Munich Security Conference 2023: An Exercise in Western Self-Delusion

Scott Ritter

Delegates from around the world assembled in Munich, Germany on February 17, 2023, to convene an eponymously named security conference that has, since its inception in 1963, operated under the motto “Peace through Dialogue.”

For three days, world leaders participated in what has become known as “the Davos of Defense” (a reference to the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland), discussing critical security issues of the day.

This year, not surprisingly, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict dominated the agenda. What was a surprise, however, was the emphasis that western participants placed on action over discussion when it came to formulating a collective strategy for achieving some sort of conflict termination. Indeed, the dominant theme at Munich was not simply how to provide more material to Ukraine’s military, but how to do so in a manner that escalates the conflict by challenging Russia’s so-called “red lines” – regarding western support to Ukraine.

For the first time since the 1990’s, Russia was not invited to attend the conference. Instead, prominent Russian opposition figures, including exiled oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, chess champion Gary Kasparov, and Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny, were invited. The chairman of the conference, Christoph Heusgen, explained this pointed deviation from the principle of promoting dialogue by declaring that he did not want to be seen as providing a platform for Russian propaganda.

The underlying theme in Munich went beyond an escalation of support for Ukraine, and instead embraced the outright provocation of Russia. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda served as the pace-setter for this trend when, prior to the Munich Security Conference, he urged western leaders to consider providing Ukraine with “essential military aid” such as tanks, fighter aircraft, and long-range missiles, despite long-standing concerns by the west that the provision of such aid would be seen by Russia as evidence of direct participation by the providing parties in the conflict. “These red lines,” Nauseda declared, “must be crossed.”

On cue, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky opened the conference with an appeal, delivered via video and designed to underscore a sense of urgency. “We need to hurry up,” Zelensky declared. “We need speed—speed of our agreements, speed of our delivery, speed of decisions to limit Russian potential. There is no alternative to speed because it is the speed that the life depends on,” Zelensky said, concluding that there was “no alternative to a Ukrainian victory.”

But Zelensky’s exhortations for speed appeared to fall upon deaf ears when it came to two of Europe’s most important leaders. Both Germany’s Olaf Scholz and France’s Emmanuel Macron underscored that, from their perspective, the conflict in Ukraine would not be ending anytime soon. “I think it’s wise to prepare for a long war,” Scholz noted in his remarks to the conference, a sentiment Macron echoed by saying that Europe should prepare for a “prolonged conflict in Ukraine.”

Declaring that now was “not the time for dialogue,” Macron urged his fellow conference attendees to action. “We absolutely need to intensify our support and our effort to the resistance of the Ukrainian people and its army,” Macron said, and “help them to launch a counter-offensive which alone can allow credible negotiations, determined by Ukraine, its authorities and its people.”

There is a fundamental disconnect between the frenetic urgings of President Zelensky and the long-term approaches taken by Scholz and Macron that point to an overall atmosphere of self-delusion that seemed to dominate the Munich Security Conference.

While US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke of bringing Russian leaders “to justice” for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, the Ukrainian military is being systemically ground down on the battlefields of eastern Ukraine, soil that Russia now claims for its own. Current NATO military commander, Lieutenant General Christopher Cavoli, has described these battles as being “out of proportion” to NATO plans and capabilities in terms of the “scope and scale” of the violence being perpetrated on the ground by both parties to the conflict.

Rather than accept the inevitability of a Ukrainian military defeat, however, Cavoli briefed US lawmakers on the sidelines of the Munich Conference that, in his opinion, Ukraine should be provided with modern jet aircraft, including F-16 fighters, and long-range missiles capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory. These weapons, Cavoli said, would enable Ukraine to fight what he termed “the deep fight”, shifting the emphasis from the deadly fighting at the point of direct engagement to a new war where Ukraine would disrupt the Russian war effort by striking headquarters and supply lines deep behind the frontlines.

In short, Cavoli was outlining an escalatory strategy brought to life by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda’s earlier exhortations to cross all “red lines” when it came to supporting Ukraine.

But simple rhetoric cannot bridge the yawning gap that exists with reality. Words, especially in an environment like this year’s Munich Security Conference, where all pretense at dialogue has been forsaken in favor of the construction of a pro-western echo, resonate in a manner which promotes an artificial sense of substance. But unless these words are backed by concerted action, they carry no weight and will soon dissipate into nothingness.

This, in short, is the reality of the Munich Security Council—an exercise in self-delusion, similar in construct to the discussions around the conference table in the last days of the Battle of Berlin in 1945, in which Adolf Hitler moved imaginary armies around in a vain effort to seize victory from the inevitability of defeat.

The fact is, there are no tanks, no long-range missiles, no fighter aircraft available in any realistic time-frame that can help Ukraine reverse the deterioration of its military posture vis-à-vis Russia. Zelensky’s demands for urgency reflect a growing recognition on his part that, if left on the current trajectory, the war with Russia will be over soon—perhaps as early as August 2023. The inability and/or unwillingness on the part of the western military and civilian leadership to match their declarations of support with Zelensky’s timeline demonstrates an absolute divorce from reality on the part of those who were gathered in Munich, or else the cynicism of those who know the tragic fate that awaits those the claim to support only too well.

The harsh truth that the participants of the Munich Security Conference know, but cannot speak, is that there is no hope for a Ukrainian victory over Russia.

Sechsstündige Show in Kiew

Canada Has Blood on Its Hands: Ottawa’s Role in the Syria War Exposed

Steven Sahiounie

While most Canadians would prefer to think of themselves as free of constraint from U.S. foreign policy, still history will show that most often Canada’s foreign policy is a mirror image of the U.S.

Canada has blood on its hands in Syria. Canadian intelligence would have provided its government with the facts concerning the Syrian uprising in Deraa in March 2011. That information would have allowed the Canadian government to determine whether to support the U.S.-NATO attack on Syria for regime change or to stand on its own two feet and stay out of nation-building in the Middle East. Instead, the Canadian government knowingly hung on to the apron strings of their southern neighbor and followed the leader into destroying a nation, and deliberately preventing its recovery when the conflict was over.

The conflict in Syria has been described as a popular uprising that was crushed, or as a civil war. The Syrian conflict is neither. It was a CIA-engineered plan for regime change directed by U.S. President Obama. Later, the EU and Canada supported the U.S.-NATO attack on Syria because the EU and Canada usually follow the lead of the U.S. unquestioningly.

The U.S. plan failed because of overestimating the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood’s support in Syria. The majority of the Syrian population are Sunni Muslims, but they are overwhelmingly secular in terms of governance. Had the population supported the Free Syrian Army, which was the foot soldiers of Obama, the regime change might have been successful. But, most Syrians rejected the notion of chopping off the heads of their neighbors to effect a change in government. The majority of Syrians reject Radical Islam, which is a political ideology hiding behind a religion. They prefer a secular government that protects religious rights for all, given the fact, there are 18 different sects in Syria.

The conflict in Syria has ended with the country having been split into 3 sections. The main section covers 75% of the territory in the hands of the central government in Damascus, while the northeast corner is under the occupation of the U.S. military partnership with the Kurds, and the last remaining terrorist-controlled area is in the tiny enclave of Idlib.

The Kurdish section was not involved in the recent earthquake, and they support themselves by selling stolen oil from the oil wells guarded by the U.S. military which President Trump ordered, and President Biden has ordered to remain occupied. When the U.S. troops leave Syria, the Kurds will reunite with the central government. The U.S. occupation is the only thing keeping them separate.

The country has been prevented from recovery due to the U.S.-EU sanctions which prevent any materials from being shipped to Syria. Canadian companies, and individuals, have not sent machines, materials, or other recovery supplies for fear of being penalized by the U.S. Treasury Department. Humanitarian supplies are supposed to be exempt, except there is a time-consuming and costly procedure to get an exemption approved, and most firms and individuals are not willing to seek approval.

On February 9 the U.S. Treasury Department issued General License 23 which waives the sanctions for humanitarian supplies only for 180 days in the wake of the 7.8 earthquakes. Canadian companies and individuals could send supplies to Damascus, but they must be sent through an NGO and not the Syrian government.

Humanitarian aid was sent to Idlib from the UN, crossing the Turkish border at Bab al Hawa. International aid agencies and charities have arrived in Idlib from Turkey. When the Canadian government states they are supporting humanitarian efforts inside Syria, they are referring strictly to the one small province of Idlib, under the command of Al Qaeda terrorists who call themselves Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Canada has taken in over 25,000 Syrian refugees. While this has been seen as a humanitarian act, it is also a political tool. From the outset of the conflict in 2011, refugee camps were established on the border of Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. Refugees sleeping in tents in bad weather demonstrate on western media that Syria was not safe to live in, and not politically correct. Some of the refugees left Syria because they were politically opposed to the government in Damascus. Those refugees mainly numbered among the followers of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is a global terrorist organization, whose goal is to establish an Islamic government everywhere. However, most of the refugees were escaping violence caused by the conflict. Houses were destroyed by both the terrorists and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). In many cases, it was the terrorists who attacked homes and civilians. In response to the terrorists’ attacks, the SAA responded likewise attacking terrorist positions which were located in civilian homes.

Both Turkey and Jordan were allied with the U.S. foreign policy under Obama and were playing supporting roles to the CIA program Timber Sycamore which supported Radical Islamic terrorists fighting the government in Damascus. Both Turkey and Jordan had offices that supplied weapons, cash, and training to the terrorists fighting in Syria. The refugee camps in both countries served as a haven for the families of the terrorists fighting in Syria, in which the UN and other international aid agencies would be feeding and caring for the basic needs of the refugees in the camps.

By 2016, Canada had spent over $1 billion in humanitarian, development, and security assistance in the Syria crisis. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced 2016 Canada’s new strategy for the Syrian crisis. His new strategy was to keep following the Americans, and he tried to reframe his government’s involvement as humanitarian.

Over the years, Canada has been accused of being a lap dog for the U.S. While most Canadians would prefer to think of themselves as free of constraint from U.S. foreign policy, still history will show that most often Canada’s foreign policy is a mirror image of the U.S. Many would say that is because the U.S. policy is in the best interest of Canada, and not a dictated position. U.S. President Obama used the Israeli paper “A Clean Break” as the road map for regime change in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, and Syria. He was trying to create a ‘New Middle East’. His plan failed in each country, but succeeded in destroying much of each country, and killing thousands. Obama used the Muslim Brotherhood as his partner on the ground in each of the countries. Egypt, Tunisia, and Syria resisted the Muslim Brotherhood and fought back to remain secular governments even though the full weight of U.S.-EU-NATO resources was thrown at the project.

By April 2017, Trudeau was still hanging on to the Obama regime change project in Syria.  However, by then President Trump had been elected to office, and he shut the CIA operation in Syria down. Trudeau attended a G7 meeting and was talking up Syria with UK Prime Minister May and French President Hollande. They were anticipating directions from U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson concerning the future of the U.S. regime change program in Syria.

They would later find that Trump was not in favor of the Obama plan, and it was his wish to leave Syria, but in 2019 he was prevented from a troop withdrawal from Syria by the U.S. State Department headed by Mike Pompeo, who said the U.S. troops needed to remain to prevent the Syrian government from access to their oil. This is why Syrian homes have 30 minutes of electricity 3 times per day now.

According to the U.S. government, and their Canadian followers, if you keep the Syrian people without electricity, without gasoline, and without heating fuel in winter, they will rise and complete the Obama regime change plan. That strategy is both immoral and unethical. It is also illegal under international law to steal a nation’s resources.

The Muslim Brotherhood is very well established in Canada and had connections at the highest levels in the Canadian government. In February 2015, the standing senate committee on national security and defense met in Ottawa to study and report on security threats facing Canada.

In the meeting of senators, an excerpt from the memorandum of the Muslim Brotherhood was shown as evidence.

“The Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood) must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers.”

The Muslim Brotherhood had successfully entered into the Obama administration and key U.S. official positions. The group had done the same in Canada.

In the Ottawa meeting, it was stated that in June 2012, a delegation of Islamist leaders linked to the Muslim Brotherhood operating in Canada had met with Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews. The delegation was led by Hussein Hamdani, an adviser to the Department of Public Safety, as a member of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security.

Hamdani was in a conflict-of-interest position in his role as an adviser on national security matters since he has been associated with organizations whose charitable status has been revoked by the Canada Revenue Agency due to their involvement in the financing of international terrorism.

Senator Beyak spoke at the meeting and said, “They declare themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the Muslim Brotherhood, and as Senator Lang pointed out, their plans are very clear.”

This demonstrates the deep understanding of the Canadian government of the deadly nature of the Muslim Brotherhood, its involvement in Canada, its government, and its link to the conflict in Syria, which was part of the Obama plan.

An Unexpected Insight (for the Élite): The U.S. May Be the Biggest Loser in the War on Russia

Alastair Crooke

Where does Europe go in the wake of the Nord Stream allegations? It is hard to see a Germany-dominated Europe diverging far from Washington.

“NATO has never been stronger; Russia is a global Pariah; and the world remains inspired by Ukrainian bravery and resilience; in short, Russia has lost, Russia has lost strategically, operationally and tactically – and they are paying an enormous price on the battlefield”.

He, (General Mark Milley, U.S. Chief of Defence Staff) doesn’t believe a word of that. We know that he doesn’t believe it because, two months ago, he said the exact opposite – until he was chastised by the White House for straying off the Joe Biden message. Now he is back, playing on ‘Team’.

Zelensky likely also doesn’t believe the word of the recent European promise of tanks and aircraft – and he knows it to be mostly a chimera. But he plays on Team. A few extra tanks will make no difference on the ground, and his fifth mobilisation is being resisted at home. The European militaries are waiting-out this episode, their armouries running on ‘reserve tank’.

Zelensky repeatedly says he must have tanks and planes by August to sandbag his haemorrhaging defences. But contradictorily Zelensky is warned, It’s critical; “make significant gains on the battlefield” now – as it is the Administration’s “very strong view” that it will be harder thereafter, to obtain Congressional support (i.e. August is past time; it will be too late).

Clearly the U.S. is preparing the ground for a Spring ‘Victory Announcement’ – as Milley’s delusional comments foreshadow – and a pivot – just a whisker ahead of the U.S. Presidential Election calendar kick-off.

The ‘narrative’ in the MSM has already begun to transition to that of a coming crushing Russian offensive – and of heroic Ukrainian resistance overwhelmed by crushing force.

“The critical nature of the next few months has already been conveyed to Kiev in blunt terms by top Biden officials — including deputy national security adviser Jon Finer, deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman and undersecretary of defence Colin Kahl, all of whom visited Ukraine last month” (Washington Post) – with CIA Director Bill Burns travelling to personally brief Zelensky just a week ahead of those officials’ arrival.

Zelenksky was put on notice. Results now, or else!

But then Seymour Hersh finally says out loud, an unspoken harsh reality – one with hugely complicated political consequences (taken from Hersh’s subsequent interview with Berliner Zeitung, (Google translation)). No, not the Nord Stream sabotage (we knew that), but that of reckless misjudgement and rising anger in Washington – and contempt for Biden and his close team of neocons’ immature political judgements.

It’s not just that the Biden Team ‘blew up the pipelines’; they’re proud of that! It’s not just that Biden was prepared to eviscerate the competitive ability and employment prospects of Europe for the next decade (some will applaud). The explosive part of the narrative was that “At some point after the Russians invaded, and the sabotage was done… (these are people who work in top positions in the intelligence services, and are well trained): They turned against the project. They thought it crazy”.

“There was a lot of anger among those involved” noted Hersh. Initially, Biden’s Nord Stream narrative – ‘it will not happen’ – was understood by the Intel ‘pros’ as simple leverage (linked to a then prospective Russian invasion) – an invasion which Washington knew was coming, because the U.S. was prepping Ukrainians furiously – precisely in order to trigger the Russian invasion.

Yet the Nord Stream sabotage was postponed – from June until September 2022 – months after the invasion had happened. So, what then was the point of crippling the European industrial base through imposing sky-high energy costs on it? What was the rationale? And there was more anger at Biden’s Team members ‘shooting their mouths’ about Nord Stream, effectively boasting ‘damn right, yes, we ordered it’.

Hersh comments that although the CIA answers to ‘power’ in the broad meaning, rather than to Congress, “even this community is horrified by the fact that Biden decided to attack Europe in its economic underbelly – in order to support a war that he will not win”. Hersh opines that in a White House obsessed with re-election, the Nord Stream sabotage was seen as a ‘win’.

Hersh said in his Berliner Zeitung interview:

“What I know is that there is no way this war is going to end the way we [the U.S.] wants it to end … It scares me that the president was ready for such a thing. And the people who carried out this mission believed that the president was well aware of what he was doing to the people of Germany. And in the long run, [they believe] this will not only damage his reputation as president, but also be very harmful politically. It will be a stigma for the U.S.”.

The concern is more than that – it is that Biden’s obsessive zeal is turning the Ukraine from a proxy war into an existential issue for the U.S. (existential in the sense of the humiliation and reputational damage if the war was lost). It is already a Russian existential issue. And two nuclear powers in an existential confrontation is bad news.

Let us be very clear: This was not the first time that Biden did something – regarded by the U.S. intelligence professionals – as wholly reckless: Robert Gates, the former Defense Secretary said on Sunday that Biden has been wrong on nearly every major foreign and security issue over four decades. In February 2022, he seized Russia’s foreign exchange assets; he expelled its banks from SWIFT (the interbank clearing system) and imposed on her a tsunami of sanctions. The Federal Reserve and the ECB said afterwards they were never consulted, and if they had been – would never have consented to the measures.

Biden claimed his action would ‘reduce the rouble to rouble’; he was grievously mistaken. Rather, Russia’s resilience has brought the U.S. closer to a financial precipice (as dollar demand dries up, and the world shifts eastwards). From the perspective of significant financial actors in New York, Biden and the Fed now must hurry to rescue a systemically fragile U.S.

Simply said, the import of Hersh’s Berliner Zeitung interview (and his other pieces) is that factions within the U.S. Deep State are furious at the circle of neo-cons (Sullivan, Blinken and Nuland). Trust is ‘done’. They are coming for them; and will keep on coming… Hersh’s piece is but a first taste.

For the moment, the neo-cons’ Ukraine project remains ‘current’, with Team Biden demanding all western allies remain tightly on message, ahead of the 24 February first anniversary of Russia’s Special Operation.

It would appear the critical window for Ukraine somehow to ‘magically win’ however, is being cut from months to a few weeks. ‘Winning’, of course, remains undefined. Yet the reality is that it will be Russia, rather than Ukraine, that will be mounting the Spring offensive – and possibly along the entire length of the Contact Line.

The ‘writing is on the wall’ for Ukraine (albeit with Kamala Harris dispatched to the Munich Security Conference) to plug the Team ‘line’ of an ‘enduring commitment to Ukraine’ by the collective West for the long haul.

Paradoxically, behind the curtain, this ongoing ‘civil war’ in the U.S. Establishment threatens to become ‘the writing on the wall’ for Biden too – as he approaches that 2024 Candidature decision moment.

Can Biden be trusted not to be reckless, the U.S. Intelligence Community must be asking itself, as Ukraine grinds into entropy under a Russian surge across all fronts? Will Biden again become desperate?

Can we imagine that the U.S. might just throw-up its hands and concede Russian victory? No – NATO might disintegrate in the face of such spectacular failure. So the political instinct will be a gamble; to double-down: A NATO deployment into western Ukraine as ‘a buffer force’, to ‘protect it from Russian advances’ is under consideration.

It is not hard to see why factions within the Deep State are “appalled”: America’s defence industry products are being consumed in Ukraine faster than they can be manufactured. It is adversely changing the U.S. calculus on China, as the U.S. military inventory burns away in Ukraine. And the Ukraine war easily can spill across eastern Europe …

The bottom line is the unexpected insight (for the élite) that the U.S. itself may be the biggest loser in the war on Russia. (Moscow understood this from the outset).

Team Biden has essentially sparked a concerted push-back from the Establishment versus his decision-making competence. Hersh’s report; the Rand Organisation Report, the Economist interviews with Zelensky and Zaluzhny, the CSIS report, the IMFreport showing Russia growing economically, and the scattered eruptions of hard reality appearing in the MSM – all attest to the circle of dissent at Biden’s handling of the Ukraine war that is gathering steam.

Even the recent Chinese Balloon hysteria, leading to NORAD shooting down every and all unidentified objects in U.S. airspace, smacks of some at the Pentagon poking the Biden team ‘in the eye’: i.e., If you (Team Biden) are stupid enough to insist we ‘uncheck every box’ on the NORAD radars, don’t be surprised at the rubbish you will be shooting down daily.

This speaks firstly of disdain for the White House grasp of the finer details; and secondly of how the Chinese Balloon has performed a symbolic role in re-energising the U.S. China hawks who hold the majority in terms of bi-partisan Congressional support.

Can Biden be removed? Theoretically ‘yes’. Sixty percent of young Democratic Party members do not want Biden to stand again. The difficulty however, lies with Kamala Harris’ deep unpopularity as a possible successor. The latest evidence of Harris’ fading position is a sharply critical article in the New York Times, filled with anonymous disapproval from senior Democrats, many of whom once supported her. Now, they are worried.

Their fear, Charles Lipson writes, is that she’s almost impossible to drop:

“To win, Democrats need enthusiastic support from African Americans, who are likely to be insulted if Harris is dumped. That problem might be averted if she were replaced by another African American. But there are no obvious alternatives. If Harris is replaced, it would likely be by a white or Hispanic candidate …

“Such a change would roil a party deeply invested in the politics of racial and ethnic identity, where losing groups are seen as aggrieved victims, winners as “privileged” oppressors. Those divisions are most virulent when they centre on America’s historic wound of race, and they would be turned inward on the party”.

Why should we not expect an investigation by the Democratic Party hierarchy or from Congress in pursuit Seymour Hersh’s allegations of deliberately by-passing Congress? Well, put simply, it is this: Because it exposes the ‘unsayable’. Yes, Biden did not ‘inform’ Congress, though some of them do seem to have known about the Nord Stream sabotage in advance. Technically, he bypassed the system.

The difficulty is that both sides of the House largely APPROVE of such exceptionalism – U.S. exceptionalism provides that the U.S. can do what it likes, whenever it likes, to whomsoever it wants. There are so many instances of this ingrained in practice: Who will dare to cast the first stone at ‘Old Joe’? No, the case against Biden – if it is to be pursued – must be the collective view that Biden is unfit to exercise sound judgement on issues which might risk lurching the U.S. toward all-out war with Russia.

If Biden is forced out, it will be done from ‘smoke filled rooms’ of insiders. Too many have quietly benefitted from the Ukraine boondoggle.

Where does Europe go in the wake of the Nord Stream allegations? It is hard to see a Germany-dominated Europe diverging far from Washington. The present German leadership is in thrall to Washington and readily has accepted its vassalage. France will – a few hiccoughs aside – stick with Germany. However, as the U.S. observes its dollar sphere contract with the expansion of the BRICS and the East Asian Economic Community, the U.S. will bear down hardest on its captive nearest economies. Europe will likely pay a devastating price.

In any event, the EU does not discuss the really sensitive issues in public – only in meeting rooms where all mobiles have been removed in advance. Transparency or accountability barely figure in such discussions.

The Sky is Torn Down: How the “Liberation” of the Soviet Union Ended the Liberation of Soviet Women

Evan Reif
Night Witches:The female pilots who struck fear into Nazi troops

16th of June 1963, a Vostok 8K72K rocket is launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR. Its payload is a Vostok 3KA orbital module, the same type which had carried Yuri Gagarin into space 2 years earlier.

Inside the cramped and almost unbearably hot capsule, Vostok had a crew of just one cosmonaut. There was no backup, unreliable radios, and only rudimentary computer navigation. The sole cosmonaut was expected to manually manage every aspect of the mission, even parachuting back to earth after re-entry.

The cosmonaut was well trained for this. The rigorous screening process had winnowed thousands of applicants down to 400. The training further reduced that number to 58, then 23. Eventually, only three remained. The one chosen for this mission came from a humble background, a factory worker and amateur skydiver from Yaroslavl and the child of a tractor driver and a textile worker with no military experience.
Hero of the Soviet Union Valentina Tereshkova

Her name is Valentina Tereshkova. She is 26 years old and the first woman in space, 20 years before Sally Ride. She completed a three-day mission, parachuted to earth, and was greeted with parades in her honor then awarded Hero of the Soviet Union, the USSR’s highest honor. Her accomplishments will be forever engraved in the annals of history.

In 2017, a young girl in a filthy fur coat lies next to a pile of construction debris in the streets of Kiev. A park stood here once, in happier times. Now all that remains is rubble and sadness. This is where she lives, sometimes taking shelter in the sewers or metro stations when it’s particularly cold.

She is one of 800,000 homeless Ukrainian children in a nation of 40 million, forced to suffer because the machinations of Capitalism have deemed their lives to be superfluous. The entire United States homeless population, at the height of the nation’s greatest housing crisis in the postwar era, is under 600,000.

She is clutching the stray dog she keeps as a pet as she drifts in and out of consciousness. Tonight, she huffed glue for the first time to dull the physical and emotional pain from a savage beating at the hands of her pimp. The pimp was angry that the girl had become pregnant and would soon be rendered unable to sell her body, and what remains of her innocence, cheating the pimp of his tribute.

Her name is Natasha, and she is 16 years old. She will never be allowed to explore the stars. There will be no parades in her honor and no medals on her chest. History will forget that she ever existed. Her future was stolen from her a decade before her birth by bankers in Washington and gangsters in Kiev.
Natasha enjoying her “freedom” after a beating from her pimp

This should not be possible if we believe the omnipresent propaganda from our government and its thralls in the press. We are told Valentina lived in a repressive dictatorship that stifled human potential and ambition, while Natasha lived her entire life in a country that was “liberated” 25 years prior by the magnanimous west. As usual, this propaganda about “freedom” poorly conceals the savage truth.

The New Soviet Woman

“Petty housework crushes, strangles, stultifies and degrades [the woman], chains her to the kitchen and to the nursery, and wastes her labor on barbarously unproductive, petty, nerve-racking, stultifying and crushing drudgery.”- V.I. Lenin

Had Natasha been born on June 16th, 1963, she would have been born truly free. In the Soviet Union, women were not the slaves of pimps. They were not forced to sell themselves out of desperation nor beaten and forced to freeze and starve in the streets. They did not huff glue to dull the pain of being alive. In the Soviet Union, women held up half the sky.

From the very beginning of the Union, the CPSU viewed the liberation and advancement of women as vitally important. The 1918 family code guaranteed the rights of women to no cause divorce, maternal leave, and equal wages, entitlements, and protections in the workplace. In 1920, the USSR legalized abortion, and in 1922 it was the first nation to recognize and criminalize marital rape.

The cause was important enough that a women’s committee called the Zhentodel was formed inside the Central Committee of the CPSU, the party’s highest decision-making apparatus. The committees proliferated down to the local level where they were known as Zhensovety, and by the time of Gorbachev, 2.3 million Soviet women took part. The Zhentodel advocated for all women, regardless of their background, each of the USSR’s 100 ethnic groups had its own councils to focus on their specific needs. Women did not just petition the party, the women of the Zhentodel took an active role in the fight for liberation.
ChuvashZhentodel, 1925

The situation facing these women was often dire. Perhaps the clearest evidence of this was in Central Asia, where the region’s fundamentalist strain of Islam kept women in complete isolation. In many wealthy families, women were kept in separate rooms and not allowed to leave the home, with all their needs attended to by legions of servants. Poor women were forced into head-to-toe veils known as paranja, and any who refused were beaten or executed. Beyond veils and isolation, women’s literacy rates were in the single digits, and practices such as bride kidnapping, child marriage, widow inheritance, honor killings, and female genital mutilation were common.
A woman in a Paranja

On International Women’s Day, March 8th of 1927, the Zhenotdel began an organized campaign known as the Hujum (Arabic for “attack” or “storming”) against these practices. Cadres of Soviet women were trained and dispatched to the region. They set up maternity hospitals, informed local women of their rights, and most importantly, educated them. This was done in concert with a public campaign against the veil as a symbol of oppression. Within 3 months, around 100,000 women removed and publicly burned their veils in protest.

This campaign was not an easy one. Around 2500 feminists were murdered in Uzbekistan alone. Many were killed in public, beaten and stabbed in the same squares where they had removed their veils for the first time. Ainabyubyu Jalganbayeva, a Kyrgyz activist, teacher, and member of the local Soviet government was ambushed and murdered with a dagger in broad daylight for the crime of teaching women how to read. Nurkhon Yuldashkhojayeva and Tursunoy Saidazimova, two of the most remarkable Uzbek singers of their era, were both murdered for performing without a veil at CPSU events.

Despite this campaign of terror and violence, the Zhentodel and its successors persisted. They continued fighting, in one form or another, for 15 years before the Hujum finally ended due to the Second World War. It did not end in vain. The hard work and sacrifice of thousands of Soviet women brought the flame of liberation to those who had been held in darkness for centuries. By 1950, the literacy rate of Uzbek women was 75%. Life expectancy skyrocketed, and infant mortality plummeted. Statues to the martyrs who died for this cause stood all over central Asia until the fall of the USSR.

Soviet women were among the world’s most highly educated and encouraged to enter medicine, academics, and STEM fields. By 1967, Soviet women comprised 41% of the nation’s engineers and 75% of its doctors. They made vast contributions to fields as diverse as medicine, mathematicscomputer sciencenuclear physics, and much more. Even today, so many women remain in STEM fields in the former Warsaw Pact that the Economist views it as a problem.

As was the case with all Soviet citizens, women had access to the nation’s wide array of free art programs. Soviet women once again excelled, creating some of the nation’s most iconic works of art. Countless sculptorspainterspoetsactresses, musiciansdancerssingers, and more were given the nation’s highest awards in honor of their work and Soviet women were instrumental in the creation of new artistic movements, such as Constructivism, Suprematism, and Futurism. Far from the repressive and drab lives of drudgery we are told were part and parcel of the Soviet system, Soviet women flourished in the new artistic scenes ushered in and nurtured by the revolution.

When Nazi barbarians came to enslave and murder the Soviet people, Soviet women refused to bend the knee. Nearly half a million women risked their lives in the struggle against fascism, and once again Soviet women covered themselves with glory. Over 200,000 were decorated for valor, 89 of those were awarded Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest possible honor for a Red Army soldier. Women fought as snipers, tankers, pilots, machine gunners, and even partisans.

Heroes like partisan Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya paid the ultimate price in the battle against Nazism. Zoya was only 18 years old when she was captured, tortured, and murdered by the Nazis while on a combat mission near Moscow. Even after days of torture, she never betrayed her comrades. Her last words were “Farewell, comrades! Fight, do not be afraid! Stalin is with us! Stalin will come!” She died to ensure that not even Adolf Hitler could put Soviet women back in chains.
Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Hero of the Soviet Union

With Marxism and Soviet power behind them, Soviet women were able to break through the bounds of the sky itself and take their place among the stars. Sadly, it would not last. While Hitler failed, Boris Yeltsin and Bill Clinton succeeded in tearing down the sky.

Genocide by any other name

“Why are you worried about these people? Well, thirty million will die out. They didn’t fit into the market. Don’t think about it – new ones will grow”- Anatoly Chubais

The liberatory power of Marxism posed an existential threat to the forces of international capital who depend on slavery and exploitation to sustain themselves. Therefore, the USSR was never allowed to peacefully develop, instead forced to exist under the constant threat of annihilation, even facing a western led invasion in 1918.

Hitler was only one of many Capitalists who attempted to destroy the USSR, and after the war, the remains of the Third Reich were all but openly rolled into the new US-led NATO security  apparatus  which waged a covert war against the USSR. This external pressure combined with betrayal from within eventually led to the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and unleashed a catastrophe upon the Soviet people that would have made Hermann Göring proud.

In 1990, when the USSR was one year away from collapse after a decade of economic sabotage, the nation’s Human Development Index was ranked 25th in the world at .920.

In 2019, the most recent year the data was published, Russia ranked 52nd. Kazakhstan was 51st. Ukraine plummeted to 74th, below Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Albania. Uzbekistan, where so many Soviet women fought and died to win their freedom, was 106th. Even the Baltics have yet to fully recover. Estonia is ranked 29th, Lithuania is 34th, and Latvia is 37th.

None of the Union Republics have a HDI of over .900 today. Even at its worst, the Soviet Union provided a better quality of life than any of its successor states.
Beneficiaries of the “rules based international order”, Moscow, 1996

This was not an accident, but rather the result of an intentional policy. The wealth and security of the Soviet people did not vanish into thin air, they were stolen by western bankers and their collaborators in the former Warsaw Pact.

Much like in the 1940s, when the grandfathers of these bandits looted the Soviet Union for the first time, this campaign of systematic pillaging was lethal. Peer-reviewed documents list the excess deaths from 1991 to 2001 at a minimum of five million in Russia alone. When the Union Republics are added to the butcher’s bill, the death toll easily exceeds that of the Holocaust.
Children enjoying their new freedom by huffing glue, 1994

Had this happened anywhere else or had it been perpetrated by anyone else; it would have been called what it was. Genocide.

Even beyond the death toll, the magnitude of this crime is staggering. In 1992, the inflation rate was 2520%. The next year, Boris Yeltsin’s criminal regime confiscated the savings of the Soviet people, sending their money to banks in Europe and America to pay off debt. This, of course, only affected the Soviet people lucky enough to have any savings left. Many were not so fortunate.

In the name of “modernizing the social safety net”, the new regime simply quit paying pensions, child benefits, and unemployment. By 1997, unpaid pensions amounted to 17 trillion rubles, child benefits 10 trillion, and unemployment 2 trillion. This is around 500 billion USD, stolen from the Soviet people and sent to the west. When protests forced the resumption of payments in 1998, inflation rendered the meager payments essentially worthless. Pensions were only 44% of a subsistence income, and child benefits only 8%, utterly devastating mothers and leading many women to either forgo having children or put their children up for adoption.

This meant that many elderly people died of exposure, starvation, and deprivation. Many of those who remained were reduced to begging or selling their few possessions on the streets. It created a crisis of child homelessness which has still not been resolved, with millions of children leaving school and falling into crime and drug abuse to survive. The effects of this genocide on Soviet mothers and children were so severe it created a demographic crisis that continues to this day.
Elderly women selling their possessions at a so called “flea market”, Rostov-on-Don, 1992

Adding to their misery, the purchasing power of the Soviet people declined by 98%, a fact rendered almost meaningless by severe, widespread shortages of basic goods caused by the destruction of Soviet industry for the benefit of the US and Europe. Factories sent their machinery west then closed by the thousand, taking jobs with them, and many of those who kept their jobs were paid sporadically, if at all.

By the end of 1995, wages in the former USSR had fallen to 34% of their 1991 levels. This was compounded by widespread wage theft. By the end of 1997, the amount of wages stolen from Russian workers sat at a minimum of 20 trillion rubles and many workers went months, even years without payment. This led to widespread strikes, occupations, and sabotage, culminating in the 1998 “railway war” in which workers occupied and shut down railway networks throughout Russia.

One Vorkuta miner described their situation:

“There is no money for basic necessities. <…> We have to ask for money from retired parents, whom we must help ourselves. And their pension is known what. Shamefully. < … > My son once said to me: What, Dad, are we going to die? <…> In one family, a schoolboy son hanged himself and left a note: “I’m tired of listening to you and your mother quarrel over money…“ In another family, the father himself couldn’t stand it — he tied explosives around himself. Three of us have committed suicide. We are slaves, cattle. The slave is fed by the master. You can’t live like this anymore! “

Striking miners in Red Square, 1998

The workers were successful in the short term, forcing the Yeltsin regime to transfer money from the budget to cover their back pay. In the long term, however, it was a disaster. The payment of workers represented a violation of loan terms imposed on Russia by the World Bank, leading to the withdrawal of vital loans and the forced privatization of most of Russia’s mines and railways. James Cook, an American banker and major fundraiser for Hillary Clinton described this crisis as “the best thing that ever happened to us.”

All of this was carried out with the assistance and advice of both international finance capital and the United States Government, in particular the pedophile-in-chief Bill Clinton, who viewed Yeltsin as a close friend and indispensable partner. Bill went to bat for Yeltsin numerous times and even implemented a full court press to rig the 1996 Russian election in Yeltsin’s favor, ensuring 4 more years of suffering for the Russian people and 4 more years of profit for his fundraisers.

The ravenous sexual predator in the White House was not content to simply rape the Soviet economy. He also raped its girls with the help of his best friend, Jeffery Epstein.

From Vostok to the Lolita Express

“I will send you to Paris. You’ll live there, you’ll chat a little, we’ll  get you cleaned up. We’ll make you a portfolio, I’ll show your pictures to a rich man. And if he likes you, he’ll give me the money to introduce you. You’re going to play around with him a bit, and importantly, listen to Uncle Peter [Listerman’s nickname for himself], you are not to let him have you immediately. Because if you decide to give it to him, then he has to pay more. And then, if he likes you and he decides to keep you with him, he has to pay even more. Moreover, Uncle Peter will teach you how to live.”– Peter Listermann, international sex trafficker

The genocide of the 1990s hit Soviet women especially hard. They were not simply impoverished, fired, turned out of their homes, forced to starve and freeze, denied basic medical care, and stripped of their dignity. Starting in the 1990s, millions of Soviet women have been enslaved by gangsters both foreign and domestic. Taken off the streets either through deception or violence, they are trafficked to foreign countries and raped by the very same people who richly profited from their misery.
Friends and fellow pedophiles Jeffery Epstein and Bill Clinton, aboard the “Lolita Express”

Interpol and the OSCE estimate that 4-7 million people from the former Warsaw Pact are trafficked each year, and the majority of those are women and children.

In this regard, Yeltsin and Clinton managed to once again outdo Hitler. The Nazi Ostarbiter program managed to enslave about 8 million for forced labor in the Reich, but what took Hitler 4 years, the American model manages in 2. Perhaps it is a testament to the ruthless efficiency of American capitalism that our bandits do twice the work in half the time.

So many women are trafficked and enslaved that it has become almost cliché. In Turkey and Israel, these women are called “Natashas.” Much like Natasha in Kiev they suffer in the streets, often addicted to drugs and unable to contact their families and homes. Their real names are no longer important to their new exploiters. However, it could be much worse.

Peter Listermann refers to them as “chickens” or “tyolki,” which means heifers or virgin cattle.

Listermann is one of the many gangsters responsible for the enslavement and exploitation of an entire generation of women. Listermann is a Ukrainian-born, Odessa-based gangster and sex offender who refers to himself as a “matchmaker” instead of a pimp. He scouts underage women at fashion shows and movie premiers, at first promising them modeling work before shipping them off to the highest bidder.

Far from a shadowy figure, Listermann is quite open and proud of what he does. He has done numerous interviews, maintained an active social media presence, and appears openly at entertainment and fashion events in Odessa. The predator even has his own website, which has yet to be taken down.

In fact, nothing of any real consequence has happened to Listermann at all. He is now reportedly banned from several fashion shows, but he remains both a free man and a very wealthy one.
Listermann, right

It could be that Listermann remains untouchable because his clients include some of the wealthiest and most powerful people on both sides of the old Iron Curtain. Among them are countless oligarchs and fellow gangsters, along with Bruce Willis, Robert DeNiro, an unnamed British noble, and the infamous international sex trafficker, Jefferey Epstein.  At one point, Listermann claims to have procured half of Epstein’s victims. While some of this is probably an exaggeration, it can be proven that Listermann represented several of Epstein’s known victims.

With Epstein comes his best friend, Bill Clinton. The former president and current pedophile’s name appears in Epstein’s black book and the guest book of Epstein’s Zorro ranch, he has also been photographed both on the infamous “Lolita Express” and with Epstein’s victims. He was even invited to dinner dates with new victims to give his friend more credibility.

The connection between the two is so deep that Epstein’s madam and co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell was invited to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding months after being served an indictment for sex trafficking at a Clinton Foundation event. Before the wedding, Chelsea spent a week-long vacation on Ghislaine’s yacht.

A pedophile convention in the White House

Clinton did not just steal the future from these girls, he did not just make them poor, throw them out of their homes, enslave them and force them to freeze and starve in the streets for the benefit of his friends and donors. Chances are, he also raped them on his friend’s airplane.

Of course, Peter Listermann is only one of many. This type of predator is still common all throughout the Eastern Bloc. Most of them are smart enough to avoid notice, or at least canny enough to try, but nonetheless, hundreds of thousands of Russians are trafficked each year. Continuing ties between the fashion industry, sex trafficking, and pedophilia are well established. By and large, these victims will suffer in anonymity, without the benefit of a political scandal to make the world pay attention.

Not long ago, the women of Eastern Europe were free to live their lives to their full potential. They broke boundaries in science, started new trends in art, and even explored the stars as cosmonauts. In the so-called repressive dictatorship of the USSR, women held up half the sky. Now, their daughters and granddaughters travel it in the Lolita Express.

Schlüsselfiguren: Victoria Nuland, Anthony Blinken, Jake Sullivan
