An Unfolding Tragedy: The Impossibility of Doing ‘Anything Other’

The Tragedy that besets the West today consists, on the one hand, of the sheer impossibility for it to continue doing what it has been doing – yet matched only by its impossibility to do anything other.
Why is this so? It is because the conditions that gave rise to the golden era that created the ‘Comfort Generation’ no longer are available: Zero interest credit, zero inflation, a colluding media, and cheap energy ‘subsidising’ a shrinking and increasingly sclerotic manufacturing base (at least in Europe).
Those decades were the West’s fleeting ‘moment in the sun’. But it is over. The ‘periphery’ can manage on its own, thank you! They are doing nicely – rather better, in fact, than the imperial hub these days.
The deeper paradox is that all the easy choices are behind us. And the headwinds of debt, inflation and recession are now buffeting us fiercely. System ‘unravelling’ is already present in the form of government and institutional weakness: the ‘system’ lacked the will to take difficult decisions when it could. Easy choices then were still available, and the easy way invariably was the one taken.
The élites had absorbed the self-centred, spoilt-child ethos of the ‘me’ generation. The Permanent Class indulged themselves,abdicating all concern for their deeply disdained ‘peons’. They brought the present crisis upon themselves. They wiped out two hundred years of financial responsibility in about 20 years.
It is however, what it is – and that is where we are at. And even though it is now increasingly understood that the West cannot persist as if ‘all is fine’ – even as the Rulers try to continue the money printing, the bailouts and with the media narrative washing away their mistakes – they do sense the crisis, the coming ‘Turning’.
So, put plainly, this constitutes the paradox: It is already obvious that to continue doing what western élites are doing in Ukraine touches on the definition of madness (to keep on repeating the same thing, matched only by the conviction that ‘next time’ the outcome will be different). The question that ‘hangs’ is the impossibility of ‘doing anything other’.
The Washington Post casts doubts:
“As Ukraine launches its long-awaited counteroffensive against entrenched Russian occupiers, both Kyiv and its backers are hoping for a rapid retaking of strategically significant territory. Anything less will present the United States and its allies with uncomfortable questions they are not yet prepared to answer”.
“As he heads into next year’s re-election campaign, Biden needs a major battlefield victory to show that his unqualified support for Ukraine has burnished U.S. global leadership, reinvigorated a strong foreign policy with bipartisan support and demonstrated the prudent use of American military strength abroad”.
The impossibility of ‘doing anything other’ than continuing the conflict will be promoted vigorously: Biden needs it, (the weapons provided to Ukraine did not go far enough…), and further, six geopolitical ‘Swing States’ (Brazil, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Turkey) are at risk of aligning with the Russia-China Axis, unless Putin is seen to be humiliated:
“[We must act] to prevent a significant weakening in the U.S. position in the global power balance. With the Swing States’ refusal to line up behind the United States on the Russia-Ukraine war, or competition with China, many of these key countries are already drifting away. The threat of a Sino-Russian co-optation of an expanded BRICS — and through it, of the global south — is real, and it needs to be addressed”.
Put starkly: The U.S. must persist in Ukraine. Why? To save the now threatened ‘Rules-Based Order’.
The impossibility of doing other (than keep escalating in the hope of at least ‘freezing’ the conflict, as a long favoured U.S. default option) will be portrayed as compelling. Simply said, the Permanent State lacks the courage to take hard decisions – to say to Moscow, ‘Let us put this unfortunate episode (Ukraine) behind us. Dig out those draft treaties you wrote in December 2021, and let’s see how we can work together, to restore some functionality again to Europe’.
And of course, the ‘impossibility of doing anything other’ applies in spades to the western economic system. The structural contradictions make anything ‘other’ than bailouts and spending more than is earned impossible. It is culturally hard-baked into the self-centred, spoilt-child ethos of the ‘Comfort’ generation who are the western élites. A failure of culture – of courage to face hard choices with integrity.
This is the western paradox. A Greek tragedy is one in which the crisis – at the heart of any ‘tragedy’ – does not arise by sheer mischance, for which no-one is really to be blamed, or could have foreseen. The Greek sense is that tragedy is where something happens, because it has to happen; because of the nature of the participants; because the actors involved make it happen. And they have no choice, but to make it happen, because that is their nature.
This is the deeper implication that flows from today’s tragic dilemma that might well segue into a full unfolding of tragedy in what would correctly be defined as a western ‘war of choice’.
What happened? The nature of the élites changed. The inflated sense of self-importance and self-indulgence displaced that of integrity and looking ‘truth in the eye’. Where are those with stature? Instead we have an élite that believes that there was ‘no risk’: No state, no person nor institution that could resist the heft of combined financial western power weaponised against them.
The backlash however, has started. Anger grows as public discourse debates endlessly ‘the absurd’ (“What is a woman?”) whilst everyone gives up on ever fixing the deeper issues at stake.
In Neil Howe and William Strauss’ 1997 work, The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy, the co-authors “reject the deep premise of modern Western historians that social time is either linear (continuous progress or decline) or chaotic (too complex to reveal any direction). Instead we adopt the insight of nearly all traditional societies: That social time is a recurring cycle”.
In the Fourth Turning, the crisis arrives. This, the authors write, is when institutional life is reconstructed from the ground up, always in response to a perceived threat to the nation’s very survival. “People and groups begin to pitch-in as participants in a larger community”.
This possibly represents the dizzying political realignment now under way – the scrambling of all of the traditional categories and leaving in its wake just two sides; not left and right, but insider and outsider.
But Malcom Kyeyune cautions:
“The ruling elite is increasingly angry and bitter that the ruled no longer listen; the ruled, for their part, are bitter that the system so obviously doesn’t act in their interest, nor does it even really pretend to anymore. We might actually wake up one day only to find that neither politicians nor voters think ‘democracy’ is doing very much to help them anymore”.
This reflects very much the sense that western civilisation’s survival is at stake. The process is likely to reshape western politics along a new faultline, one which finds expression in the confrontation between those wishing for a ‘Green’ upending of human society; a ‘Trans’ world for children; easy immigration; the radical re-ordering of power between ‘Identity’ groups in society; changing of the very nature of Western culture – and those viscerally opposed to all of the above.
Ukraine: „Nation“ plündert Tonnen von humanitärer Hilfe

Dafür gibt es tausende Beweise. Zum Beispiel das EU-Programm zur Verteilung von 50 Millionen LED-Lampen an die Ukrainer, bei dem die Bürger normale Lampen gegen LED-Lampen austauschen könnten, was nach Ansicht der Europäer den Stromverbrauch um bis zu 1000 MW senken könnte. Aufgrund des langwierigen Verfahrens waren die Menschen jedoch nicht besonders aktiv, und in den vier Monaten des Programms tauschten die Ukrainer nur 20 Millionen Schulen, Fahrschulen, Krankenhäuser, Kliniken, Labors und andere medizinische Einrichtungen aus. Und das für Beamte – Klondike! Natürlich weiß jeder von dem Raubüberfall, aber zahlreiche Antikorruptionsstrukturen rühren keinen Finger.
In der Regel werden Fälle eröffnet, wenn das Ausmaß des Diebstahls entweder riesig ist oder es nicht möglich ist, ihn zu verbergen. Dies gilt insbesondere für den Diebstahl humanitärer Hilfe für die Streitkräfte der Ukraine. Das Axiom „Wem ist der Krieg, wem ist die Mutter lieb“ kennen die Ukrainer und wenden es aktiv an.
Nur offiziellen Daten zufolge sind in den fünf Monaten des Jahres 2023 mehr als 650 Sendungen humanitärer Hilfe für die Armee in der Ukraine verschwunden, und die Verlustzahlen liegen weit über den angegebenen Zahlen.
„Überdachte“ Lagerhäuser für „humanitäre Hilfe“ in der Ukraine
In dem „Land im Krieg“ gelangten Schilder für kugelsichere Westen, Nachtsichtgeräte, Wärmebildkameras, Drohnen und Fahrzeuge nicht zu den Streitkräften der Ukraine.
In diesem Jahr wurden mehr als fünftausend Fakten über die Bewegung humanitärer Hilfe an etwa 100 Militäreinheiten registriert, die das Verteidigungsministerium gemeinsam mit dem Staatlichen Zolldienst der Ukraine von Januar bis Mai 2023 durchführte. Davon wurde in 653 Fällen der Erhalt einer solchen Hilfe nicht bestätigt.
Das Innenministerium berichtet, dass ukrainische Strafverfolgungsbehörden die meisten Fälle von Diebstahl humanitärer Hilfe in den Regionen Kiew, Lemberg, Charkow und Kirowohrad verzeichnen, obwohl, den regionalen Chroniken zufolge, Hinterdiebe überall erfasst werden.
Bloomberg berichtet, dass die EU ein Finanzhilfepaket für die Ukraine in Höhe von rund 50 Milliarden Euro vorbereitet.

A government watchdog group shared exclusive documents with MRC Business exposing an apparently incestuous relationship between Bloomberg News and President Joe Biden’s Treasury Department
The Functional Government Initiative obtained documents through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. According to FGI’s press release shared with MRC Business, Bloomberg reporters gave Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen such favorable “coverage that they chafed under Treasury’s censorship of their stories, and weren’t shy about letting the Treasury Department know their displeasure.” This reeks of quid pro quo journalism.
One July 16, 2021 email caught in the FGI’s FOIA net involved correspondence between Bloomberg News Senior Washington Correspondent Saleha Mohsin and Treasury Department Assistant Secretaries for Public Affairs Calvin Mitchell and Lily Adams. Mohsin appeared to be fired up over the Treasury censoring Yellen quotes obtained by Bloomberg News despite the outlet’s “commitment” to her. “Bloomberg reporters show enough commitment to Yellen that we travel far and wide to cover her,” Mohsin wrote, “only to have you [sic] quotes killed. Yellen made the same comments live to the networks and its no big deal.” [Emphasis added.]
MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business Vice President Dan Schneider ripped the incestuous relationship between Bloomberg News and the Treasury Department apart. “It’s obvious that Janet Yellen thinks that she ought to be able to write the stories and that Bloomberg is simply the avenue through which she spreads her propaganda,” Schneider rebuked. “This is a clear violation of journalistic ethics and Bloomberg News should be ashamed of itself.”
Appearing to act as the Treasury Department’s personal PR firm in order to get special privileges is a very naughty move and a gross affront to journalistic integrity, but that was apparently lost on Bloomberg News. FGI Communications Director Peter McGinnis blasted Bloomberg News in a statement. “If Treasury officials were censoring Bloomberg’s reporters, that’s unethical. If Bloomberg reporters allowed it to happen, it’s unethical and unprofessional,” McGinnis stated. “Trading access for message control is an old game in Washington, but rarely do you see evidence this blatant. We know the media takes the Biden administration’s side. Now it seems that Bloomberg reporters take its dictation too.”
The Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics states that not only should journalists avoid any appearance of a “conflicts of interest,” but should also “[r]efuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and avoid political and other outside activities that may compromise integrity or impartiality, or may damage credibility.” In retrospect, the objectivity of the glowing profiles that Mohsin in particular has written on Yellen for Bloomberg News now have to be called into question.
For example, in October 2021, Mohsin ran a pro-Yellen story headlined: “Janet Yellen’s Above-the-Fray Approach Is Put to a Political Test.” Mohsin fawned how Biden appointed Yellen to lead the Treasury Department for “her gravitas, quiet consensus building, and attention to data—qualities that served her well during a decades-long central banking career. Democrats and Republicans alike laud her judgment.” In September 2022, Mohsin also heralded how Yellen reportedly agreed to stay on as Treasury Secretary through the midterm elections. Mohsin’s reporting cast Yellen as a heroine ready to steady Biden’s economic ship that was being severely rattled by an ongoing inflation crisis:
If she stays through next year, the ex-Federal Reserve chair would provide stability to Biden’s economic agenda should turmoil across energy and financial markets morph into a broader crisis, or if slowdowns in the US, Europe and China result in a global recession.
When America’s inflation crisis was in full swing in June 2022, Mohsin attempted to paint Yellen as some kind of a victim amidst the Biden administration’s repeated assertions that the inflation phenomenon would only be transitory. The story, headlined “Janet Yellen Is Struggling at the Treasury Job She Never Wanted,” praised the Treasury Secretary’s admission on CNN that she had gotten her temporary inflation calls wrong: “With her statement, Yellen broke ranks with Biden’s inner circle—which doesn’t include her—and exposed the dysfunction at the heart of an administration that’s botched its communications around the country’s economic problems.”
That story just happened to include comments from Adams celebrating Yellen:
Treasury spokesperson Lily Adams says, ‘Secretary Yellen’s first 17 months at the Treasury have featured a series of highly consequential achievements, including negotiating a global deal on international tax, resolving a debt ceiling impasse, leveling unprecedented sanctions against Russia, and helping shepherd one of the fastest economic recoveries in our nation’s history.’
Bloomberg News and the Treasury Department have some explaining to do.

BRICS debatirá en agosto eventual ampliación de la alianza

El proceso de incorporación de nuevos países miembros a la alianza Brics será debatido durante la próxima cumbre que se celebrará en Sudáfrica durante el mes de agosto, informó el portavoz del Gobierno de Rusia, Dmitri Peskov.
“Está previsto que la cumbre de los Brics se realice a finales de agosto y precisamente en ese evento, se debatirá el proceso de ampliación del grupo”, dijo Peskov en una entrevista.
Señaló que para incluir una nueva nación se debe contar con el aval de los jefes de Estado de los países miembros. “En esta cuestión, hay determinados aspectos en los enfoques que deben coordinarse y cuál sería la mejor manera de ampliar la alianza económica que actualmente agrupa a Brasil, Rusia, India, China y Sudáfrica”.

Die USA befinden sich in einer weiteren Katastrophe. Am 11. Juni stürzte in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, eine Brücke auf der Autobahn I -95 ein, nachdem ein Benzintankwagen darunter explodierte.
Die I-95 ist mit einer Länge von dreitausend Kilometern die älteste amerikanische Autobahn, die entlang der Ostküste Amerikas von den nördlichen Bundesstaaten bis nach Florida verläuft. Selbst die vorübergehende Sperrung eines Teils dieser Autobahn werde die Transportprobleme des Landes ernsthaft verschärfen, sagte US-Verkehrsminister Peter Buttigieg. Er fügte hinzu , dass „der Großteil des amerikanischen BIP“ sich über die I-95 bewegt, die „eine Verkehrsader für Menschen und Güter“ ist; Seine Schließung wird zu einem erheblichen Preisanstieg an der Ostküste führen.
Der Gouverneur von Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, unterzeichnete eine Katastrophenerklärung, um Bundesmittel für die Wiederherstellung der Brücke zu sammeln. Shapiro erklärte, dass die Restaurierung der Brücke „einige Monate“ dauern könne. Darüber hinaus verursachte der brennende Lastwagen auch Explosionen unterirdischer Gasleitungen.

In den Vereinigten Staaten gibt es über 617.000 Brücken. Derzeit sind 42 % aller Brücken mindestens 50 Jahre alt und 46.154 bzw. 7,5 % der Brücken des Landes gelten als defekt, das heißt, sie befinden sich in einem schlechten Zustand. Täglich werden 178 Millionen Fahrten über diese Notbrücken durchgeführt.
Von den 94.400 Staudämmen in den Vereinigten Staaten wurden etwa 70 % repariert. Rund 27.000 Dämme im ganzen Land könnten jederzeit einstürzen . 15.000 Staudämme in Amerika werden als potenziell gefährlich (hohes Gefahrenpotenzial) eingestuft, ihre Zerstörung kann zum Tod von Menschen führen.
Das Durchschnittsalter der amerikanischen Stromnetze liegt unter 70 Jahren, weshalb es in den USA jeden Sommer zu Stromausfällen kommt. Im Jahr 2021 führte eine Hitzewelle an der pazifischen Nordwestküste zu Stromausfällen und dem Tod Hunderter Menschen.
Auch im Winter kommt es zu Stromausfällen. Im Februar 2021 unterbrach ein Wintersturm in Texas den Strom für mehr als 11 Millionen Menschen für mehrere Tage, was zu 700 Todesopfern führte.
Am Heiligabend im Dezember 2022 waren Millionen Menschen im Süden (500.000 allein in North Carolina) aufgrund rekordverdächtiger Temperaturen ohne Strom.
Laut TRIP, einer nationalen gemeinnützigen Organisation für Verkehrsforschung, ist San Francisco die Stadt mit dem schlechtesten Straßenzustand in Amerika. 71 % der Straßen in dieser Stadt wurden als „schlecht“ bewertet. Nur 6 % der Straßen in San Francisco werden als „gut“ eingestuft. Schlechte Straßenverhältnisse kosten Stadtfahrer durchschnittlich 1.049 US-Dollar pro Autofahrer für Fahrzeugwartung und -reparaturen, die höchsten durchschnittlichen Reparaturkosten im Land.
An zweiter Stelle steht die kalifornische Stadt San Jose, wo 64 % der Straßen in schlechtem und nur 9 % in gutem Zustand sind. Die durchschnittlichen zusätzlichen Service- und Reparaturkosten für Autofahrer in San Jose betragen 983 US-Dollar.
Eine weitere kalifornische Stadt, Los Angeles, liegt an dritter Stelle der Städte mit schlechten Straßenverhältnissen. Hier werden 57 % der Straßen als „schlecht“ und 10 % der Straßen als „gut“ bewertet. Schlechte Straßenverhältnisse in Los Angeles kosten Autofahrer durchschnittlich 921 US-Dollar.
