, which, based on jewelry practice, was no more than 10-15% of the amount for which the jewelry could be sold.

That is, they cost at least 700 thousand, which in terms of current exchange rates is approximately 12 million pounds sterling.

They refused the services of the jeweler, saying that no one was going to sell the jewelry at auction.

As a result, the sisters were allegedly paid 100 thousand pounds: Ksenia — 60, and Olga — 40.

That is, the British simply brazenly robbed them. Soon, at one of the receptions, Bark’s wife was wearing an emerald bracelet with diamonds. When she was asked about the origin of the thing, she did not deny that it belonged to the imperial collection, saying evasively: “This is the memory of our dear empress.”

Bark himself was elevated to knighthood by decree of George V and awarded the order.

And the most valuable items from the collection ended up in the possession of the Queen of England, and after her death they were decorations for numerous ladies of the Windsor dynasty.

The U.S. And UK Are Getting Coal Cocked

By Duggan Flanakin ~

Some Western nations appear to be waking up to the reality that they are being duped – that Net Zero is a fabrication of their own egos that other nations hardly take seriously. Just don’t count on the world’s two leading English-speaking nations, or the plutocrats in Paris, Geneva, and Davos, to follow suit. They still talk as if they still control the unfolding of world affairs.

Just last year, for example, a German company demolished an aging wind farm to expand a coal mine. To the BBC’s chagrin, Australia, too, continues to rely on its coal industry for much-needed jobs and revenues.

Yet the modern-day utopians in the U.S. and the UK still cling to the myth that emerging superpower nations like China, India, and Russia will bow before the World Economic Forum and United Nations grifters.

The BBC calls Australia “a stark outlier … in a world racing to reduce pollution.” They squawk that China, “along with G7 rich nations,” has made the Net Zero by 2050 pledge – despite watching China and many other nations dramatically increase their reliance on coal energy.

The BBC ignores the fact that global coal consumption has nearly doubled since 1998. Consumption jumped from 94.9 exajoules (3.24 billion tonnes) in 1998 to 150.4 exajoules 5.15 billion tonnes) in 2010 to a record high 8 billion tonnes in 2022.

China has doubled consumption from 1.5 billion tonnes in 2002 to more than 3 billion tonnes in 2022 (officially, but surely higher now). Coal consumption in India has skyrocketed, rising from 240 million tonnes in 2007 to 906 million tonnes in 2021.

China in the first half of 2023 started construction on 37 gigawatts of new coal power capacity, issued permits for another 52 GW, and announced the revival of 49 GW. China now has added 243 GW of new coal power, increasing capacity by up to 33% since January 2022.

India in 2022 reopened more than 100 coal mines to meet the growing demand for coal energy. Again this year India stepped up coal production to stop outages caused by lower hydropower output due to an ongoing drought. India has failed to meet its Paris Agreement goals for renewable energy, as coal in August provided three-quarters of the nation’s electricity.

Meanwhile, the U.S. consumed just 495 million tonnes of coal in 2021, down from a record 1,127 million tonnes in 2007. The major decrease began with President Obama’s pledge to bankrupt the U.S. coal industry. As House Natural Resources Committee chair Rep. Doc Hastings (R, WA) said in 2012, Obama “tried at every turn to make that goal a reality.”

As Hastings put it, the Obama Administration rescinded the 2008 Stream Buffer Zone Rule, entered into a consent agreement with environmental groups spent millions of taxpayer dollars to rewrite the rule, attempted to manipulate data to conceal its economic impact, and hid the final rule from the public until after the 2012 election.

China and India were exempted from having to cut carbon dioxide emissions both under the failed 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the 2016 Paris Agreement.  Grist claimed it was only fair for “the fattest man at the table” to be lenient with “hungry” nations “upon realizing that the food is running out.”

While the U.S. Senate rejected the Kyoto Protocol, the Senate never got to vote on the Paris Agreement. President Biden has doubled down on Obama’s pledge to make coal as much a pariah in the U.S. as it is in the UK.

Just a year ago, President Biden claimed coal plants in the U.S. were “too expensive to operate” – though he did not add, “because of President Obama’s egregious regulations.” He promised that “we’re going to be shutting these plants down all across America” and rely on increasingly expensive, intermittent wind and solar electricity.

U.S. coal production is also being hindered as Western U.S. ports seek to ban coal exports. Just since 2010, nine proposals that would have added 133 million tonnes of annual coal-handling capacity in the Pacific Northwest have been canceled. This has dealt major blows to coal mining operations and the economies in states like Utah, Montana, and Wyoming.

Just last year, the city of Oakland blocked a plan to ship low-sulfur Utah coal to Japan via a bulk terminal on the San Francisco Bay. The Utah Legislature had set aside $53 million to invest in terminal development. Utah coal is still shipped from three other California ports despite growing local opposition to any handling of coal.

To fill the void, Russia is ramping up coal production, with a goal of 668 million tonnes per year by 2035 – up from 441 million tonnes in 2019. Coal production had already risen 30% from 2011 to 2021.

A significant project upgrading operations at the 2.2 billion tonne deposit of coal in the Siberian town of Elga, which is covered by snow up to 9 months a year. According to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, “Growth prospects are primarily related to the growing market of the Asia-Pacific region.”

Indonesia, on pace to be the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2045, is building 19 gigawatts of new coal plant capacity, two-thirds of which will power nickel, cobalt, and aluminum smelters. The Jakarta government plans to turn Indonesia into a manufacturing hub for electric vehicles and batteries.

Coal today accounts for 43% of Indonesia’s grid electricity, but Indonesia is also one of the world’s leading coal exporters. The new plants will bump national capacity by a third to nearly 60 GW over a short time frame.

U.S. policy, by contrast, is aimed at shuttering coal plants, banning natural gas even for home appliances, and heavily subsidizing wind and solar projects to meet Net Zero decarbonization goals that Congress has never approved. As a result, the nationwide average electricity price rose 11% from 2021 to 2022. Electricity bills in 2023 are rising as much as 40%.

Similarly, household electricity prices in the UK doubled in the past decade despite the government setting a tariff cap to protect consumers. Last summer, electricity prices peaked at £363.7 per megawatt-hour.

A century ago, the British lion was the world’s leading economy. The Suez Crisis of 1956, it is said, confirmed Britain’s decline as a global power, and the transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997 literally buried the British Empire.

The U.S. secured its position as the world leader after World War II but began a long decline just 15 years later with the Vietnam War. Today, the inheritors of U.S. policy – many from the Vietnam era – are making the withdrawal from Afghanistan (despite the pretenses of power in the Russia-Ukraine war) the sign of the end of the American empire.

How long will it be before the (likely) fall of Taiwan buries the remnants of American power?

How quickly can an empire collapse from its own rot?

Why have the U.S. and the UK backed away from fossil fuels even as other nations doubled down to upgrade their own economies with coal? One might believe that Western leaders just want to transfer their guilt for mismanaging their power by punishing the citizens who let them do it.
