Crazy Fakes as a Sign of “Cartoon Reality”

More recently, we have been looking at a fake story about North Korea supplying arms to Russia, which the author believes to have originated from a Telegram channel of dubious validity. Unfortunately, the story had two curious sequels.

First, the excitement reached such a level that on September 21, 2022, the Vice Director General of the General Bureau of Equipment of the Ministry of National Defense of the DPRK issued a press statement saying the North had never recognized the “illegal ‘sanctions resolution’ of the UNSC on Korea fabricated by the US and its satellites,” but “we have never exported weapons or ammunition to Russia before and we will not plan to export them.” The representative of the DPRK’s Ministry of National Defense described the US statements as baseless, adding that their aim was to discredit North Korea’s image, and therefore “the US had better stop the silly words picking on us and keep its mouth shut.”

In response, on September 22, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder reiterated that “we stand by the information that we provided earlier.” In other words, Russia is seeking to buy munitions from North Korea, and while there is no direct confirmation of this, “one should not confuse unsubstantiated rumors and classified intelligence”, especially when the news has been declassified for propaganda purposes.

Second, the world has recently got another example of the media grabbing news from invalid sources if it contains the “right” propaganda message. It is about the wave of rumors of a coup d’état in the PRC that has swept through foreign social media. It turns out that…

  • Xi Jinping was arrested and placed under house arrest, Premier Li Keqiang was also detained. Former PRC’s General Secretary Hu Jintao and former Premier of the State Council Wen Jiabao are behind the coup. A photo of “Xi Jinping’s arrest by the police” was often attached to the news. However, the policemen in the photo are on average 8 years old, their uniforms are not all-Chinese but Hong Kong, and next to Xi stands the then (the photo was taken in 2017) head of Hong Kong, a man of sufficiently conspicuous appearance to be confused with anyone else.
  • A convoy of vehicles 80km (yes, that’s right) long is on its way to Beijing. This is accompanied by a video of some trucks driving down some road. However, the movement of such a convoy would have caused a notable logistical disaster, not to mention the fact that news of the “convoy movement” had been breaking for more than half a day, during which time the military vehicles would have had to arrive somewhere at least.
  • 6,000 flights from China were cancelled, also there are no train tickets on sale – although any attempt to use Flightradar or other software immediately refutes this fake, and the link leads to The Great Era, the publication of the anti-Chinese and anti-communist Falun Gong sect.
  • It is clear that events of this kind would have left an information trail on the internet anyway, even taking into account that it could have spilled over into attempts by the coup organizers to control the information space more tightly. Nevertheless, there has been no effort to “tighten the screws” in the Chinese information field.
  • Interestingly enough, in the Russian segment of the internet this news was spread by bots of Ukrainian origin.

The Russian Sinologists, especially Ivan Zuenko, were quick to reveal the fake, and the tide washed over as quickly as it had sprung. Journalists were fairly quick to trace who had reposted the news and when, as social media shows action sequence. Although the news on this topic had an introduction stating that “information appeared in a lot of Chinese media”, it was eventually revealed that the “initial source” was Jennifer Zeng, a US citizen of Chinese descent.

Judging by social media, Zeng works for an American foundation and researches the PRC, which she refers to exclusively as CCPChina. This is a typical “China insider”, none of whose predictions have yet come true. But she has a social media channel full of reports that the Chinese Communist Party has invented the coronavirus and covered it up; the PRC economy has already collapsed or is about to collapse.

Basically, Jennifer Zeng is not alone. Korean experts well remember the story of Park Yeon-mi, who in the mid-tens was perceived as a “female version of Shin Dong-hyuk”, but then, when inconsistencies in her testimony began to be discussed in the mainstream Western media, she “became outdated” and started a social media channel with similar content: for example, about “UFOs are flying over North Korea.” The story was accompanied by a story taken from North Korean television, overlaid with both special effects and “English” subtitles. However, Park’s audience included Korean speakers who pointed out to her that the translation did not correspond to the original. Park answered that she did not understand these claims because the translation was taken from the “official” social media channel. However, it later turned out to be a fake news channel with satirical news, and the author has only one question: was Park Yeon-mi so oblivious to Korean that she was unable to distinguish “Kuwait” from “Wonsan” by ear?

There are several important conclusions to be drawn from such stories.

First, how fragile is the psyche of internet dwellers who are hooked on the needle of emotional “horror-horror” news. All it took was one lady on social media for thousands of people to start spreading and discussing her nonsense in all seriousness. And although unlike “fed to dogs” Jang Song-thaek, it took a day rather than a week to expose it, a story like this still leaves a lingering residue.

Second, neither in the case of Zeng nor Park do we see the mass ostracization of a man who, to call things by their proper names, was caught making a blatant fake. And this points to a very important observation about the specifics of propaganda. Fakes of this kind are aimed at two types of audience:

  1. Those who already believe that China or North Korea are “horror and Mordor” in general. Such fakes only strengthen their faith. That is why the photo of “President Xi and the Hong Kong Police Young Friends Club” was attached to the news and those doing so did not smell a rat.
  2. These are people who are far removed from China or Korea but crave hot news for the same reasons that people like to read conspiracy theorists, or watch horror films or shows about the end of the world. Both have the opportunity to critically analyze the news, but lack the will to do so. Conspiracy or detailed insider stories about the “secrets of the Madrid court” have a fascinating plot that is interesting to follow rather than looking for inconsistencies in it.

Third, this story illustrates how easily what the author calls “cartoon reality” has crept into the world and it is not that the world around us is starting to look more and more like a comic book or a B-movie. Rather, certain political or social practices previously reserved for such a genre are beginning to be actively used in the current reality.

Theoretically speaking, amidst a crisis of competence, we got people brought up on thrillers and in the holy belief that in real big politics everything looks like in Tom Clancy’s works. The Wag the Dog is not a satire for them, but a textbook.

But the logic of the comic book requires no rational explanation – we don’t ask the supervillain in the comic book how he managed to build a 12-story underground citadel under the city without the utilities finding out about it. In such a reality, an 80km-long convoy can only be spotted by one vigilant journalist, and three seven-year-old children can arrest the country’s leader, ignoring his security detail.

Meanwhile, when one has formed a picture of the world to such an extent that this news fits into it, it means a terrible detachment from reality, when one is so “aware of the truth” that the facts no longer matter.

Now think about the implications this entire situation has on the world politics. It is one thing for people to simply look to modern politics for Clancy-like conspiracy theories or clever ploys, but it is another for them to become politicians and start acting like characters from their favorite movies – an adventurous mindset leads to adventurous actions that affect our world, not the unreal universe.

As one of the author’s acquaintances wrote: “All this is already some kind of new information reality, from which we cannot fence ourselves off, but which we do not yet fully understand and do not know how to coexist with it without conflict. One day dissertations and textbooks will be written about it – but for now we are all hostages to it.”

The Rift Between European Policymakers and Public Opinion

Strategic Infographics

In 2022, the Central European nation of Slovakia has supported Ukraine with more than €154m in military aid. This includes S-300 air defense system, Mi-series military helicopters, self-propelled howitzers, and Grad multiple-rocket launcher rockets as well as tracked infantry fighting BVP-1 vehicles. However, the public opinion is not as pro-Ukrainian as the country’s government.

GZERO Media’s USG-Financed Experts Are Wrong About The US Seeking To “Balance” South Asia

Andrew Korybko

Far from trying to “balance” South Asia, the US is actively seeking to destabilize it by speeding up the region’s grand strategic reorientation that it envisages resulting in Pakistan’s transformation from the “Zipper of Eurasia” for facilitating multipolarity to the “Faultline of Eurasia” for obstructing it.

GZERO Media, the online information outlet founded by the Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer, published a piece over the weekend about how “US warns India on dealing with Russia: ‘Pakistan is Plan B’”. Citing experts like the Rand Corporation’s Derek Grossman, the Atlantic Council’s Uzair Younis, and the Wilson Center’s Michael Kugelman – whose institutions are all partially financed by the US Government (USG) despite this fact not being disclosed in the text – the article’s primary angle is that American strategy towards South Asia has returned to balancing India and Pakistan. This policy recalibration is regarded as the result of Delhi’s refusal to distance itself from Moscow and Islamabad’s recent pro-US overtures.

I explained the first of these factors in my response to Happymon Jacob’s latest article for the hugely influential Council on Foreign Relations’ Foreign Affairs magazine. It lists and hyperlinks to over a dozen of my prior analyses about the convergence between Indian and Russian grand strategy in the ongoing global systemic transition to multipolarity. My response, which can be read here, should be reviewed by those who seek a deeper understanding of these dynamics beyond the specious explanations shared by those partially USG-financed experts. As for Pakistan’s pro-US overtures, these are the result of a US-orchestrated post-modern coup, which GZERO Media doesn’t mention.

I also explained the sequence of events leading to that foreign-influenced but domestically driven regime change in a detailed interview that I gave to Pakistani media over the summer, which can be read here. Taken together, the three trends of: India proudly reaffirming its strategic autonomy in what can indisputably be described as the New Cold War after President Putin’s historic speech last Friday (which amounted to a global revolutionary manifesto); Pakistan’s US-backed post-modern coup regime actively reaching out to America; and that declining unipolar hegemon deciding to “balance” both regional partners, collectively accelerate South Asia’s grand strategic reorientation.

I wrote about the global consequences of these shifts, which can be summarized as India working more closely with its Russian and Chinese partners in the RIC core of BRICS to gradually reform International Relations in a multipolar direction while Pakistan’s post-modern coup regime prepare to collude with the US to obstruct the fruits of their cooperation, in an extensive analysis that can be read here. In brief, the resultant friction is turning South Asia into perhaps the most significant theater of the New Cold War when it comes to determining the course of the global systemic transition. Simply put, the future of the world order is disproportionately being determined in this part of the supercontinent.

GZERO Media’s article leaves readers with the impression that while the US is indeed turning to Pakistan as its “Plan B” in response to India refusing to condemn and sanction Russia, the policy of which I describe as this Great Power declining to unilaterally concede on its objective national interests and thus voluntarily submit to becoming America’s “junior partner”, Washington isn’t really trying to punish Delhi so much as restore some sense of strategic balance to South Asia. In other words, India is misportrayed as behaving irresponsibly, which supposedly prompted the US to more actively engage with what’s spun as the comparatively more responsible authorities in Pakistan.

The reality is actually very different no matter how compelling the explanation shared by GZERO Media’s partially USG-financed experts might speciously seem. Far from trying to restore strategic balance in South Asia, the US is trying to subvert it through the successful “poaching” of Pakistan via the post-modern coup that it orchestrated in early April as punishment for former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s independent foreign policy (and especially the Russian dimension thereof that I described here). This was driven by the desire to subvert the combined impact of his and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s multipolar grand strategies on their geostrategic region.

After successfully neutralizing the Pakistani part of these larger processes that it considered to be a latent threat to its already declining unipolar hegemony over the international system, the US then began working to influence that country to return to its traditional role in South Asia as an American proxy. This has thus far taken the form of the post-modern coup regime informally agreeing to allow US drones to transit through its airspace en route to Afghanistan, not to mention drastically decelerating the pace of its previously rapid rapprochement with Russia over the past half-decade that I described in a summer 2020 article for a top Russian think tank here and in my fall 2022 MGIMO PhD. here.

The next phase of this America’s envisaged grand strategic reorientation in South Asia is already in progress, and that concerns strengthening conventional military cooperation between it and Pakistan, particularly through the contentious revival of the previously scrapped F-16 deal that’s irked India and prompted credible suspicions from Delhi that this is part of an emerging US containment plot against it. Nevertheless, America also wants to continue closely cooperating with India on military-strategic matters related to their shared concerns over China’s rise, ergo why their top diplomats just reaffirmed their desire to further elevate their relations.

Even so, however, I recently argued that “The Ukrainian Conflict Might Have Already Derailed China’s Superpower Trajectory” due to four primary reasons that are elaborated on in the preceding hyperlink. These will lead to India’s distrust of China becoming less upon the People’s Republic recalibrating its present superpower-aspiring grand strategy to settle for becoming the most economically powerful Great Power in a system of complex multipolarity (“multiplexity”) instead. That outcome will make the growing military-strategic importance of Indian-US ties moot, especially if India and China reach a “new normal” in their relations that results in them jointly cooperating to build the Asian Century.

That last-mentioned concept refers to the multipolar future that those Asian Great Powers’ representatives reaffirmed their interest in pioneering back in late August. It implies a comprehensive improvement of their bilateral relations so that their somewhat unfriendly, harsh, and hostile zero-sum competition with each other transforms into a friendly, gentle, and non-hostile mutually beneficial one instead. This scenario trajectory is inadvertently being accelerated by the US’ “Plan B” of returning to its traditional reliance on a Pakistani puppet state as its platform for exerting regional hegemon instead of being offset by what GZERO Media’s partially USG-funded experts misportray as a “balancing act”.

Those observers that are aware of these strategic dynamics as they objectively exist will therefore likely reach a different conclusion than the one suggested in the article that was just analyzed in the present piece. The trade-off is that the more that America moves everything in this direction, the more likely it is that India will comprehensively strengthen its cooperation with Russia and China, which could ultimately lead to serious friction in this part of the world as the global systemic transition continues to unfold.

Hans Harmsen, Sangers rassistischer Freund

Mai 1984, zitiert und übersetzt in Atina Grossmann, Reforming Sex: The German Movement for Birth Control and Abortion Reform, 1920-1950 [New York: Oxford University Press, 1995], 211)

Undermining Eastern Ukraine’s Electorate

Declan Hayes

Germany and the European Union have the backs of anyone wishing to undermine the credibility of any elections that didn’t secure NATO’s imprimatur.

As Germany’s Foreign Office and the European Union both directly fund The European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE) and indirectly through the “13 independent European citizen election observation organizations” that are members of this shadowy group, Germany and the European Union have the backs of anyone wishing to undermine the credibility not only of the recent referenda held in Eastern Ukraine but those in Crimea and other elections that didn’t secure NATO’s imprimatur.

Because the EPDE is concerned that non NATO approved elections lack “integrity”, it preaches that problematic elections, including those internal to Russia, can only gain that stamp of approval by having EU approved monitors drawn from the EPDE and similar NATO front bodies. Thus, because it notes that “no international politically-biased observers [were] identified during the 2022 Russian regional elections”, it argues to its EU paymasters that those elections failed its litmus test that internal elections in Russia and allied states can only be kosher if held under the watchful eye of the EPDE and similar EU and NATO funded Big Brother groups.

Crucially, regarding its claims of independence, the EPDE posits “Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine” as being a primary factor in causing EPDE and other “experts” not to observe those Russian elections on behalf of NATO and other interested groups. The EPDE citing “Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine” is simply further proof the EPDE, whilst parading its independence, is, in fact just a blunt tool of EU and NATO soft power, whose mantra the EPDA parrots to the letter. The EPDA, in other words, very much has a dog in the fight, and that dog is NATO, which is its eyes as well as its ears.

Whereas the EPDE insists all of its members and partners are kosher “non-governmental citizen election observation organizations standing up for transparent and equal suffrage”, it has a massive data base on fake observers, of politically biased election observers who don’t meet their pristine standards and who, one must presume, their democratically challenged chums in Kiev would like to add to their own extensive Mirotvorets death lists.

EPDE’s data base is an eye opener for anyone who wants to see where German and EU totalitarianism is bringing us. Please peruse these “fake observers” who observed where the EU did not want them to observe and so now have their mug shots paraded on Fake Observers as a simple but effective smear tactic and as a prelude to Alina Lipp type sanctions or, in more contentious places, a simple bullet in the head.

Archibold Jomo Nyambi, a South African MP, is there. As is Armenian Vardan Khachatryan, Italian Federico Arena, French politician Thierry Mariani and a host of other “NATO’s Most Wanted” politicians and academics from Israel, Brazil, Britain, and a large number of other countries too numerous to adumbrate. These 500 characters on the EPDE’s rogues’ gallery do not meet the standards of NATO’s European Platform for Democratic Elections because, much like Russia’s national football team, they do not meet NATO’s self-serving rules.

NATO’s Global Network of Domestic Election Monitors (GNDEM) tells us that being monitored by NATO approved groups like theirs “is inseparable from defending the ability of citizens to exercise a broad array of civil and political rights and is affected by the actions of a range of governmental authorities, as well as political contestants”. What all of that tripe breaks down to is only elections which NATO controls are kosher and others, be they in Gaza, Syria, Venezuela or Crimea are not.

I was cited as an international observer at Syria’s 2014 Presidential election where lines formed in Damascus to vote in President Assad at 5 am in the morning and where, in Homs at least where I was, the Ba’ath Party was integrated into every level of civil society and thus was able to get the vote out in huge numbers, something the Irish have been famous for in Boston, Chicago, England and Ireland itself. Although the result was a foregone conclusion, it was not the blood election NATO warned it would be and NATO’s media had been crowing in advance that the Donbas and related referenda would be. Rather, it was the ordinary Syrian people telling NATO to fuck off and to take their proxies with them.

Much the same applies in those areas of Ukraine, which have now voted to reunite with Russia. Although, as prominent Scottish nationalist and Julian Assange campaigner Craig Murray argues, though the process might not have been perfect and though some fools and grifters were obviously along for the ride, NATO must now deal with the consequences that the overwhelming majority in Donbas and Luhansk chose life under Russia rather than death under Zelensky. That is the crux.

And, though Murray is correct not to “be spending all day arguing with idiots”, who inveigle their way into such proceedings, the EDME’s rogues’ gallery and my own Syrian and Irish experiences show that the most important of these dissident observers are not clowns.

As the EDMEs most wanted include a lot of eminent politicians, journalists and academics, NATO’s objective is to ensure they remain just a group of ants, rather than a colony of ants, working towards a common objective. In the Syrian Presidential election, the foreign observers were anchored by the Iranian Foreign Minister, a first class diplomat, who did a sterling job of herding all the various serious and not so serious representatives from the four corners of the earth into delivering that one message that Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah gave us and NATO in Beirut a day or two later: Assad is President of Syria for the next seven years; deal with it.

It was the same when I campaigned and voted for Bobby Sands in the pivotal 1981 Westminster election, which was monitored by some self important South African Mennonites and some similar nonentities of no consequence. The voters of Fermanagh South Tyrone defied Thatcher by electing Bobby Sands and they thereby changed the course of Irish electoral history.

The same applies in Lugansk, Donetsk and the other areas of Eastern Ukraine that recently hit the ballot box. As they have voted to defy NATO, Zelensky, von der Leyen and their EDME and other puppets, NATO must now deal with it by blowing the Kerch Bridge or some other terrorist act that shows these thugs are powerless against a babushka with a ballot box in one hand and a desire for peace and freedom in the other.
