Bloc’s members can’t compete with cheap grain imports from Ukraine, the paper writes
An influx of cheap Ukrainian grain and poultry is making it difficult for farmers in the European Union to break even, according to a report published by the Wall Street Journal on Friday.
Meanwhile, the grain-starved countries that were supposed to benefit from a UN-brokered arrangement to ensure safe passage of cereals and sunflower oil out of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports are not getting the food they desperately need.
“I am all for helping Ukraine, but I believe the EU opened Pandora’s box,” Jan Bieniasz, managing director of a farmers cooperative in the Polish village of Laka, told the outlet. He was referring to the European Commission’s decision to remove tariffs and quotas to allow Kiev to export its grains over land and from European ports amid the conflict with Russia.
The move has seen European Union countries flooded with cheaper agricultural goods – while EU wheat and corn generally retail for $324 and $307 a ton, respectively, Ukraine’s wheat and corn sell for around $272 and $251, the WSJ writes.
Chairman of Bulgaria’s National Grain Producer Association Iliya Prodanov, in his comment to the daily, described a similar situation in his country, pointing out that Ukrainian farmers did not have to adhere to the same environmental regulations as their EU counterparts. On Wednesday, farmers in several Bulgarian cities protested against Ukrainian agricultural imports.
French poultry farmers have made similar complaints, noting that chicken imports from Ukraine have more than doubled in the first half of 2022 and urging the EU not to renew the tariff-cancellation agreement. Apart from pricing out local farmers’ wares, Ukrainian cargoes are also taking up needed space at the ports, Cristian Gavrila of Romanian trade organization PRO AGRO told the WSJ.
The report claims that Kiev has blamed Poland for slowing down the flow of exports at the border, accusing officials of deliberately sitting on shipments and dragging their feet with sanitary checks, and has volunteered to send Ukrainian officials to help speed things along. Polish officials have insisted that they are moving as quickly as they can, according to the WSJ.
The pace of grain exports from Ukraine jumped 66% last month as the UN oversaw a deal to ensure safe passage out of the Black Sea, the American daily noted.
The US is preparing another major escalation of military aid to Ukraine as Reuters reportsthe next arms package will include rockets that have a range of 94 miles, almost double the range of the munitions Ukraine was provided for the HIMARS rocket systems.

Meanwhile, in real life, nearly every possible scenario gamed in Washington and Brussels finishes with NATO like a giant, armoured version of Wile E. Coyote plunging to the depths of the Grand Canyon. And that happens even if the much ballyhooded “Big Arrow” Russian offensive starts in a few days or weeks, or never starts at all.
Arguably the Russian General Staff has concluded a long time ago there’s no point in reducing Ukraine to rubble in a matter of hours – something they could easily accomplish. Thus the fabled mincing machine approach – offering no excuses for NATO to “escalate” (which they continue to do anyway, as Jens “War is Peace” Stoltenberg is so fond of parroting).
The trick is that NATO’s escalation overdrive, as it happens, is somewhat controlled by the Russian General Staff, which is always calculating which optimal maneuvers will consume NATO’s military hardware faster. Call it a Russian version of the popular axiom “frog in a boiling pot doesn’t realize it’s being cooked until it croaks.”
Attacking Russia-China-Iran
Absolute desperation is now graphically extrapolating into attacks on Iran. Both Russia and China have Iran as their key ally in West Asia for the whole, complex process of Eurasia integration; strategic partnerships interlink the trio.
So attacking the Ministry of Defense in Isfahan with drones – total fail – and bombing an IRGC convoy of humanitarian aid crossing from Iraq to Syria is a serious U.S.-Israel-coordinated provocation.
Essentially these are also attacks against Russia and China. Israel cannot lift its hand or foot without U.S. permission. Iranian intel may be able to establish how the Straussian neo-con and neoliberal-con cabal in charge of U.S. foreign policy authorized if not ordered these attacks, which of course are directly connected to NATO’s desperation in Ukraine.
When in doubt, just come back to Zbig “Grand Chessboard” Brzezinski: “Potentially, the most dangerous scenario would be a grand coalition of China, Russia and perhaps, Iran, an ‘anti-hegemonic’ coalition united not by ideology but by contemporary grievances. It would be reminiscent in scale and scope of the challenge once posed by the Sino-Soviet bloc.”
And mirroring Ukraine/Russia there’s of course Taiwan/China.
As Credit Suisse strategist Zoltan Pozsar has extensively explained, if Taiwan manufactures chips for U.S. missiles Washington then sends to Taiwan for its “self-defense”, but Taiwan needs to wait because the missiles are needed in Ukraine instead, or chips can’t be shipped to the U.S. owing to a possible sea and air blockade imposed by China, the Americans will be operationally ill-equipped to support their two-front war against peer competitors Russia and China.
Bye bye Pax Americana. It’s the fear, actually paranoia, of a destroyed Taiwan – and the destruction in every scenario would be provoked by the Americans themselves – that has led the Straussian neo-con and neoliberal-con cabal to demand their chips be Made in USA.

Das WEF produziert seit Jahrzehnten Begriffswolken, die Anlass für massives Stirnrunzeln geben, wird aber gerne im Mainstream als unverbindliche Spassveranstaltung und eitler Elitenkarneval dargestellt. Die Medien spielen ihr eigenes Bullshit-Bingo der Verdrängungs- und Themenvermeidungsfloskeln. Das ändert sich neuerdings massiv dank vieler freier Medien, die kritisch über das WEF berichtigen. Der Elitenzirkus von Klaus Schwab ist in der Defensive und kämpft mit einem massiven Imageproblem.
Dieses kommt nicht von ungefähr und ist weitgehend hausgemacht, durch eine Mischung aus Intransparenz und grotesken Ideen. Ein Vordenker des WEF ist der israelische Historiker und Bestsellerautor Yuval Noah Harari. Er beschäftigt sich mit der in seinen Augen wichtigsten Frage des 21. Jahrhunderts: Was soll bloß mit all den „nutzlosen“ Menschen auf der Welt geschehen?
Das Thema Überbevölkerung ist seit Beginn in die DNA des WEF und anderer Elitezirkel eingewoben. Das Menschenbild des WEF ist dabei nicht weit von den Vorstellungen entfernt, die ein Hirte von seiner Tierherde hat. Der Mensch der Zukunft rangiert irgendwo zwischen einem digitalen Nutztier und Trainer seiner KI, die ihn kontrolliert und überwacht. Harari sieht als Beschäftigung für unnütze Esser und menschliche Co-2-Schleudern vor allem eines: Drogenkonsum und Videospiele. Das Kalkül des WEF scheint zu sein: Wenn man nur genug selbst ernannte Eliten zusammenbringt, die derartige Ideen weniger grotesk aussehen lassen, lässt sich selbst frankensteinsche Science-Fiction als Wohltätigkeit für die Welt umlackieren.
Das World Economic Forum ist schon dem Namen nach eine Mogelpackung. Es ist kein Forum. Auf einem Forum wird gestritten und diskutiert, statt den inzestuös vor sich hinwabernden Begriffsbrei noch ein weiteres Mal umzurühren. Im Kern ist das WEF die weltgrößte Messe des Lobbyismus. Das Geschäftsmodell lautet „networking as a service“ und Klaus Schwab, ein in Kissingers CIA-finanziertem Harvard-Seminar geformter Ökonom und Sozialingenieur, ist der Impresario. Das WEF verkauft seinen Mitgliedern schlicht den Zugang zu Politikern. Der engste Kreis der Unternehmen, welche die Initiativen des WEF mitgestalten, zahlt dafür zwischen einer Viertelmillion und einer halben Million Dollar. Das ist viel Geld für eine angeblich reine „Spassveranstaltung“, vor allem, wenn man dafür einer Rede von Olaf Scholz lauschen muss.
Wo bleibt die öffentliche Auseinandersetzung?
Da sich derartiger Zugang zur Politik jedoch zu lohnen scheint, stellt sich unweigerlich die Demokratie-Gretchenfrage: Wem fühlen sich die Politiker letztlich verpflichtet? Dem Wähler oder den Meistbietenden?

The annual World Economic Forum (WEF) gathering has always been a testing ground for some bizarre ideas, which nonetheless serve a purpose: to introduce, and if possible normalize all kinds of mass surveillance and sometimes extremely privacy-invasive technologies.
And monitoring people’s brain activity, including via implants – surely, it doesn’t get much more invasive than that.

Yet this was one of the technologies presented at an event in Davos this year by Duke University Professor Nita Farahany.
Brain implants are not new in and of themselves, as are used in medicine to treat some serious conditions. However, the kind brought up here at one point are the ones to be put into healthy people – basically to read their minds.
“Decoding complex thought,” is already possible, Farahany said during her “Ready for Brain Transparency?” talk at the WEF summit last week. And the tech now is also able to reveal the degree of stress somebody is experiencing, as well as what they are paying attention to.
So, the goal is to know what/how a person is feeling, what they are thinking, and what draws their interest
According to the professor, all the ingredients are here – all that’s needed is massive uptake, and eventually a shift from today’s devices that accomplish it – wearables – towards “implanted (brain) technology.”
Naturally, it’s all to make things more “convenient.” How about “swiping with your mind” instead of using your fingers – because that’s one of the “conveniences” mentioned at the WEF event as a tradeoff for granting full access to your person to outside actors.
The nightmarish scenario – of healthy people subjecting themselves to this – is something many of us will see within our lifetimes, the professor also predicted from the WEF stage. But why would anyone do it?
The presentation was preceded by an animated video, the goal of which was, ostensibly, to provide that answer in an easy-to-digest format.
The video is introduced as a glimpse into what a presenter literally referred to as “a wonderful future” where brainwaves will be used for wonderful things: fighting crime, being more productive, and even “finding love.”
What’s not to like about this, right? Especially if you are an employer wanting to access every aspect of your employees’ personality and even humanity, or a government with the same intent toward its citizens.
The potential for abuse is enormous.
So if you happen to be on the opposing side of the drive toward this “wonderful future,” the concept might seem disturbing. Also disturbing was Farahany revealing during her presentation that some form of brain activity tracking is already very much so happening in the workplace.
To be precise, according to the professor: more than 5,000 companies around the world are at this point monitoring their employees’ brains for “fatigue levels.”
Needless to say, this is happening in China, among other places. And obviously, many others share the same “values” when it comes to this type of surveillance.
“Fitbits for the brain.”
Farahany explained that right now, these are consumer-side wearables with the ability to detect and interpret wave activity, what she described as “Fitbits for the brain.”
These devices are found in hats (some truckers apparently already wear them so that their bosses know how alert they are), headbands, earbuds, headphones, and the technology that powers them and relies on sensors isolating and identifying brain waves can even be embedded in small tattoos behind people’s ears.
Currently, this is what can be accessed, as per Farahany’s talk: emotional states, faces one sees in one’s mind, simple shapes and numbers – including somebody’s PIN number, meaning access to that person’s bank account.
And these devices can serve multiple purposes; earbuds that you use to, for example, access your phone or computer speakers can also be equipped with EEG sensors picking up brain waves.
But what the near future holds, according to Farahany, is this technology becoming so pervasive that it will become “the primary way” in which to interact with all other technology.
Probably reassuring nobody, she mentioned that companies like the corporate juggernaut Meta (Facebook) are involved in making this push – specifically, “making these devices universally applicable” – succeed.

Among the benefits enjoyed by employers is the possibility not only of knowing what a worker’s mind is paying attention to but also, “intervening to get their mind back on track.”
Just like prodding cattle, then.
“I think in one year we will be largely where we are now but with much better form factor technology,” Farahany said.
