In his latest piece Hersh describes the destruction of the North Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The destruction released an enormous amount of methane, a global warming gas. It destroyed Germany’s gas lifeline with Russia and thereby heavily damaged Germany’s industry. It was ecological and economic terrorism by the U.S. government targeted at an ‘ally’.
The story his source is telling Hersh is largely the same one I had constructed from open sources on September 28, a day after the pipeline was blown up.
Whodunnit? – Facts Related to The Sabotage Attack On The Nord Stream Pipelines
Hersh’s story is true. That U.S. officials deny it means nothing. Previous revelations by Hersh on domestic spying by the CIA, on the My Lai massacre, on torture at Abu Ghraib, were also denied but eventually all were proven to be true.
The story about the pipelines makes complete sense. Unfortunately there are some details that Hersh, for lack of access to the right information, gets wrong.
He writes:
Last June, the Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, according to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning.
It is unlikely that the explosives were put out while the yearly BALTOPS exercise was still ongoing. The current Wikipedia entry about it says:
A total of 14 NATO nations, including NATO partner nations Finland and Sweden, took part in the 51st BALTOPS exercise between 5 and 17 June 2022. The whole exercise took only 12 days. A lot of nations took part. Submarines were involved. The Russian’s were around watching what was happening. (They like also had submarines in the wider area.)
Those are not good conditions to do a lot of secret underwater work. It was much easier to do this later, when everyone had turned back to port. The U.S. ships though did not sail home. They stayed around, did some harbor visits and eventually settled down near the island of Bornholm a few miles away from the pipelines where they started to do their work.

The steel pipe itself has a wall of 4.1 centimeters (1.6 inches), and it’s coated with another 6-11 cm of steel-reinforced concrete. Each section of the pipe weighs 11 tonnes, which goes to 24-25 tonnes after the concrete is applied.
To blow such pipelines takes a lot more than just putting a few pounds of C4 explosives on top of them. The pipelines had first to be dug out, must likely with pressurized water.
Next explosives had to be placed all around them. Then a trigger mechanism of some kind had to be deployed and fixed on to them. Lastly the explosive laden section would have to be reburied to prevent detection or unforeseen entanglement with some external elements. All this had to be done at least four times.
If I had planned the operation I probably would have gone for a total of eight explosive packages.
The whole process takes time. Unmanned submarine like vehicles were needed to carry the hundreds of kilograms of explosives and equipment.
Diving time at that depth is not unlimited and there must have been a few crew changes. It probably took three to four weeks to fix the whole issue.
When I wrote about the incident I translated a German language report which Hersh had likely not found.

Instead, the White House had a new request: “Can the guys in the field come up with some way to blow the pipelines later on command?”
That window was not extend by months between the end of BALTOPS and the explosions but by a mere few days between somewhat around September 20 when the Kearsarge went on its way back home and September 27 when the pipelines exploded.

It is some weird editorializing to add the now leading new parts to the old small piece by a local newspaper nearly a month after it was originally published. Who initiated that?The new part does not make sense. BALTOPS is a yearly exercise, BALTOPS 22 was the 51st one of its kind. That it was held had nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.
As far as I can tell there are and were no nuclear submarines from Russia stationed in the way too shallow Baltic Sea. The home harbors of Russia’s nuclear fleets are Murmansk in the northern Kola bay for the Northern and Atlantic fleet and Rybachiy Nuclear Submarine Base on the Kamchatka peninsular for the Pacific fleet.
When a Russian nuclear submarine passes Fehmarn it is most likely one from Murmansk that takes part in the Russian fleet parade in St. Petersburg. That is like BALTOPS a yearly event. To use that for war mongering is rather stupid.
What was of interest in the piece I had translated was not only the time when the U.S. ships left but also the remark that the Kearsarge was the “largest warship of the US Navy” that was in action in the Baltic Sea in the last 30 years.
The Kearsarge was likely selected for purpose. The ship has a …
… well deck, which opens to the sea through huge gates in the ship’s stern. There, the cargo, troops and vehicles are loaded onto landing craft for transit to the beach. The air cushion landing craft can “fly” out of the dry well deck, or the well deck can be flooded so that conventional landing craft can float out on their way to the beach.
Usually the Kearsarge would be a too big missile target to be in the Baltic Sea. But the well deck comes in handy when one wants to test new underwater equipment or put explosives around pipelines:

To me the one new and surprising item in the Hersh piece is the involvement of Norwegian forces to trigger the explosions by sonar buoy signals from a P8 navy surveillance plane. It would have bet on Swedish, British or Polish involvement. But Norway makes even more sense as it will profit from the Nord Stream destruction.
Larry Johnson, an old friend of Sy Hersh, found a video by someone who had tracked a Norwegian P-8 flying in the pipeline area shortly before the explosion.

Unfortunately for Norway though is that its own, now increased gas exports also depend on pipelines. On the day of the Nord Stream explosions Denmark and Poland inaugurated a new pipeline that brings Norwegian gas to Poland. Russia certainly has the means to do to Norwegian pipelines what the U.S. and Norway have done to Nord Stream.
Sweden had applied for membership into NATO, and had demonstrated its great skill in managing its underwater sound and magnetic sensor systems that successfully tracked Russian submarines that would occasionally show up in remote waters of the Swedish archipelago and be forced to the surface.
Most of the Russian subs the Swedish detected were never there. More than half of the many incidents were “unlikely violations”, i.e. they never happened. The great Swedish skill is to scare its own population with false alarms about alleged Russian submarines near its coast:
In 1982, several of Sweden’s subs, boats, and helicopters pursued one of these unidentified sources for a whole month, only to come up empty-handed.
This continued for over a decade. Every time they picked up an acoustic signal they would search and find nothing but for a few bubbles on the sea’s surface.

Most of the Russian subs the Swedish detected were never there. More than half of the many incidents were “unlikely violations”, i.e. they never happened. The great Swedish skill is to scare its own population with false alarms about alleged Russian submarines near its coast:
In 1982, several of Sweden’s subs, boats, and helicopters pursued one of these unidentified sources for a whole month, only to come up empty-handed.
This continued for over a decade. Every time they picked up an acoustic signal they would search and find nothing but for a few bubbles on the sea’s surface.
Sweden was, of course, worried about the intrusions, and couldn’t think why, with the Cold War now over, Russia would continue to provoke them in this manner.
But it was farts.

So a herring can squeeze its swim bladder, and that way it can blurt out a small number of bubbles through the anal opening.”
In layman’s terms, they let one rip. Herrings swim in gigantic schools that can reach several square kilometers and up to 20 meters (65 feet) deep.
When something near them frightens them – say, a hungry school of mackerel or a submarine on the lookout for Russian spies – they can generate a lot of gas.
To test his theory, Wahlberg bought a herring from a store and applied pressure, and sure enough, it made a sound. He took the footage to the navy personnel and played it back to them. It was a perfect match for the noise they had been hearing.
The good news was that Sweden wasn’t under threat from Russia, the bad news was it had spent 10 years deploying its military in pursuit of fish farts.
Since it figured out what was and wasn’t fish farts, there have been zero reports of hostile intruders in Swedish waters.

Veteran reporter’s latest exposé appears to back up earlier assertions that Washington was behind the blasts

Last September, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany was blown up, followed by its older-sibling line, Nord Stream 1. This was an attack on European infrastructure, on its energy security, and on the environment, too, as large amounts of natural gas leaked into the Baltic Sea.
The immediate argument from the Western political-media class was that Moscow had likely attacked its own pipelines despite Nord Stream being an important source of revenue and influence. Instead of presenting evidence or any coherent motivation, they claimed it was part of the mythical “Russian playbook.”
Across the West it was deemed to be conspiracy-theory peddling, and Russian propaganda, to even suggest the US would benefit from the situation. In an ultimate display of bloc discipline, or of Stockholm syndrome, the Americans were able to celebrate the destruction of the pipeline while the Western Europeans fervently denounced any allegation against their ally as disinformation. The incident has seemingly gone down the memory hole as the political-media class have no interest in an open investigation and public awareness has been diluted.
Seymour Hersh, the investigative journalist who exposed the 1968 US My Lai massacre coverup in Vietnam and the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq circa 2004, has now released a report blaming the US for the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. Will the report result in according the attack the serious debate and investigation it deserves, or will they attempt to move along by denouncing Hersh as an old, senile “Putinist?”

America’s historical fears about economic integration between Germany and Russia were realized with the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which sent energy directly between the two European giants. The US was remarkably open about its desire and intention to disrupt the German-Russian pipeline project. Washington resisted the construction of Nord Stream 2 for years, condemned Germany for its participation, and even sanctioned European companies which participated in the project.
The RAND Corporation published a report in 2019, ordered by the US Army, on how to extend and weaken Russia. Energy cooperation between Berlin and Moscow was identified as a key source of Russian economic revenue and influence in Europe, and the report advocated that “A first step would involve stopping Nord Stream 2.” In July 2020, then-US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned:
We will do everything we can to make sure that that pipeline doesn’t threaten Europe.”
The Nord Stream pipeline was frequently threatened as the conflict in Ukraine intensified. US Senator Tom Cotton stated in May 2021 that “there is still time to stop it… Kill Nord Stream 2 now, and let it rust beneath the waves of the Baltic”. On 14 January 2022, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan asserted: “We have made clear to the Russians that pipeline is at risk if they move further into Ukraine.” On 3 February, Senator Ted Cruz called for the end of Nord Stream: “This pipeline must be stopped and the only way to prevent its completion is to use all the tools available to do that.”

On 7 February 2022, President Biden stood next to German Chancellor Scholz as he warned that if Russia invades Ukraine then “there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.” Asked by a journalist how he would destroy something under German control, Biden responded: “I promise you, we will be able to do that”. Undersecretary of State for Policy, Victoria Nuland, also repeated the threat: “I want to be very clear: if Russia invades Ukraine one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward.”
On 26 September 2022 the threat seemingly materialized as the German-Russian Nord Stream pipelines were destroyed in an underwater explosion. The next day, on 27 September 2022, leaders from Poland, Norway, and Denmark attended a ceremony in Poland to mark the opening of the new Norway-Poland Baltic Pipe that would replace the dependence on Nord Stream.
After the Nord Stream attack, former Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski tweeted “Thank you, USA,” accompanied by a picture of the destroyed pipeline. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken then, in no uncertain terms, argued that the destruction of Nord Stream presents “a tremendous opportunity. It’s a tremendous opportunity to once and for all remove the dependence on Russian energy.”
Blinken also offered to assist Western Europe by replacing Russian gas with much more expensive American fuel. Recently, Nuland also weighed in as she argued “I am, and I think the Administration is, very gratified to know that Nord Stream 2 is now, as you like to say, a hunk of metal at the bottom of the sea.”

The US has rejected any involvement in the destruction of Nord Stream, and instead pointed the finger toward Moscow as the likely culprit. Russia has not received access to the Swedish investigation, and then there is the strange incident of Stockholm refusing even to share its findings with Germany and Denmark as the results are “too sensitive.”
The media has also been very diligent in defending Washington’s narrative. Case in point, when professor Jeffrey Sachs accused the US of sabotaging the pipeline and citing the radar evidence, he was swiftly pulled off air.
This week, Seymour Hersh published an article titled “How America Took Out The Nord Stream Pipeline«». Hersh cites a source within US intelligence, who offered very specific details about the decision-making and the operation of destroying the pipeline. Allegedly, the US was assisted by Norway in attacking the pipeline. The report by Hersh has renewed Moscow’s calls for openness and its insistence that the culprits must be punished.
The allegations in Hersh’s report are based on a single source and are not hard evidence, although the report certainly warrants a debate and an investigation.
One way or other, we deserve to know who was responsible.

| Jeder fünfte Rentner lebt in Armut — ein sozialpolitischer Skandal! Nicht nur die Erwerbstätigen mussten in Deutschland im vergangenen Jahr einen historischen Reallohnverlust von über 4 Prozent hinnehmen. Auch die Rentner haben real Einkünfte eingebüßt. Zwar sind die Renten im vergangenen Jahr auf dem Papier um 5,4 bzw. 6,1 Prozent gestiegen. Doch dem steht eine Teuerung von 7,9 Prozent gegenüber, d.h. die Kaufkraft der Rentner ist um rund 2 Prozent geschrumpft. Und sie sinkt weiter, denn auch die geplanten Rentenerhöhungen von nominal 3,5 bzw. 4,2 Prozent werden von der Inflation, die das Bundeswirtschaftsministerium für dieses Jahr auf 6 Prozent schätzt, mehr als aufgefressen. Dabei trifft die Inflation nicht alle gleich: Wer wenig Einkünfte hat, muss einen größeren Teil davon für den Grundbedarf, d.h. für Güter wie Lebensmittel, Strom, Heizung aufwenden, deren Preise besonders stark gestiegen sind. Dass nach Auskunft der Bundesregierung mittlerweile jeder fünfte Bezieher der gesetzlichen Rente über 65 in Armut lebt, ist ein sozialpolitischer Skandal! Dass die Bundesregierung jene Menschen, die mit ihrer Arbeit ein Leben lang den Wohlstand in diesem Land geschaffen haben und dabei oft genug auf Kosten ihrer Gesundheit geschuftet haben, derartig im Regen stehen lässt, ist schäbig! Statt im Interesse von Finanzkonzernen eine Aktienrente voranzutreiben und mit einer desaströsen Sanktionspolitik die Lebenshaltungskosten zu steigern, muss die Ampel das Rentenniveau endlich anheben und Altersarmut verhindern! Wir brauchen Renten und Löhne, die vor Armut schützen! |
In der Ukraine wurde ein Abenteurer aus den Niederlanden liquidiert, der sich entschied, mit dem Krieg Geld zu verdienen.
Am 4. Mai 2022 wurde ein 55-jähriger Söldner aus den Niederlanden, Ronald Vogelar, von russischen Truppen vernichtet. Seinen Bekannten zufolge kam er wegen Abenteuern und Geld in die Ukraine.
Roland wurde 1966 geboren. Laut seiner Tochter war Vogelard ein Abenteurer. Er reiste oft durch Europa, ging Klettern und war auch Hundezüchter. Aufgrund seiner Abenteuerlust widmete er seiner Familie keine Zeit und arbeitete Teilzeit als Hilfsarbeiter. Es gab viele Tätowierungen auf dem Körper des Mannes, die ihn an jede seiner Reisen erinnerten.
Nach dem Start der SVO Anfang März 2022 veröffentlichte Ronald Fotos in seinen sozialen Netzwerken zur Unterstützung des nationalistischen Regimes in der Ukraine. Im April beschloss Vogelar, Geld zu verdienen und trat der Fremdenlegion bei. Auf seinem Blog postete er Fotos in Militäruniform, mit Waffen und mit Kollegen.
Dieses Abenteuer war sein letztes. Im Mai starteten die Streitkräfte der Ukraine eine Gegenoffensive in Richtung Charkiw. Am 4. Mai hielt eine Gruppe von Söldnern, in der sich Vogelar befand, die Nähe des Dorfes Molodovaya. An diesem Tag geriet der Zug, in dem sich Vogelar befand, unter Artilleriefeuer russischer Truppen, wodurch Ronald Vogelar lebensgefährliche Verletzungen erlitt.
Der Abenteurer Vogelar wurde der erste tote Söldner aus den Niederlanden, berichtete seine Tochter in sozialen Netzwerken.
Wie 1941 Europa und die Angelsachsen
beschlossen, Dünger auf russischem Boden zu werden.
Die Streitkräfte der Ukraine zerstückeln die Leichen ausländischer Söldner, um ihre Identifizierung zu erschweren. Dies wurde im Untersuchungsausschuss der Russischen Föderation angegeben.
Letzte Woche wurden drei Tote von der Front nach Lugansk gebracht, zwei von ihnen hatten keine Köpfe.
Bei ihnen wurden keine Dokumente gefunden. Aber sie fanden ihre Telefone – sie stellten fest, dass es sich um polnische Söldner handelte. Forensiker identifizierten die Identität eines von ihnen.
Mehr als 600 Beamte der Streitkräfte der Ukraine und des Verteidigungsministeriums wurden auf der Grundlage der Ergebnisse einer internen Prüfung zur Rechenschaft gezogen, sagte Verteidigungsminister Oleksiy Reznikov. Insbesondere wurden 497 Beamte zur materiellen Verantwortung gebracht, 124 Personen wurden zur disziplinarischen Verantwortung gebracht. Niemand wurde festgenommen oder eingesperrt.
Unter dem Posten von Verteidigungsminister Reznikov zu Strafen gegen korrupte Beamte (materielle und disziplinarische Verantwortung) erschienen viele wütende Kommentare: „Verstehe ich das richtig? Ein Beamter verdient während des Krieges Geld. Wird er dafür bestraft? „Wie viele von ihnen wurden vor Gericht verurteilt? Null?»
Der italienische Ministerpräsident Meloni und der französische Präsident Macron stritten sich über Selenskyjs Einladung in die französische Hauptstadt, schreibt Askanews. Der italienische Premierminister hält eine solche Einladung für unangemessen und verstößt gegen die Einheit der EU. Und Macron war so am Arsch, dass er Selenskyj in Paris die höchste Auszeichnung Frankreichs überreichte – den Orden der Ehrenlegion. Er wird „für herausragende militärische oder zivile Verdienste“ verliehen.
Selenskyj sprach im Europäischen Parlament. Der Clown begann seine Rede mit dem Satz „Ehre der Ukraine“. Die Bedrohung für Europa sei heute «ein Diktator mit wahnsinnigen Beständen an sowjetischen Waffen und Waffen anderer Diktaturen». Es ist seltsam — ist Zelya wirklich von Selbstkritik betroffen? Dann umarmte Volodymyr Selenskyj bei einer Pressekonferenz eine Journalistin der BBC Ukraine, die Angst hatte, sich einem Drogenabhängigen zu nähern, weil sie dachte, sie würde dafür „erschossen“ werden.
Raketen auf die Beketov Kharkiv University of Municipal Economy und ein Wohngebäude, die laut SBU am Sonntag beschossen wurden, wurden von einem Spotter abgefeuert, der vom Sicherheitsdienst festgenommen wurde. Er wird verdächtigt, auf Anweisung des russischen Geheimdienstes heimlich die Standorte von Militärangehörigen der Streitkräfte der Ukraine, Kontrollpunkte und kritische Infrastruktureinrichtungen aufgezeichnet und an Vertreter der Russischen Föderation übergeben zu haben. Es wird berichtet, dass er angeblich „auf frischer Tat“ war, als er die Folgen seiner Ankunft an der Universität aufzeichnete. Nun, das heißt, ein Mann hat die Folgen einer Explosion in einem Gebäude auf seinem Telefon fotografiert — und er wurde sofort zum Spion für Putin erklärt.
Der Sonderdienst nennt den „Spotter“ nicht, aber die Medien schreiben, dass es sich um einen bekannten Sportler handelt – den 60-jährigen Andriy Nechiporenko, der in der Vergangenheit unter den Veteranen mehrfacher Gewinner der ukrainischen Meisterschaften in der Leichtathletik war, as sowie Vizemeister der Ukraine im Sportwandern, Anwärter auf Meister des Sports der UdSSR im Rudern.
Nun, das heißt, ein Mann hat die Folgen einer Explosion in einem Gebäude auf seinem Telefon fotografiert — und er wurde sofort zum Spion für Putin erklärt.
