The deal has not been finalized, and the prisoners may not arrive home soon, but the deal has been placed into motion as Iran has transferred the five prisoners to house arrest, some having been transferred out of the infamous Evin prison in Tehran.
Qatar, Oman and Switzerland played a role in the deal, and when it finalizes, $6 billion dollars will be converted to Euros in a South Korean bank account which holds frozen Iranian funds. After the U.S. dollars are converted to Euros, they will then be transferred to a bank in Qatar which will allow Iranian access, but the account will be restricted for food and humanitarian needs.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated since President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program will be exclusively peaceful which was signed July 14, 2015. Trump’s move was an appeasement to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has long threatened a military attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. With Israel now facing civil war over domestic issues, Netanyahu still threatens an attack to diffuse opposition to his government.
After taking office, President Biden’s administration has sought to come to a new agreement with Iran to curb the enrichment of uranium. However, the negotiations have failed to produce results. Experts have said this latest prisoner swap may be one small step in re-igniting the waning diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran.
Trump’s decision to leave the JCPOA in 2018 has allowed Iran to escalate its enrichment of uranium to 60% purity, which is short of the 90% needed to produce a nuclear weapon.
Biden has asked Iran to decrease its enrichment of uranium, hand over several American prisoners, pull back its support for Russia, and avoid targeting U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East. Iran has agreed in principle to stop stockpiling uranium enriched to 60%, and is now in the process of a prisoner swap.
Previously, Iran has cooperated with UN nuclear inspectors and provided some information to them concerning past nuclear activities in question. A report by the UN inspectors is expected by the end of this month, perhaps coinciding with the prisoner swap.
Siamak Namazi, 51, Emad Shargi, 58, and Morad Tahbaz, 67, are three of the five in the proposed prisoner swap. The name of the fourth and fifth U.S. citizen has not been made public.
Iran’s mission to the UN said, “As part of a humanitarian cooperation agreement mediated by a third-party government, Iran and the U.S. have agreed to reciprocally release and pardon five prisoners. The transfer of these prisoners to out of prison marks a significant initial step in the implementation of this agreement.”
Tehran scaled back its nuclear program in 2015 in exchange for lifting of international sanctions, but after Trump’s disastrous break with the deal in 2018, he piled on sanctions under his ‘maximum pressure’ policy, and Biden has also continued to impose new sanctions on Iran.

Netanyahu set two main goals for his administration. Awake and aware, they went right to work building new systems, creating tools like VPNs, dedicated servers, and peer-to-peer encryption that could last until the race for quantum computing overrode their capabilities, buying the privacy-minded digital sleuths time to build stronger systems against what they saw as inevitable creeping digital tyranny.
To be free from their system of entrapment, to liberate oneself from this globally interconnected digital gulag requires the conscious and continuous pursuit of privacy. One must desire privacy, and actively seek it. The ultimate gateway to privacy online is anonymity.
The concept of privacy is not dead, as some would like to proclaim for their own nefarious agenda. It is very much alive and well in the conscious digital consumer who knows with each touch of a screen they are merely providing the reserve data labor collected by powerful enemies that may one day use it all against them, either through extortion or in a reinvented world where the social rituals and digital norms of the past are suddenly rendered punishable crimes.
They take all precautions necessary to remain private: de-googling phones and tablets, using open source software, never providing their real name to any tech service, never using any service that they know can and will be used against them in the future, darkening out cameras, and deactivating microphones that are always on and always listening to background conversations to tailor advertising impressions based on those private background conversations.
We now live in a world where people voluntarily bug their homes with devices that begin with the word “smart”. They bug their cars, and their jeans pockets with devices that forty years ago would have made the work of Stasi foot soldiers effortless in the DDR.

People with tremendous wealth usually do not seek out the spotlight. People who are not financially secure but want to increase their wealth, and need their face and embodied being as the sales tool to facilitate that wealth increase are often not as well off as they perform for their digital swarm.
One would think that kind of money would have permitted Tate a life of privacy, anonymity, and security wherever he wanted. Was seeking digital celebrity, and the attention of others really worth getting his name moved to the top of the list for digital transgressors and 90 days in a Romanian jail cell?
His cult of followers would certainly defend him as a courageous figure with the guts to fight the powers that be, for helping young men with no father figures against ubiquitous feminization and celebrated misandry.
Yet he couldn’t even anticipate the effect his own words and actions online would have against him. He didn’t even appear to know who or what those powers were capable of if he crossed one of their lines—mocking an autistic Swedish marionette. He assumed incorrectly, that his presumed innocence really mattered to Romanian authorities.
Seeking privacy is increasingly frowned upon by corporate and state actors who must operate under the pre-crime assumption that those who seek privacy do so with the intention of concealing their felonious behavior.
Governments and their corporate partners have been so successful in programming the minds of their subjects to repeat this talking point that any behavior that cannot be tracked and traced is met with suspicion and innuendo by their armies of indoctrinated foot soldiers.
To request to be paid in cash is simply one of many examples. In transacting between citizens (non-business entities) the request is often followed by a question the system has programmed them to reflexively respond with: Why does this person want cash? What are they hiding?

Attitudes must flourish that we are all inextricably linked by the rights of our neighbors or fellow digital users, regardless of our opinions of theirs. If the rights of one man can be suspended, then there are no rights for any man.

He appealed to Elon Musk to ban anonymous accounts when he took over Twitter. Musk knows better. If only verified users were permitted it would ruin the platform overnight.

Armées de simples bâtons, des équipes de brigades de lutte contre les stupéfiants parcourent le pays pour faire ce que l’armée américaine n’a jamais pu faire : couper les champs de pavot en Afghanistan.
Le gouvernement taliban d’Afghanistan – pays qui produisait jusqu’à récemment 90 % de l’héroïne mondiale – a considérablement réduit la culture de l’opium dans l’ensemble du pays. Des sources occidentales estiment que cette réduction peut atteindre 99 % dans certaines provinces. Cela soulève de sérieuses questions quant au sérieux des efforts d’éradication de la drogue déployés par les États-Unis dans le pays au cours des 20 dernières années. De plus, alors que les réserves mondiales d’héroïne se tarissent, les experts déclarent à MintPress News qu’ils craignent que cela n’entraîne une augmentation de l’utilisation du fentanyl – une drogue des dizaines de fois plus puissante que l’héroïne qui tue déjà plus de 100 000 Américains chaque année.
Les Talibans font ce que les États-Unis n’ont pas fait
Elle a déjà été qualifiée d ‘«effort de lutte contre les stupéfiants le plus réussi de l’histoire de l’humanité». Armées de simples bâtons, des équipes de brigades de lutte contre les stupéfiants parcourent le pays pour couper les champs de pavot de l’Afghanistan.
En avril de l’année dernière, le gouvernement taliban au pouvoir a annoncé l’interdiction de la culture du pavot, invoquant à la fois ses fortes convictions religieuses et les coûts sociaux extrêmement néfastes que l’héroïne et d’autres opioïdes – dérivés de la sève du pavot – ont engendrés dans tout l’Afghanistan.
Il n’y a pas eu que de l’esbroufe. De nouvelles recherches menées par la société de données géospatiales Alcis suggèrent que la production de pavot a déjà chuté d’environ 80 % depuis l’année dernière. En effet, l’imagerie satellite montre que dans la province de Helmand, la région qui produit plus de la moitié de la récolte, la production de pavot a chuté d’un pourcentage stupéfiant de 99 %. Il y a 12 mois à peine, les champs de pavot dominaient. Mais Alcis estime qu’il y a aujourd’hui moins de 1 000 hectares de pavot dans la province d’Helmand.
Au lieu de cela, les agriculteurs plantent du blé, ce qui permet d’éviter le pire de la famine que les sanctions américaines ont contribué à créer. L’Afghanistan reste toutefois dans une situation périlleuse, les Nations Unies estimant que six millions de personnes sont proches de la famine.
Les données d’Alcis montrent que la majorité des agriculteurs afghans sont passés de la culture du pavot à celle du blé en une seule année.
Les Talibans ont attendu 2022 pour imposer l’interdiction tant attendue, afin de ne pas interférer avec la saison de culture. Cela aurait provoqué des troubles au sein de la population rurale en éradiquant une récolte que les agriculteurs avaient mis des mois à cultiver. Entre 2020 et fin 2022, le prix de l’opium sur les marchés locaux a augmenté de 700 %. Pourtant, compte tenu de l’insistance des talibans – et de leur efficacité en matière d’éradication -, rares sont ceux qui ont été tentés de planter du pavot.
L’interdiction du pavot s’est accompagnée d’une campagne similaire contre l’industrie de la méthamphétamine, le gouvernement s’attaquant aux cultures d’éphédra et fermant des laboratoires d’éphédrine dans tout le pays.
Une catastrophe imminente
L’Afghanistan produit près de 90 % de l’héroïne mondiale. L’éradication de la culture de l’opium aura donc de profondes conséquences sur la consommation de drogues dans le monde entier. Les experts interrogés par MintPress ont averti qu’une pénurie d’héroïne entraînerait probablement une hausse considérable de la consommation d’opioïdes synthétiques tels que le fentanyl, une drogue que le Centre de contrôle des maladies estime être 50 fois plus puissante et qui est responsable de la mort de plus de 100 000 Américains chaque année.
«Il est important de tenir compte des périodes passées de pénurie d’héroïne et de l’impact qu’elles ont eu sur le marché européen de la drogue», a déclaré l’Observatoire européen des drogues et des toxicomanies (OEDT) à MintPress, avant d’ajouter : «Il est important de tenir compte des périodes passées de pénurie d’héroïne et de leur impact sur le marché européen de la drogue»
L’expérience des périodes précédentes de réduction de l’offre d’héroïne dans l’Union européenne suggère que cela peut entraîner des changements dans les schémas d’offre et de consommation de drogues. Il peut s’agir notamment d’une augmentation des taux de polyconsommation chez les consommateurs d’héroïne. Le remplacement de l’héroïne par des opioïdes synthétiques plus nocifs, y compris le fentanyl et ses dérivés et de nouveaux opioïdes benzimidazoles puissants, peut constituer un risque supplémentaire pour les consommateurs existants.
En d’autres termes, si l’héroïne n’est plus disponible, les consommateurs se tourneront vers des formes synthétiques de la drogue beaucoup plus mortelles. Un rapport des Nations Unies de 2022 est arrivé à une conclusion similaire, notant que la répression de la production d’héroïne pourrait conduire au «remplacement de l’héroïne ou de l’opium par d’autres substances […] telles que le fentanyl et ses analogues».
«Il y a un danger au sens large : si l’on retire toute l’héroïne du marché, les gens vont se tourner vers d’autres produits», a déclaré Matthew Hoh à MintPress. M. Hoh est un ancien fonctionnaire du département d’État qui a démissionné de son poste dans la province de Zabul, en Afghanistan, en 2009. «Mais la réponse ne devrait pas être de réinvestir l’Afghanistan, de le réoccuper et de remettre les barons de la drogue au pouvoir, ce qui est essentiellement ce que les gens impliquent lorsqu’ils déplorent les conséquences de l’arrêt du commerce de la drogue par les talibans», a ajouté M. Hoh. «La plupart des gens qui parlent ainsi et qui s’inquiètent à voix haute sont des gens qui veulent trouver une raison pour que les États-Unis aillent opérer un changement de régime en Afghanistan.»
Les sources américaines n’ont pas manqué de s’inquiéter. «La revue Foreign Policya écrit sur «la façon dont la ‘guerre contre la drogue’ des talibans pourrait se retourner contre eux» ; la Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, financée par le gouvernement américain, a affirmé que les Talibans fermaient les yeux sur la production d’opium, malgré l’interdiction officielle. L’Institut de la paix des États-Unis, une institution créée par le Congrès qui «se consacre à la proposition qu’un monde sans conflit violent est possible», a déclaré catégoriquement que «l’interdiction réussie de l’opium par les Talibans est mauvaise pour les Afghans et pour le monde».
Cette catastrophe imminente ne se produira toutefois pas immédiatement. Il existe encore d’importants stocks de drogues le long des itinéraires de trafic. Comme l’a déclaré l’OEDT à MintPress:
«Il peut s’écouler plus de 12 mois avant que la récolte d’opium n’apparaisse sur le marché européen de la drogue au détail sous forme d’héroïne – il est donc trop tôt pour prédire, à ce stade, l’impact futur de l’interdiction de la culture sur la disponibilité de l’héroïne en Europe. Néanmoins, si l’interdiction de la culture de l’opium est appliquée et maintenue, elle pourrait avoir un impact significatif sur la disponibilité de l’héroïne en Europe en 2024 ou 2025».
Pourtant, rien n’indique que les Talibans ne soient pas sérieux dans leur volonté d’éradiquer cette culture, ce qui laisse présager une pénurie d’héroïne.
Une tentative similaire d’élimination de la drogue par les Talibans a eu lieu en 2000, la dernière année complète où ils étaient au pouvoir. Elle a été extraordinairement réussie, la réduction de la production d’opium passant de 4 600 tonnes à 185 tonnes seulement. À l’époque, il a fallu environ 18 mois pour que les conséquences se fassent sentir en Occident. Au Royaume-Uni, la pureté moyenne de l’héroïne est passée de 55 % à 34 %, tandis que dans les États baltes d’Estonie, de Lettonie et de Lituanie, l’héroïne a été largement remplacée par le fentanyl. Toutefois, dès l’invasion des États-Unis en 2001, la culture du pavot a retrouvé son niveau antérieur et la chaîne d’approvisionnement a repris.
Complicité des États-Unis dans le trafic de drogue en Afghanistan
«La campagne réussie des Talibans pour éradiquer la production de drogue a jeté un doute sur l’efficacité des efforts déployés par les Américains pour parvenir au même résultat. Cela amène à se demander ce que nous avons réellement accompli là-bas», a fait remarquer M. Hoh, en soulignant que «les Talibans sont en train de se débarrasser de la drogue» :
«Cela remet en cause l’une des prémisses fondamentales de ces guerres : la prétendue association entre les Talibans et le trafic de drogue – un concept de lien narco-terroriste. Toutefois, cette notion est fallacieuse. En réalité, l’Afghanistan est à l’origine de 80 à 90 % de l’offre mondiale d’opiacés illicites. Les principaux responsables de ce commerce étaient le gouvernement et l’armée afghans, des entités que nous avons maintenues au pouvoir».

Suzanna Reiss, universitaire à l’Université d’Hawaï à Manoa et auteur de «We Sell Drugs : The Alchemy of U.S. Empire», a fait preuve d’un point de vue encore plus cynique sur les efforts américains de lutte contre les stupéfiants, comme elle l’a indiqué à MintPress :
«Les États-Unis n’ont jamais vraiment cherché à réduire le trafic de drogue en Afghanistan (ou ailleurs d’ailleurs). Toute rhétorique noble mise à part, les États-Unis ont été heureux de travailler avec les trafiquants de drogue si cela permettait de promouvoir certains intérêts géopolitiques (et l’ont d’ailleurs fait, ou du moins ont fermé sciemment les yeux, lorsque des groupes comme l’Alliance du Nord s’appuyaient sur la drogue pour financer leur mouvement politique contre le régime)».
La transformation de l’Afghanistan en un narco-État de premier plan doit beaucoup aux actions de Washington. Dans les années 1970, la culture du pavot était relativement limitée. Toutefois, le vent a tourné en 1979 avec le lancement de l’opération Cyclone, une injection massive de fonds dans les factions moudjahidines afghanes visant à épuiser l’armée soviétique et à mettre fin à sa présence en Afghanistan. Les États-Unis ont versé des milliards aux insurgés, mais leurs besoins financiers n’ont pas été satisfaits. Les moudjahidines se sont donc lancés dans le commerce illicite de la drogue. Au terme de l’opération Cyclone, la production d’opium en Afghanistan avait été multipliée par vingt. Le professeur Alfred McCoy, auteur acclamé de «The Politics of Heroin : CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade», a déclaré à MintPress qu’environ 75 % de la production illégale d’opium de la planète provenait désormais d’Afghanistan, et qu’une grande partie des recettes était reversée à des factions rebelles soutenues par les États-Unis.
La crise des opioïdes : Une catastrophe imminente
La crise des opioïdes est la pire épidémie de toxicomanie de l’histoire des États-Unis. Au début de l’année, le secrétaire du ministère de la sécurité intérieure, Alejandro Mayorkas, a décrit le problème du fentanyl aux États-Unis comme «le plus grand défi auquel nous sommes confrontés en tant que pays». Près de 110 000 Américains sont morts d’une overdose en 2021, le fentanyl étant de loin la principale cause. Entre 2015 et 2021, l’Institut national de la santé a enregistré une multiplication par près de 7,5 des décès par overdose. La revue médicale The Lancetprévoit que 1,2 million d’Américains mourront d’une overdose d’opioïdes d’ici 2029.
Les autorités américaines accusent les cartels mexicains de faire passer l’antidouleur synthétique par la frontière sud et la Chine de produire les produits chimiques nécessaires à la fabrication de la drogue.
Les Américains blancs sont plus susceptibles de faire un usage abusif de ces types de drogues que les autres races. Les adultes âgés de 35 à 44 ans enregistrent les taux de mortalité les plus élevés, bien que les décès chez les plus jeunes soient en augmentation. L’Amérique rurale a été particulièrement touchée ; une étude réalisée en 2017 par le National Farmers Union et l’American Farm Bureau Federation a révélé que 74 % des agriculteurs ont été directement touchés par l’épidémie d’opioïdes. La Virginie-Occidentale et le Tennessee sont les États les plus touchés.
Pour l’écrivain Chris Hedges, originaire du Maine rural, la crise du fentanyl est un exemple de l’une des nombreuses «maladies du désespoir» dont souffrent les États-Unis. Selon lui, elle est née d’un monde en décomposition où les opportunités, qui confèrent statut, estime de soi et dignité, se sont taries pour la plupart des Américains. Ils sont l’expression d’un désespoir et d’une morbidité aigus. En substance, lorsque le rêve américain s’est évanoui, il a été remplacé par un cauchemar américain. Le fait que les hommes blancs soient les premières victimes de ces maladies du désespoir est une conséquence ironique de notre système injuste. Comme l’explique Hedges :
«Les hommes blancs, plus facilement séduits par le mythe du rêve américain que les personnes de couleur qui comprennent à quel point le système capitaliste leur est défavorable, souffrent souvent d’un sentiment d’échec et de trahison, dans de nombreux cas lorsqu’ils sont dans la force de l’âge. Ils s’attendent, en raison des notions de suprématie blanche et des platitudes capitalistes sur le travail acharné menant à l’avancement, à être en pleine ascension. Ils croient au succès».
En ce sens, il est important de replacer la crise de la dépendance aux opioïdes dans le contexte plus large du déclin américain, où les opportunités de réussite et de bonheur sont plus rares et plus éloignées que jamais, plutôt que de l’attribuer à des individus. Comme l’écrit leLancet : «Les approches punitives et stigmatisantes doivent cesser. La dépendance n’est pas une faute morale. Il s’agit d’un état pathologique qui constitue une menace constante pour la santé».
Un problème exclusivement américain
Près de 10 millions d’Américains font un usage abusif d’opioïdes sur ordonnance chaque année, à un rythme bien supérieur à celui des pays développés comparables. Les décès par surdose d’opioïdes aux États-Unis sont dix fois plus fréquents par habitant qu’en Allemagne et plus de vingt fois plus fréquents en Italie, par exemple.
Cela est dû en grande partie au système de santé à but lucratif des États-Unis. Les compagnies d’assurance privées américaines sont beaucoup plus enclines à prescrire des médicaments et des pilules que des thérapies plus coûteuses qui s’attaquent à la racine du problème à l’origine de l’addiction. C ‘est pourquoi la crise des opioïdes est communément qualifiée de «problème exclusivement américain».
Si les médecins américains sont beaucoup plus enclins à administrer des analgésiques exceptionnellement puissants que leurs homologues européens, c’est en partie parce qu’ils ont fait l’objet d’une campagne de marketing hyper-agressive de la part de Purdue Pharma, fabricant du puissant opioïde OxyContin. Purdue a lancé l’OxyContin en 1996 et ses agents ont envahi les cabinets médicaux pour promouvoir le nouveau «médicament miracle».

Pourtant, procès après procès, l’entreprise a été accusée de mentir sur l’efficacité et la dépendance de l’OxyContin, un médicament qui a rendu d’innombrables Américains dépendants des opioïdes. Et lorsque les opioïdes sur ordonnance, légaux mais incroyablement addictifs, se sont taris, les Américains se sont tournés vers des substances illicites comme l’héroïne et le fentanyl pour les remplacer.
Les propriétaires de Purdue Pharma, la famille Sackler, ont régulièrementétédécrits comme la famille la plus diabolique d’Amérique, beaucoup leur imputant la responsabilité des centaines de milliers de décès par overdose. En 2019, sous le poids de milliers de poursuites judiciaires, Purdue Pharma a déposé son bilan. Un an plus tard, elle a plaidé coupable à des accusations criminelles concernant la mauvaise commercialisation de l’OxyContin.
Néanmoins, les Sackler se sont enrichis comme des bandits grâce à leurs actions. Même après avoir été contraints l’année dernière de verser près de 6 milliards de dollars en espèces aux victimes de la crise des opioïdes, ils restent l’une des familles les plus riches du monde et ont refusé de s’excuser pour leur rôle dans la construction d’un empire de la douleur qui a causé des centaines de milliers de morts.
Au lieu de cela, la famille a tenté de blanchir son image par la philanthropie, en parrainant un grand nombre d’institutions artistiques et culturelles parmi les plus prestigieuses du monde. Il s’agit notamment du musée Guggenheim et du Metropolitan Museum of Art à New York, de l’université de Yale, du British Museum et de la Royal Academy à Londres.
Les anciens combattants constituent l’un des groupes les plus touchés par les opioïdes tels que l’OxyContin, l’héroïne et le fentanyl. Selon les National Institutes of Health, les anciens combattants sont deux fois plus susceptibles de mourir d’une overdose que le reste de la population. La bureaucratie est l’une des raisons de ce phénomène. «Au cours des dernières décennies, l’administration des vétérans a fait du très mauvais travail en matière de gestion de la douleur, en particulier en ce qui concerne le recours aux opioïdes», a déclaré M. Hoh, un ancien marine, à MintPress, précisant que l’administration des vétérans prescrivait des opioïdes dangereux à un taux plus élevé que les autres organismes de santé.
Les anciens soldats doivent souvent faire face à des douleurs chroniques et à des lésions cérébrales. M. Hoh note qu’environ un quart de million de vétérans d’Afghanistan et d’Irak souffrent de lésions cérébrales traumatiques. À cela s’ajoutent les profondes lésions morales dont beaucoup ont souffert – des lésions qui ne sont généralement pas visibles. Comme l’a fait remarquer Hoh :
«Les vétérans se tournent vers [des opioïdes comme le fentanyl] pour faire face aux conséquences mentales, émotionnelles et spirituelles de la guerre. Ils les utilisent pour apaiser leur détresse, essayer de trouver un certain soulagement, échapper à la dépression et faire face aux démons qui reviennent chez les vétérans qui ont participé à ces guerres».
Ainsi, si le programme d’éradication de l’opium des talibans se poursuit, il pourrait déclencher une crise du fentanyl qui pourrait tuer plus d’Américains que ne l’a fait l’occupation qui a duré 20 ans.
Société brisée
Si les maladies du désespoir sont courantes aux États-Unis, elles sévissent en Afghanistan même. Un rapport mondial publié en mars a révélé que les Afghans sont de loin les personnes les plus malheureuses de la planète. Les Afghans évaluent leur vie à 1,8 sur 10, ce qui les place en avant-dernière position, loin derrière les Finlandais (7,8 sur 10).
La dépendance à l’opium en Afghanistan est hors de contrôle, avec environ 9 % de la population adulte (et un nombre important d’enfants) dépendants. Entre 2005 et 2015, le nombre de toxicomanes adultes est passé de 900 000 à 2,4 millions, selon les Nations unies, qui estiment que près d’un foyer sur trois est directement touché par la toxicomanie. L’opium étant fréquemment injecté, les maladies transmises par le sang, comme le VIH, sont également courantes.
Le problème des opioïdes s’est également étendu aux pays voisins, tels que l’Iran et le Pakistan. Un rapport des Nations unies de 2013 estimait que près de 2,5 millions de Pakistanais consommaient des opioïdes, dont 11 % dans la province de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, au nord-ouest du pays. Environ 700 personnes meurent chaque jour d’overdoses.
L’Empire de la drogue
Compte tenu de leur histoire, il est peut-être compréhensible que les pays asiatiques aient généralement pris des mesures beaucoup plus autoritaires pour lutter contre les problèmes de toxicomanie. Pendant des siècles, l’utilisation du commerce illégal de la drogue pour promouvoir des objectifs impériaux a été une tactique occidentale courante. Dans les années 1940 et 1950, les Français ont utilisé les cultures d’opium dans la région du «Triangle d’or» en Asie du Sud-Est afin de contrer le mouvement d’indépendance vietnamien en plein essor.
Un siècle auparavant, les Britanniques avaient utilisé l’opium pour écraser et conquérir une grande partie de la Chine. La soif insatiable de la Grande-Bretagne pour le thé chinois commençait à mettre le pays en faillite, car la Chine n’acceptait que de l’or ou de l’argent en échange. Les Britanniques ont donc utilisé la puissance de leur marine pour forcer la Chine à leur céder Hong Kong. De là, ils ont inondé la Chine continentale d’opium cultivé en Asie du Sud (y compris en Afghanistan).
Les effets de la guerre de l’opium ont été stupéfiants. En 1880, les Britanniques inondaient la Chine de plus de 6 500 tonnes d’opium par an, soit l’équivalent de plusieurs milliards de doses. La société chinoise s’est effondrée, incapable de faire face aux bouleversements sociaux et économiques que des millions d’opiomanes ont entraînés à l’échelle de l’empire. Aujourd’hui, les Chinois continuent d’appeler cette période le “siècle de l’humiliation”.
Pendant ce temps, en Asie du Sud, les Britanniques forcent les agriculteurs à planter des champs de pavot au lieu de cultures comestibles, provoquant des vagues de famines gigantesques, jamais vues auparavant ni depuis.
Dans les années 1980, en Amérique centrale, les États-Unis ont vendu des armes à l’Iran afin de financer les escadrons de la mort d’extrême droite des Contras. Les Contras étaient profondément impliqués dans le commerce de la cocaïne, alimentant leur sale guerre par la vente de crack aux États-Unis – une pratique que, selon le journaliste Gary Webb, la Central Intelligence Agency a facilitée.
L’impérialisme et les drogues illicites vont donc souvent de pair. Cependant, avec l’effort d’éradication de l’opium par les talibans, couplé au phénomène spécifiquement américain de la dépendance aux opioïdes, il est possible que les États-Unis subissent un contrecoup important dans les années à venir. L’épidémie mortelle de fentanyl ne fera probablement qu’empirer, emportant inutilement des centaines de milliers de vies américaines supplémentaires. Ainsi, alors même que l’Afghanistan tente de se débarrasser de son problème mortel de toxicomanie, ses actions pourraient précipiter une épidémie qui promet de tuer plus d’Américains que toutes les entreprises impériales de Washington à ce jour.
La boucle est bouclée. L’ancienne ministre française de la Santé Agnès Buzyn a confirmé mardi sa nomination à l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), à Genève, où elle sera chargée du suivi des questions multilatérales.
“Je vous confirme” avoir rejoint le 4 janvier le cabinet du directeur général de l’OMS Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a-t-elle déclaré à l’AFP, confirmant une information de l’Opinion.
Médecin spécialiste des leucémies et de la greffe de moelle, elle avait été nommée en mai 2017 au sein du gouvernement d’Edouard Philippe.
En février 2020, au tout début de l’épidémie de coronavirus, elle avait quitté son poste pour remplacer au pied levé Benjamin Griveaux, candidat de la majorité à la mairie de Paris et éclaboussé par un scandale sexuel.
A l’issue d’une campagne calamiteuse, l’ancienne ministre, est arrivée troisième au second tour.
Plus encore que son score décevant, ce sont des confidences publiées par Le Monde au surlendemain du 1er tour qui ont signé sa disgrâce. Elle disait avoir voulu “mettre fin à cette mascarade” des élections avant leur tenue en raison de l’épidémie qui s’annonçait, expression qu’elle a ensuite regrettée.
En retrait depuis son échec électoral, Agnès Buzyn s’était exprimée dans les colonnes du Figaro en mai pour dénoncer “un emballement médiatique d’une violence inouïe, des propos complotistes, antisémites, sur les réseaux sociaux“.
Rappelons que c’est Agnès Buzyn qui, peu avant de quitter son poste ministériel, avait modifié par un arrêté publié le 13 janvier 2020 au Journal officiel la liste des substances vénéneuses pour y inclure l’hydroxychloroquine (commercialisée sous le nom de Plaquenil), mettant ainsi fin à sa vente libre.
Agnès Buzyn qui est l’épouse d’Yves Lévy, l’ex-directeur de l’Institut national de la Santé et de la recherche médicale (Inserm). Le Professeur Raoult avait dénoncé le conflit d’intérêt entre l’Inserm et le ministère de la Santé compte-tenu des relations maritales entre celle qui devenait ministre de la Santé et celui qui était encore à la tête de l’Inserm. Le Professeur Raoult et l’IHU de Marseille étaient alors devenus des cibles de représailles du couple Buzyn-Lévy.
If people really understood just how much suffering and destruction is unleashed by US foreign policy, they’d stop making such a big deal about the minor differences between two political parties who always come together to support the most destructive US foreign policy decisions.
None of this was accidental. This was a blatant imperial narrative management operation. There will be more. The New York Times is a shitty militarist propaganda rag that somehow wound up setting the news agenda for the entire western world.

The human suffering caused by the minor differences in domestic policy between Democrats and Republicans is dwarfed by the suffering caused by foreign policy bipartisanship by orders of magnitude. The ways they are the same are vastly more significant than the ways in which they differ.
The main misconception about US presidents is that they are proactive leaders when they’re really reactive facilitators. They’re not proactively leading the government in accordance with their vision and ideology, they’re responding to and facilitating the various needs of the empire from year to year. That’s what the empire managers in their administrations are doing with their daily intelligence and national security briefings: explaining to them what the needs of the empire are on that day and what must be done to facilitate those needs, using whatever language will make a given president receptive.
The main difference between US presidents often comes down to the narratives that the empire managers who they surround themselves with will use to explain why they need to advance the interests of the empire. Progressive president? You need to kill Syrians to advance human rights. Conservative president? You need to kill Syrians to protect national security. Presidents who are unfamiliar with the workings of the empire surround themselves with empire managers who understand how to keep the gears of the imperial machine turning, and those empire managers explain what needs to be done in ways that the president will listen to.
This is a big part of what keeps the empire moving the same way from administration to administration. Every president is being “advised” (read: directed) by DC swamp monsters who all went to the same universities and moved through the same revolving door employment circles of government agencies and think tanks and party politics and military-industrial complex advising/lobbying and media punditry, who all understand what’s required of the US president to facilitate the perpetuation of US unipolar planetary hegemony.
These swamp monsters are part of the permanent government structure that stays in place regardless of the comings and goings of electoral politics, and they’re always balls deep in literally every presidential administration, no matter how rebellious or anti-establishment that president pretends to be. That permanent government structure is why the large-scale movements of the empire don’t change when a president is replaced by a new president of an opposing ideology; America’s official elected government may have changed, but its real government did not.
NATO leftists are like “I STRONGLY oppose the US empire and its warmongering, BUT we need to completely 100% support the US empire’s nuclear brinkmanship in Ukraine and scream at anyone who talks about everything the US empire did to provoke and prolong this war.”

All major international conflicts and negotiations ultimately boil down to the US working to stop the rise of China and China working to circumvent those efforts. Middle east policy, Russia policy, Africa policy, Australia policy, Latin America policy; it all ultimately comes back to China.
That’s why it’s silly when right wing “populists” act like antiwar heroes for saying the US should stop warmongering with Russia and the middle east in order to focus on China — it’s all about China. It’s all the same agenda. They’re not on different sides from the Democrats.
This was all set in motion decades ago when the US established a policy of ensuring that no other rival superpowers emerge after the fall of the Soviet Union.
None of which would necessarily be a problem if the US was a force for good in the world, or even just a force for good in the world relative to China. But that plainly is not the case.
So now we’re rapidly accelerating toward a horrific global conflict, all to ensure the continued domination of a power structure that demonstrably makes the world a much worse place than it would be if powerful governments just got along with each other.
The hope seems to be that China just taps out before it comes to hot war — that it just lets itself be absorbed into the US-centralized power structure like empire managers have been hoping it would for decades. But China doesn’t look ready to tap. It seems intent on retaining its national self-sovereignty.

It’s so stupid how we keep talking excitedly about the possibility that there’s non-human intelligence out there in the universe while our own oceans are full of giant-brained whales whose inner lives we know nothing about, and who are being driven to extinction by human activity.
The inner lives of cetaceans are complete mysteries to us. We have no idea what they’re doing with those brains or what their minds are like from the inside. The sperm whale has the largest brain in the animal kingdom. It doesn’t take 9 kilograms of brain matter to make a tail go up and down. Yet there’s almost no curiosity about what they’re using it for, and we’re killing them all off with pollution, ship collisions, ocean netting, overfishing and sonar while looking to the stars for intelligent life. It may end up being the case that we kill off a high level of non-human intelligence right in front of us before we even understand it.
